Do you make friend time a priority?

Gosh, as a wife, mom, Executive Director… I feel like being a friend can get left by the wayside. This year I made a resolution (gasp!) to be intentional with my friendships.

Was it perfect? Heck no! Was it better than the past 5 years? 1000%!

This week I am grateful for the 37 ladies who attended Lyndsay’s Favorite This Christmas brunch, but I am most grateful for the handful of girlfriends who keep me sane, and make time for coffee, lunch, dinner, and bunco! ♥️

Can someone actually decide this?

The Cabernet poured in Piazza Novana, Rome, Italy could easily win. The pasta, the red wine. Gush!

Perhaps it was actually on the roof top of my hotel in Athens enjoying the beautifully lit acropolis at night.

Then there was the local white New Zealander wine in Wellington.

But when I think back to my most favorite glass, it lands me with a Malbec in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In honor of International Women’s Day, I ! I am grateful for the many strong, honorable, courageous women throughout my career who have led me to continuously strive to be the strong woman I am meant to be.

Women with different abilities that come from all different backgrounds and upbringings. Women that have different stories. Each woman brining a new challenge to me, and the future.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to remind my teenage boys that their mom is a combat veteran, who was a leader in the US Army and continues to lead in the military and veteran community through servant leadership today. That respect is universal. That it wasn’t easy for my husband to stay home with an infant and a toddler while I went to Iraq, but that’s what Soldiers do.

What do you talk about at family dinner?

We have a giant map of the world in our dining room. Sometimes it serves to encourage “Who knows world geography best?” or “Who can say the capital of Sri Lanka?” Other times it starts conversations about places we’ve been and things we’ve done.

This particular dinner we were discussing our favorite trips. Mine is hiking to and poking the hot molten lava on The Big Island of Hawaii.

Caleb said the 2 week trip to New Zealand, where we bought the family 4 pack Bungy Jump at Kawarau Bridge in Queenstown. From there he pivoted to wanting to SkyDive for his 16th birthday coming up soon.

For Mark, having been a skydiving instructor, tandem master, and in air videographer, this was a little piece of nostalgia that he hasn’t entertained in quite some time.

Out came the skydiving gear from the back of the closet. Parachute, suite, helmets, and goggles... all being donned by the boys dreaming of taking flight for themselves.

Lord. Help. Me.

“At the supermarket today, I found a small, elderly woman standing in front of a high shelf holding preserves. She was having trouble finding the flavor she wanted because the jars were set back on the shelf.

She couldn’t read the labels. She could barely reach them. I offered to help.

After I handed her the raspberry preserves, she thanked me, paused, and then asked, “Do you know why I buy this brand?”
I laughed and replied, “Because it tastes good?”

“Yes, it tastes good.” She paused again. “I am a Holocaust survivor.”

This was not the conversation I expected on a Sunday grocery run. “During the war, the family that owns the company hid my family in Paris. So now I always buy it. And whenever I go to the store, my grandkids remind me, ‘Bubbe, don’t forget to buy the jelly.’”

I told her that that was the best reason I ever heard to buy any company’s product. And then we both smiled behind our masks and went our separate ways.”

Someone else on Twitter looked into the story and indeed, the town that Andros Company, the makers of Bonne Maman, comes from, hid and saved Jewish families in WW2. It was called Biars sur Cere, which then had about 800 villagers.

From an article, “You have to understand what it was like then. There were posters on the walls, from the N***s and from the collaborators, and they said that if you are found to help a Jew, a freemason, a communist, a socialist, or a pervert, you will be shot on sight.” Despite the great danger in which helping them put the villagers in, still they kept the children safe.”

A good reason to buy Bonne Maman products. And a poignant reminder that when we look out for each other it can change lives, and that there are good and selfless people in the world.

In a world where most all the news we get is bad, sad and ugly, this is what Abundant Life is all about. Hunting the good stuff and remembering why it all matters.

When you travel you get to taken in so much more than yourself. You get to see life from upside down. You can be free from worry and still you can see humanity at its best and at its worst.

How can you love someone you want to hate?

Hate seems to be so abundant today.

But I feel we should make our driving force love.

There is always something we can find love in no matter what, because love is fundamental.

When the world ends, and everything else fades away... these shall remain: Faith, Hope and Love... and the greatest of these is love (1 Cor 13:13)

1. Pray for your “enemies”. Let God soften your heart towards those you are at odds with. Pray for blessings upon them. It’s nearly impossible to pray for a true blessing upon someone you actually hate.

2. Walk a mile in their shoes. If you can really place yourself in the paradigm of someone else, and why they are the way they are, you will likely find compassion for how they got there, rather than hate.

3. Don’t just let it go. This is counter intuitive in my own mind, but there are social issues that need to be changed. We can’t just let the status quo prevail. Keep the issue as the issue. And let the hear in your heart go, in order to make room for change— and therefore love.

MLK is such an excellent example of peacefully changing the country and the world. Be a part of keeping his legacy going.
