Wander back in time.

Èze was not on the itinerary, but due to a flight cancellation and an extra day, we discovered this Medieval hilltop gem towering over the French Riviera coast. Just a quick 30 minute drive from the popular coastal town of Nice and close to Monaco, sits this impressive ancient village packed on a cliff, with a maze of cobblestone streets, shops, and buildings dating back to the 1300s.

The Lobster King of Colombia.

We took a break from the hustle of the busy Cartagena streets by taking a boat cruise over to the Rosario Islands. While Cartagena has plenty to offer, it lacks picturesque beaches and clear blue water. The quick 45 minute trip was the perfect opportunity to cool off in the Caribbean Sea.

High above the fairytale Swiss town of Zermatt is the Gornergrat observatory, where the most breathtaking view of the alps can be seen: 29 peaks surpassing 4,000m across Switzerland, Italy, and France, including the iconic Matterhorn seen here. I also froze my hands taking this.

DAY 8 - SUNRISE TO STORMS

“Concluding our stay at the Forestis was a 5-star extravagant breakfast experience. The dinning room had an insane backdrop of the Dolomites through the windows and breakfast was served on a massive wooden patio outside with small tables and umbrellas. There were SO many fresh and tasty food options - meats, breads, cheeses, fruit, order options and fresh honey straight from a real honeycomb grid. We ate our fill and relaxed in our tower balcony before saying goodbye to my favorite hotel in the world. The Forestis gave us complementary ski lift tickets that took us to the top of the Plose mountain, high above the hotel. We enjoyed some ice cream and amazing mountain scenery at the top, rode back down, and hopped in the car for a 3 hour drive that would take us through Northern Italy, Austria, and into Bavaria Germany. Destination: the famous and stunning Lake Eibsee at the base of Germany’s tallest mountain, Zugspitze.”

“As soon as we arrived... so did the pouring rain. But - this cleared out a lot of tourists and by the time we had rain gear on and at the water’s edge, the skies actually started to clear up as well. Still plenty of clouds covering the peak of Zugspitze, but nice enough to enjoy a foggy vibe of the “mirror lake.” We then hit the road to the small German town of Oberammergau where we dropped off our bags at our small & traditional hotel, and grabbed a bite to eat at Zauberstub'n. Not only did they make some delicious & unique recipes of Schnitzel, but the German owner had been a magician in Vegas for 10 years and showed off some tricks!”

DAY 9 - NEVER FORGET

“Our last day of the trip was both beautiful and sobering. Still in Southern Germany, on the way to Munich we stopped by the famous Linderhof Palace built by King Ludwig II, its design inspired by the Palace of Versailles. The palace itself was not very big, but the grounds and gardens surrounding were quite impressive and absolutely beautiful, and we enjoyed walking through them. We then headed north right outside of Munich to Dachau Concentration Camp.”

“This was the 2nd death camp from World War 2 that I have visited, and both times I came out cold and quiet. I highly recommend that if at all possible, every person should visit one of these camps during their lifetime. It’s one thing to hear or read about what happened at places like this. But when you see the fences, the gas chambers, the graves... with your own eyes. Breathe the air. Hear the stories of survivors. And feel the ground beneath your feet where these atrocities were committed by one group of humans to another... you will be changed. And the perspective you gain on the world - past, present, and future changes with it.”

“On a lighter note, after Dachau we dropped off our rental car and grabbed a final bite to eat (and bottle of wine of course) at the airport (we spent wayyy too much at dinners this trip... lesson learned LOL). We chowed down and toasted to a truly amazing journey of God’s beautiful creation, and soared off into the skies once again!”

DAY 7 - LUXURY

“Day 7 was a busy Friday of hiking, driving, & relaxing. We drove over to the town of Misurina in the morning in hopes of finding parking for our first activity of the day, but quickly realized there was NONE since it was such a tourist hot spot. I eventually found an improvised parking spot LOL and we waited in line for a bus that took us up the windy mountain pass to Rifugio Auronzo, where we could hike around at one of the most iconic groups of peaks in the Dolomites - Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Once again, as we stepped off the bus (& it doesn’t get old, trust me) VIEWS VIEWS VIEWS. The most jagged peaks and dramatic valleys we had seen, and then the 3 peaks of Lavaredo before us, 3 massive towers of rock. We hiked about halfway around them before deciding to head back and hit the road, as we had booked one of the coolest 5 star hotels in the Dolomites that night & wanted to spend time there.”

“I don’t quite know how to describe the drive over to the Forestis Dolomites hotel, but I am typically a pretty good driver under tight & sketchy roads, and this one made me sweat LOL. The road essentially was carved into the side of the mountain & had 1 small lane for a 2-way pass, & was extremely windy and steep. BUT WE MADE IT SOMEHOW to the Forestis and... wow. THIS HOTEL. Please google it. Absolutely jaw dropping. It is situated in the mountainside hidden amongst the trees, with INSANE views of the Dolomites. They recently renovated the entire hotel and built 3 new “tower suits” with the top of each being a 2-story penthouse. We had originally booked a standard room in the lodge below, but when we arrived, the front desk lady said “We are pleased to announce you have been upgraded to a Tower Suite.” LET’S GO. They’re like $900 rooms that have a glass-walled balcony with a lounge bed & alllll the amenities. We explored the hotel, hit the infinity pool, and then took the windy drive down into the town of Bressanone and picked up some meats, cheeses, & wine for dinner (to save some monies ha) and then ate on the balcony enjoying the sunset.”

DAY 6 - THE NOTEBOOK (in italian)

“Okay so lessons learned for this one... Lago Di Braies is one of the most jaw-dropping and stunning lakes in the world - so people are gonna wanna see it. And it was after a nice breakfast at our hotel and a quick drive over to the turnoff for the lake that we discovered the road is closed daily from 8:30am-3pm to manage the flow of traffic. There is a bus you can pay £10 roundtrip that will take you right up to the lake, but the parking lot for that closes fairly early as well, and we BARELY made the cutoff at 9:30am. But... the moment you step off the bus and cross a tiny bridge, the jewel of these mountains shines before you in all its glory.”

“The lake is honestly just spectacular. Worth every minute and dollar spent to get there. After taking it all in, we hopped in a line, waiting about 40 minutes to grab a canoe for an hour on the lake, costing about £30. Once again, worth it. We lucked out on the weather with warm temperatures and fairly clear skies, and enjoyed rowing around and snapping pics. After returning the boat, we grabbed a bite to eat of bratwurst and fries with lakeside views. After relaxing in the sun, it was time to head back down, but once again unfortunate with our timing. It happened to be just around 3pm when the road reopens for tourist parking, and our bus took FOREVER to get to us. But couldn’t really complain with the day we had. And to top it off, we hit the town of Cortina d'Ampezzo that night, and had the most DELICIOUS pasta and pizza of the entire trip at the restaurant Pizzeria IL Ponte - highly recommend.”

DAY 4 - TREKKING

“We got an early start with a quick brekkie prepped by Airbnb Grandma consisting of bread, meats, and fruit, and then walked a mile down to the Mont Seuc Gondola station. The weather was somewhat overcast the entire day with spots of sunshine, which turned out perfect for a cooler temperature trek on the highest mountain plateau in Europe. Our backdrop: the stunning views of the Langkofel Group of jagged Dolomite peaks. Although we had an initial trail loop in mind, we ended up playing it by ear as we descended into the valley finding different trails along the way. Throughout the journey we saw countless tiny little cabins and cows (with their bells constantly jingling) dotting the trimmed green landscape and different angles of the beautiful peaks towering before us. We made a pitstop for brats, fries, and a pint of a local brew in the village of Compatsch and continued our long loop back to the gondola station at the top of the plateau, ultimately a 10 mile hike for us. After riding the gondola back into town, we grabbed dinner at the Sneton Restaurant for a delicious pasta and a local beef goulash strew, of course followed with a bottle of wine. Tired feet and much deserved.”

DAY 3 - LAKE VIEWS

“The night before took us on a 3 hour drive from Liechtenstein through Innsbruck, Austria, to a small Italian mountain village on the border close to Brenner. Our Airbnb doubled as the dairy farm for the village, and we had fresh milk served to us in the morning and got to meet the cows that so graciously provided it. The following 1.5hr drive took us on a fairytale alpine road with cliffside villages, castles, and monasteries somehow built on the craziest terrains. Our ultimate destination was the breathtaking Lago Di Carezza - a lake situated high in the mountains with a stunning backdrop of the Latemar Dolomites group of jagged rocky peaks. Parking was PACKED but we managed to snag a spot a short distance from the lake and found a beautiful trail that took us to the water’s edge for this photo.”

“After soaking in the views and beautiful weather, we continued our journey to our next Airbnb in the town of Ortisei that would serve as “base camp” for some long days of hiking ahead. The drive to Ortisei took us on the windiest and steepest drive I have ever seen, but was justified by the fact that we were climbing the side of mountains to get to the Sella Pass (plz google) which had INSANE views but equally crazy weather as rain started to pour down. In Ortisei, we were greeted by our host at “Grandma’s house” where I got to practice my German (they speak mainly German, a Latin dialect, and Italian in the region) and enjoy some delicious snacks she had prepared for us. We then grabbed a bite to eat at Mauriz Keller where we chowed on some delicious grilled lamb and pizza.”

DAY 5 - PARADISE

“Okay background check. I guess growing up in Colorado, I know mountains pretty well. A year ago I also stood at the highest station in Switzerland next to Zermatt in the Alps, so I’ve seen peaks. But the Fermeda Peaks and Seceda terrain is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I mean just look. Pure paradise.”

“The journey to this hike started with an early wakeup, another South Tyrol breakfast at “Grandmas” Airbnb, and a walk down to a different gondola station that would take us to Furnes, then Seceda. We rode the first gondola over the picturesque landscape of Ortisei (and i am still blown away how they mow the green countryside to look like a golf putting green, even grassy cliffs). We then transferred from gondola to a massive cable car that could hold up to 60 people. This one took us on the sharp ascent up to the 2,500m station at the top of Seceda. Stepping out of the station, we were greeted with these views - and definitely took some time just to soak them in.”

“Our 9-mile-loop hike first took us to the jagged iconic cliff peaks of Fermeda, then down into the valley, essentially in a bowl surrounded by towering mountains. We stopped at one of the “huts” along the trail for lunch (this one was much larger and sophisticated compared to the many tiny wooden shacks dotting the landscape). We chowed on a typical South Tyrolian dish of eggs, ham, potatoes, and tomatoes... and a pint of beer naturally to stay hydrated. We then continued the journey back up to the station, stopping along the way to enjoy the view and take pictures. The weather was gorgeous as well which only added to the beauty. We eventually made it to the station, rode our way back down into the valley of Ortisei & the Airbnb, and hit the road for our next basecamp of Dolomite views: the beautiful town of Cortina d'Ampezzo and the Nord Hotel. The 2 hour drive of mountainous terrain did not disappoint and we settled in for another big day ahead.”

DAY 2 - CLIFF JUMPING & CASTLES

“We kicked off Day 2 with an early morning drive that took us to a hidden gem on Austrian-German border. Our fearless “tour guide” took us on a short hike to a series of cascading waterfalls. He then proceeded to force us to jump from each one into the FREEZING pools below. I recall the last jump being “this one is easy... just don’t jump too short because you’ll hit some rocks... oh also don’t jump to the left or right or you’ll hit some as well” LOL. But in the end we jumped 3 of them, froze our asses off, and then sat down in the warm sun on some towels to enjoy a brunch we packed from our pitstop at a bakery on the way.”

“We then drove to the massive and gorgeous alpine lake Plansee where Luis TRIED HIS BEST to convince us not make the short journey to Liechtenstein because it looked just like the rest of Bavaria. Fast forward 3 hours later and we were munching on pizza at a cafe in the capitol of Liechtenstein, Vaduz (please keep in mind you could drive through the entire country in probably 30mins haha).” All being said - yes Luis was right, but to be honest the views next to the symbolic castle of the city did not disappoint.”

IM BACK

As you all know, despite COVID and many travel restrictions abroad, I have still managed to get out and about. One of my favorite trips late into 2020 was an August 9-day Dolomites excursion that ventured through Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria, and Italy and some of the most insane landscapes I have seen. I am excited to share some of my favorite memories day-by-day!

DAY 1 - DEUTSCHLAND

“I’d like to start off this post stating is a champ. He showed me this iconic spot on the hillside behind Neuschwanstein Castle back in 2017 with AMAZING views of the Bavarian Alps. Clearly so good that I came back to this exact spot 3 years later to soak it all in again.”

“Day 1 kicked off after a late Friday night flight from London to Munich and a rental car pickup that would serve as our whip for the week. Early the next morning, we left our Airbnb (in the small village of Wiedergeltingen) for a quick hour drive down to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. I’ve actually never seen the inside, but with views like this outside I’d say there’s no need. If you loop around to the bridge viewpoint of the castle, cross it, and climb the ridge to your left, this is the backdrop you’ll be greeted with. Later that day we hiked down to the lake you can see pictured here and snagged a paddleboat for a quick cruise around the alpine lake Alpsee.”

“Pre-COVID. Well... Pre-COVID in London that is. But it’s funny how life works. Living in London I had the opportunity to travel all over the world in a short span of time from November to March. Before all the lockdowns. The old normal. Africa. Middle East. Hawaii. Europe. It all becomes a blur really. But theres certain moments that you just never forget.”

“We had just cruised through the Tower of London (it took me 4 months of living in London to knock this one out LOL), scooped up some ice cream for her, a muffin for me (plz restock your sorbet Ben & Jerry’s Tower Hill ty) and were just enjoying a Saturday afternoon walk before the Bermondsey Beer Mile. But she realized this area looked familiar and told me about some unique bombed-out church from the WWII-era that was possibly nearby. We rounded a corner and there it was”

“WWII had always intrigued me and seeing this beautiful church age and the environment take over was serene to say the least. The roof was completely gone allowing for vines and lush vegetation to cover the walls and floors. And we stepped out a doorway to see the Shard off in the distance.”

“And this was just one of those moments. Before the pandemic. The distance. We had been holding hands the entire time and I leaned back to capture this clarity out of the blurriness.”

“Let’s rewind a little bit. How about a decade? 12.21.09.

‘Dad what should I get Mom for Christmas??’

‘Oh come on Dad I know you procrastinated on gifts this year too’

‘What’s a Toblerone? Oh I can get it from Walmart? Easy then’

‘Wait you sure that’s her favorite? How have I not known this before??’

“Year after year I bought my Mom her favorite chocolate for Christmas - Toblerone. Didn’t ever think much of it. ‘It’s the candy bar with the mountain peak on it’ Dad said. In my mind I was just thinking ‘I CANT EVEN EAT THE FREAKING THING BECAUSE OF MY ALLERGIES.’

In 2010 I saw the same peak at Disneyland. ‘Alright Dad what’s the deal is this some sorta chocolate ride? Because we both know damn well W***y Wonka was not a Disney flick.’ ‘No dummy that’s the Matterhorn... it’s a famous peak in Switzerland.’

It’s funny how life works. December 21, 2019. Gornergrat Station. I stepped off Europe’s highest cog railway in the middle of the Swiss Alps. I procrastinated on Christmas gifts once again. I was about to fly halfway around the world to see Mom in Hawaii and I didn’t have a single thing for her.

But the observatory had a gift shop.
And inside was a Toblerone bar.

And as I walked out, the most beautiful peak in the world, the Matterhorn, was towering before me. And I lined up that little peak on the chocolate bar to capture the moment.”

“i distinctively remember one moment where we were at the front of our group’s camel chain and saw a dark shadowy dust ball off in the distance. we quickly realized it was getting closer and closer VERY FAST. my god is it a horse? some desert lion? we had no idea until it was literally upon us that it was a baby camel SPRINTING, and its mother was leader our pack.”

“but we hopped off the camels and landed on the seat of quad bikes and plunged far into the desert.

I had been wanting to explore Portugal for years and finally got my chance for my first adventure to kickoff 2020. And let me tell ya... this was a life-changing trip for many reasons.

Although we only spent 4 days total in the country, staying in Lisbon provided tons of opportunities for exciting excursions such as a day trip to the gorgeous town of Sintra and Pena Palace, only 30 minutes outside the city. Apparently the man who lived here hundreds of years ago had a vegetable face. But hey... catch me waking up in this palace, chilln’ in a bathrobe overlooking this terrace with a cup of coffee in hand? Yeah that’s worth the vegetable face.”

“hahah a lot of Q&A around Romania. had no idea what to expect. but the second we stepped out of the car at the gondola station in the foothills of the mountains... snow flakes started falling. and it didn’t feel like anything i expected. who knows what it felt like. special though. a little pupper was shy and hobbling around on its hurt paw, following us but still keeping a curious distance. i was crouched down waving at him, then stood up, turned around, and saw this. a picture capturing a moment. and what a moment it was.”
