After being back in Scotland (but not yet home) for about 12 hours I drove out to the alps for a brief but top quality spell of work.

I met up with who has come from a top level competitive swimming background and has carried over his dedication and knowledge of training to his climbing. We spent the start of the week developing alpine skills like moving together and some ice techniques in a cave when the weather was biblical for a day. Then we put all the skills to use on the Integral South Ridge of the Moine. We both moved really smoothly as a team and had a great day out. The paddling pool at the Couvercle refuge was also a highlight 👌
Good luck with all your future climbing Dillon!

.johnson.climbing, , Simon and myself are in Southern Greenland and tomorrow we depart into the wilderness for a month of climbing big walls, paddling packrafts, fishing and hopefully not too many polar bear encounters.

Massive thanks go to:
for the clothing
for all the training with the packrafts
for the rafts
And funding from , , Mount Everest Foundation, Scottish Mountaineering Club, , Gino Watkins Memorial Fund and the Slovak Climbing Federation.

All have been a huge help and the trip wouldn’t have been possible without them!

I’ll be back in contact at the end of August. See you soon!

I’ve had an amazing week with climbing some wild mountains around Val d’Herens.

We started off by staying in the excellent Tsa refuge and climbing the Tsalion west ridge. Then we headed up to the where we climbed the spectacular and very exposed SW ridge of L’Eveque. The following day we traveled Pigne d’Arolla and returned to the valley. A brilliant multi day mountain adventure with no one else on our routes. Really awesome effort by Cameron to fight his fears and push really hard all week, well done!

Lots of fun the past 2 days teaching mountain skills to Nell and Andrew. We covered taking coils, roping up on a glacier, crevasse rescue, moving together over rocky terrain and decision making in the mountains. Now they should have some of the basics covered to have mountain adventures of their own. Great to be working for 🏔

Awesome time with the lads from Dundee and .
We’ve had a great week multi pitch rock climbing in the Chamonix valley and around the Dalmazzi hut in Val Ferret. Climbing round the Dalmazzi was a particular highlight, it was brilliant to be the only ones for 2 days in such a wild part of the Mont Blanc Massif. Couldn’t have asked for better company too. Well done lads, catch you next time!

I’m about 2 weeks late on this post, but back in May I had a great couple of days out with Andrew and Rachel on Skye. We all climbed The Spur on Sgurr an Fheadain on day 1 as a warm up and the following day Andrew and I made a single day traverse of the Cuillin ridge. Andrew did amazingly well and we kept up a good pace right till the end. Really satisfying to cover so much enjoyable scrambling terrain non stop. Thanks for a great 2 days both of you and catch you soon!

Photos are thanks to Andrew

Photos from a magical day amongst the clouds last week on Skye.

I guided Craig, David and Connor up Sgurr Dubh Mor. We left the car with low cloud above our heads and the first part of the walk in was pretty muggy, by the time we have reached the Loch in Coire Ghrunda we could see the sun trying to punch through the thick mist. A bit more ascent and we broke through into an amazing, sunny and peaceful world. It was super nice to be cruising along the ridge while looking out to the the nunataks of Run, Blaven and Applecross breaching the sea of clouds around us.

More photos from an awesome trip skiing and sailing in Iceland. Beth and I loved this trip so much we are keen to make it a regular thing. Let me know if you would like to be kept in the loop for next year 🎿

What made this trip so special was the great team of sailers, skiers, cooks and clients. We all got on really well together and had a lot of fun. Thanks again everyone!

Last week Beth and I realised a long held dream of organising a guided trip for clients together that incorporated both of our passions - the mountains and the sea.

Through Beth’s friendship with from the sailing world we were invited to host a sail and ski trip to the Westfjords of Iceland with .

We had an amazing time exploring a wild landscape of snow, sea, hot springs, geysers and waterfalls. It was surreal to ski down to the water each afternoon, walk across the seaweed to the boat, where we were met with a bowl full of muscles instead of the more continental crepe or pizza. We loved all the stories from the seas in the evenings and it felt like the boat was a family home.

Massive thanks to Siggi, Annukka & Salka for having us on board your lovely boat and thanks also to Vegar & Soazic for preparing such amazing food for us each day. We can’t wait to come back again!

Cycling out of El Chalten we had to keep stopping to turn round and admire the view.

For the first part of the day strong tail winds blew us along without the need to peddle.
Then a turn in the road put us into the wind meaning we had to be in the lowest gear and in each other’s slipstream just to go down hill. At one point we both got blown off the road and the wind would pick the bike up if I didn’t hold it down. We couldn’t restart again as the second you balanced on the bike you were blown backwards. So we had to push our bikes until a friendly local took pity on us and picked us up.

Exploring Patagonia by bike the past few weeks with Beth.

So nice to be on a journey with no fixed timeline, just enjoying the adventure is it comes to you. We met some really lovely people who we cycled with for a few days, especially & who were approaching the end of their 7 month journey down the length of South America. We felt very lucky to be able to join for the highlights.

Now great to be back in Scotland again as always!

Beth and I are running a guided sailing & skiing trip to Iceland this Spring, who else would like to join?

We still have a few spaces available. The dates are 4th - 13th of May and we will be on the boat 6th - 11th.

All food and accommodation will be provided on board the boat for 5 nights.

No sailing experience required and we won’t be doing any open ocean passages so minimal risk of sea sickness. This is for anyone with ski touring experience.

We will be skiing around the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve peninsula which has no roads and is only accessible by boat.

Send me a message for more information ⛷

I am still looking for 1 person to join me on a guided Himalayan trek through the Khumbu region of Nepal this October.

This will be the first 2 weeks of October 2024. You will be part of small group of up to 8, giving you the chance to meet fun and like minded people. You will have the chance to see some of the worlds biggest and most rugged mountains as we cover mountain passes up to 4500m. In the evenings we will be staying in local tea houses where you will also get to experience new food, different cultures and meet friendly people.

Send me a message if you are interested and would like further details 🇳🇵🌄🏞

Brilliant adventure with and to climb Supercouloir on Mont Blanc du Tacul.

It’s a very aesthetic line being a giant 800m symmetrical ice gully and is in good condition just now. However, because of this, there were a lot of teams keen to do it the same day as us. From what we could tell at least 6 other teams. We didn’t want to get stuck in queues or have chunks of ice knocked onto us so we opted to have dinner and lie in bed for a couple hours in the hut before setting off at 12 o’clock. However despite this we weren’t the first party on it as a team of Finnish climbers had set off at 6pm!

We climbed most of the difficulties in the dark, but it was nice to have some views on the upper easier section.

About a year and a half ago I received a very intriguing email from Simon Yearsley and Malcom Bass explaining that due to their forced early retirement from climbing they were passing over all their remaining potential new route ideas to various worthy suitors. Over the years the pair had collected a list known to them as “The Project” and from that they had assigned me the mission of adding the original direct start and direct finish to their existing route, Pobble, which sits on Lord Reay’s seat on Foinaven in the far northwest tip of Scotland.

I remember attending a talk given by Simon at one of the Scottish tooling comps many years ago (I must have been about 16) about climbing new winter routes on Foinaven and I’ve wanted to explore it for myself ever since so this seamed like a very fitting time to do so.

So on Thursday, myself and tasked with this quest, made the long drive north. Using mtn bikes we covered a large part of the very long and bleak approach through the darkness and the rain to find the crag remarkably in condition. We managed to add 2 brilliant new pitches to an already great climb. The second of these, the top crux corner (pic 1) was a huge highlight. Topping out in the dark was a particularly special feeling. It was a huge honour to have been sent the information from Simon and Malcom and to be able to complete the route which we have dedicated towards them.

Yesterday I joined .pavitt on his silly mission to climb 7 winter routes graded tech 7. One of the main reasons I signed up for this was that a few years ago when .skelton and I climbed the 3 Glen Coe classic VII’s Neanderthal, Central Grooves and Poco Loco in a link up day it was one of my favourite winter days out and still is to this day. Hopefully someone does this again, maybe Matt will now that he’s on the link-up train?

Anyway yesterday we were in the northern corries which were the obvious place for this with lots of close routes, ab offs and routes that can be climbed in a big single pitch. Also Matt had attempted the challenge on Saturday so knew all the beta off by heart. It was a great adventure and made for something a bit different. Cheers Matt!

The routes we climbed were in this order!
Fallout Corner
The Migrant
Auricle
Coronary By-pass
Stirling Bomber
The Genie
White Magic

All routes were either V 7 or VI 7

Pic 5 is trying to get psyched up for a dark and spindrifty ascent of white magic

Really nice winter shake down with .johnson.climbing today. Got my psych back for winter after not feeling that motivated for it having just returned from a trip to Nepal and been recovering the past 2 weeks. We climbed The Migrant after starting up Nocando Crack, but it was very verglassed. Cheers Callum!

Send me a message if your interested in a days guided winter climbing over the next few weeks. There’s some great early season mixed climbing conditions in the Cairngorms at the moment. Get it while it’s cold!
