Elle has just returned from a fantastic 2 week trip, discovering both North and South India with her family. Here are are top tips of travelling in India as a family (of 5): 1. Family-Friendly Accommodation: Look for hotels with spacious family suites or interconnected rooms, especially in major cities like Delhi, Jaipur, and Mumbai. Some accommodations offer family-friendly amenities like pools, kids’ clubs, and dining options that cater to diverse tastes (like chicken nuggets on repeat!) A bit of pre-planning will ensure everyone has enough space and comfort after a day of exploring. 2. Embrace Local Transport: While taxis and cars are convenient, try local transport options like auto-rickshaws and trains for short journeys. It’s a fun way for the whole family to experience India up close. If travelling longer distances, opt for overnight trains in air-conditioned sleeper classes or consider hiring a driver for flexibility and convenience. They importantly know all the local toilet stops, too! 3. Take Advantage of Kid-Friendly Activities: India is filled with experiences that ALL kids will love, from exploring historical forts, learning how they block print to spotting tigers on a safari in Ranthambore. Research destinations with family-friendly attractions, and mix cultural experiences with fun outings for a balanced trip. 5. Spice Levels: Indian food is renowned for its spices, so it’s wise to start with milder dishes for children and let them adjust gradually. Many restaurants will happily adjust spice, don’t be afraid to ask! Look out for dishes like butter chicken, naan, and vegetable pulao that are typically mild and loved by young travellers.
