Many different snake species inhabit the , but only a few are venomous, such as rattlesnakes, copperheads and cottonmouths. During the warmer months, all snakes are on the move, so watch where you step, where you put your hands and keep a respectful distance.

While snake bites are rare, if you are bitten by a snake you believe to be venomous, try to remain calm and seek medical treatment as quickly as possible. For more on the do's and don'ts of treating a snake bite, visit appalachiantrail.org/plan-and-prepare/snakes

The Blue Ridge Parkway highlights a range of landscapes, rising to capture the most spectacular views in the mountainous sections, and dipping and peeking into gently rolling farmland, high meadows, and low stream valleys. In addition to being among the most bio-diverse areas in the country, the park also features a wide variety of cultural landscapes that reveal our relationship with place and strengthen our understanding of historic events, significant people, and patterns in American history. Want to learn more about the special resources the Parkway protects. Join us on Thursday April 22 for one of five Virtual Open House Events, presented in partnership with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation

Number 9 on our countdown of the top post of 2020 is this lovely shot of fall color reflected in the waters of Upper Linville Falls.

“Like water which can clearly mirror the sky and the trees only so long as its surface is undisturbed, the mind can only reflect the true image of the self when it is tranquil and wholly relaxed.” ― Indra Devi

Sitting by the water on a cool fall day is a great place to reflect on life. Where is your favorite place on the parkway to find relaxation and reflect?

We are only a few days from RISE UP, and we want to encourage all of our community and visitors to meet us at the Cape San Blas Lighthouse on Thursday, October 10th.

We also would like you to light up the night by wearing YELLOW. Some of our neighbors from Jackson County came up with this idea to show the world we still shine, and we think it is fantastic!

There will be music and food for free. Please bring your chairs or blankets. We will take the night to commend our community on the strides that we've all taken together in the last year to rebuild this beautiful area.

Start exploring all of our waterways from Highland View Boat Ramp and Park or just wade from the shore to catch fish and crabs. Known to be the "Gateway to the Gulf," Highland View boat ramp is the ramp closest to accessing the Gulf of Mexico. You can also access St. Joseph Bay, St. Joseph Canal, and the Intracoastal Waterway! Much of the time you can see people wading out from under the bridge in hopes to get a big bite!

Finding the perfect shell on the beach is a little like buried treasure. You can also feel for shells just below the surface. There is an indescribable feeling you get when you find the perfect one to add to your collection. However, remember to not take live shells (shells that have living organisms still inside). That includes living sand dollars you find in the water.
