Bird of the Week: White-fronted Bee-eater (Rooikeelbyvreter)
This week, we're shining the spotlight on the dazzling White-fronted Bee-eater! 🌈
These birds are incredibly social, living in large colonies and working together to raise their young. Watch in awe as they perform breathtaking aerial displays while hunting for insects. True to their name, they have a knack for catching bees and wasps in mid-air, using a clever technique to remove the stinger! 🐝

We had the most incredible encounter today! 😍🐘 A herd of elephants, including the cutest little calf we've ever seen. These gentle giants are truly majestic.
Did you know that African elephants are the largest land animals on Earth? They're incredibly intelligent and social creatures, living in complex family groups led by matriarchs. Their tusks are actually elongated incisor teeth and can weigh up to 100kg! 🌍
We’re back on safari and it seems like even the big cats and hyenas are feeling the chill today. Lazy day in the bush! Not a lot of action, but we’re still loving every minute of it. 🦁🐆

Meet the unexpected kingfisher! 👑 The Brown-hooded Kingfisher might not be the first bird that comes to mind when you think of kingfishers, but this bird is full of surprises!
Unlike its fish-loving cousins, the Brown-hooded Kingfisher prefers a diet of insects, lizards, and even small birds! You're more likely to find them in trees than perched on a riverbank.
These birds are skilled at catching their prey on the ground, making them unique among kingfishers.

We’re still shaking from tonight’s unbelievable experience! Our night drive safari turned into a heart-pounding adventure when we witnessed a pride of lions taking down a buffalo. It was a raw display of nature's power. We’re in awe of the African wild! 🦁🐃
Bird of the Week: Rattling Cisticola (Bosveldtinktinkie)
The Rattling Cisticola, or Bosveldtinktinkie as it's affectionately known, is a common but often overlooked bird. 🐦
Despite its small size, this bird packs a powerful voice, hence the name "rattling".
You'll find them in open savanna and scrubland, making them a familiar sight in many parts of South Africa.

The Majestic African Lion: King of the Savanna 🦁
Did you know that lions are the only social cats? They live in prides of up to 40 individuals, including related females, their cubs, and a few adult males.
While the males are often seen as the powerful leaders, it's actually the lionesses who do most of the hunting! They are incredible predators, working together as a team to bring down large prey. We were so happy to see these amazing lions in Pilanesberg National Park.

We just had the most incredible experience whale watching in Hermanus! 🐋💙 These gentle giants were absolutely breathtaking! Did you know that Southern Right Whales, which are commonly spotted here, can weigh up to 80 tons?! 🤯 And their calves are adorable! We were lucky enough to witness some amazing tail slapping and breaching. This is definitely a must-do for any nature lover!

Just had the most insane experience! 🦈🤯 We went shark cage diving in Gansbaai and it was absolutely mind-blowing! These majestic creatures were so close, I could feel the water vibrating! 😱 Definitely a bucket list check! 🌊

Hippo encounter of a lifetime! Just met Jessica, the world's most famous hippo, and let me tell you, it was UNREAL!
This South African legend greeted us with a yawn that could rival a lion's roar (think BIG!). We learned all about her incredible story and her unique bond with humans. She's truly one-of-a-kind! We even met her baby. How CUTE is it!!
Getting up close to such a majestic creature was an unforgettable experience. Nature never ceases to amaze!

Soaring 100 meters over Soweto with the wind whipping through our hair - UNREAL! This bungee jump is definitely not for the faint of heart, but the views and the rush? Totally worth it!
Soweto Towers isn't just about the jump though (although, let's be honest, that's pretty darn incredible). It's a whole adventure zone! They've got all sorts of activities to get your heart racing.

Maropeng, Cradle of Humankind.
Learned SO much today about our ancient ancestors, from Mrs. Ples (one of the most complete early hominid skulls ever found) to the evolution of humankind. The interactive exhibits were incredible - felt like I was stepping back in time!
The Wonder Caves!
Today, we ventured deep underground on a thrilling day trip to The Wonder Caves, 3rd largest gave in South Africa! It was an incredible experience to explore the hidden world beneath our feet.
We started the tour with a friendly guide who introduced us to the fascinating history of the caves. Did you know stalactites (the icicle-shaped formations hanging from the ceiling) grow at a rate of only about a centimetre per 100 years? That means some of the ones we saw today could be hundreds of thousands of years old!
As we ventured deeper, the temperature dropped, and the air became refreshingly cool. The cave formations were breathtaking - towering stalagmites (the counterparts to stalactites that grow from the floor) resembled mythical creatures, and the cave walls shimmered with crystallised minerals. Can you see the Cave Monster and praying Maria?
The Wonder Caves were a true wonder to behold, and I highly recommend this adventure to anyone visiting Johannesburg!
Black Wildebeest
They may not be quite as "black" as their name suggests, but the Black Wildebeest is an undeniably fascinating creature! Found grazing the grasslands of South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini, these herbivores are a vital part of the African ecosystem.
Unlike their migratory Blue Wildebeest cousins, Black Wildebeest are fiercely territorial. They stake out their own patches of land and fiercely defend them from intruders. Males use those impressive horns for dominance displays and fights with rival males. The horns are unique, curving forward and then upwards in a distinctive hook shape.
One of the easiest ways to distinguish a Black Wildebeest from a Blue Wildebeest is by their tail. Black Wildebeest have a contrasting white or cream-colored tail tip, earning them the nickname "White-tailed Gnu."
So, next time you're on safari in South Africa, keep an eye out for these territorial grazers with their unique horns and tell-tale white tails!
