Thanks to its hardness, high resistance to weathering, abundance, and non-abrasiveness, basalt is widely used in the construction industry:
➡️ To produce:
-Roads.
-Pavers.
-Tiles.
-Wall cladding.
In addition, the volcanic ashes or lapilli has special characteristics thanks to its porosity, it absorbs water and moisture and prevents evaporation. Therefore, it is used in gardening and even for agriculture!
In basalt we can find olivine, which is a semi-precious mineral. One of the souvenirs or jewellery that we commonly find in stores in tourist centers of the islands contains this mineral. On the other hand, it is also possible to find obsidian, which has been used since ancient times; the ancient aborigines or “Guanches” used it in the form of knives or spearheads

In Basalt finden wir Olivin, das ein Halbedelsteinmineral ist. Eines der Souvenirs oder Schmuckstücke, die wir in Geschäften in Touristenzentren der Inseln häufig finden, enthält dieses Mineral. Auf der anderen Seite ist es auch möglich, Obsidian zu finden, das seit der Antike verwendet wurde; die Ureinwohner (oder „Guanches“ ) verwendeten es in Form von Messern oder Speerspitzen.
🇬🇧 Volcanic bombs are formed during their trajectory in the air and reach the ground in solid form. In Lanzarote we are lucky enough to have a giant volcanic bomb (more than two metres high) next to the Colorada volcano in the Natural Park of the Volcanoes (Timanfaya).
Lava flows are those molten rocks coming out of the volcano. These liquid lavas spilled by the volcano move down the slope and usually need the push of new lava to continue advancing. These lava flows form lava fields with a smooth, cordate or "pahoehoe" type or those known as "malpais" or "AA" with an irregular and rough surface.
Did you know that there are rivers of lava that run up to 20 km in Lanzarote?
The volcanic cone or Cinder cone: it is formed by layers and layers of lava and pyroclasts (volcanic material) that accumulate due to the repetition of eruptions in the same area over a long period of time. In Lanzarote it is rare to find a symmetrical volcanic cone due to the effect of the constant trade winds.

🇬🇧La Corona volcano: It is one of the highest volcanoes on Lanzarote at 609 metres.During the eruption, it created a large badlands known today as "Monumento natural de la Corona" with an extension of 2.280 ha.
This sea of lava created several tunnels and is where we can find two famous "centres of art, culture and tourism": The Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua, unique in the world.In the same tunnel we find the "tunnel of the atlantica". It is the last submerged part, considered the largest of its kind in the world, and where many unique species have been found. That is why it has also been classified as a "Site of Scientific Interest Los Jameos".

On Lanzarote many lichens of the genus Ramalina and Roccella were used.
From the genus romalina: The orange colour was extracted for dyeing. It was also used as mattress stuffing or for caulking ships. This lichen is found in almost all volcanic areas.
From the genus roccella: the purple colour was extracted and historically used in the dye industry. It is found on the cliff faces that are hit by the northeast trade winds.

Auf Lanzarote wurden viele Flechten der Gattungen Ramalina und Roccella verwendet.

The cultivation of grapes developed from the eruptions of the 18th century (Timanfaya), where the fertile areas were covered by a layer of lapilli (volcanic ashes).
