Mauritania - Search for the Desert Crocodiles

10 Weeks until we start our brand new tour
-
29th October to 11th November (meet in Dakhla on the 27th October or join us at Pizzas on the Piste on the 19th)
-
Open to all. Vehicles must have a minimum 1000km fuel range, good quality off road tyres, full recovery gear (compressor, recovery boards, straps etc). you must be self sufficient for food water etc for 7 days in the desert.

14 days from Dakhla back to Dakhla giving 2 days for border crossing and 12 days exploring Mauritania.
-
We will drive the Iron Ore Train Piste and visit the Eye of Africa before turning south to search for the Desert Crocodiles. The route then turns west towards the Atlntice coast and Nouakchott. from here we follow the coast north vositing the Banc D’Arguin national park before returning to Morocco.

This is a Recce trip so plans may change as we travel, but thats all part of the adventure.

Rainy day in the UK so it’s Route planning for our Mauritania trip this autumn

The unseen part of putting together trips. I start with a rough idea then work through the details using multiple map and sat image sources.
1 - Customised Open Street Maps Topo map created by me viewed in Garmin’s Basecamp or Map Source software
2 - Digital version of the old French IGN maps
3 - 2nd OSM Topo map from mapy.cz
4 - Google Sat Imagery
5 - Bing Sat Imagery

The superb nakarte website allows switching between the last 3 so Ican pick out details. The different sat images often show different levels of detail and potential problem areas. Finally this is all saved as a gpx file for use on a Garmin 700i

Many hours of work result in a better end result than just buying a guide book or downloading from wikiloc.
