Indian e-visa back in operation for UK travellers!

After an extremely long wait, the Indian e-visa system is now back in operation, making travel that much easier!

Traditional Samurai culture can still be experienced in Fukushima prefecture, only an hour and a half by bullet train from Tokyo.

Here you can learn about the Aizu clan who were known for their military prowess and the fighting spirit of their warriors and were considered to embody the samurai spirit.

In modern day Fukushima, you can still learn about many of the aspects that embody the spirit of the Samurai and the sword is perhaps the greatest symbol. Swords forged by Aizu blacksmiths were known for their strength and sharpness and are of huge spiritual significance and not seen merely as a weapon but also a symbol of spiritual self-protection.

Visitors can take advantage of the experiential tours that have been introduced to celebrate the rich culture and history to be found here.

Tickets are now on sale for the greatest party the world- the Rio carnival.

It attracts over 2 million people each year and there is fierce competition amongst samba schools to take part.

Due to popularity the Rio carnival extends over several days, here are the keys dates for 2023:

Access group parade 17th or 18th February.

Special group parade 19th or 20th February.

Winners parade 25th February.

Various types of tickets are available, and the carnival does have a special sector for tourists.

While you’re in Brazil enjoy the many delights of Rio and a short hop away why not take the opportunity to take in the magnificent Iguazu falls just s short flight from Rio or head to the colonial town of Paraty for a beach break.

Our recent fact finding trip to the sunny island of Cyprus had us making a stop at the Zambartas winery, in the small village of Agios Amravrosios, about 40 minutes from Limassol.

Zambartas is a small family-owned winery which was established by grandpa Zambartas in the 70s and is now run by his son and wife, Marcos and Marleen.

They offer a range of tastings, we opted for the single vineyard tasting which included all 5 wines and a platter of local produce including halloumi produced with milk from goats fed with lees (leftover grape sediment).

We took a short tour of the winery and ended our visit with a tasting of the sweet dessert wine, Commandaria, made exclusively from 2 indigenous grape varieties, Xynesteri and Mavro.

It’s well worth a visit, enjoy your tasting in a contemporary space with views out to the surrounding countryside and learn a little about Cypriot wine production.

Seeking a break from the world?

Head high up into the Himalayas, with a trekking holiday, incredible scenery, peace and stillness away from the world.

Staying in tents is not for everyone and for those seeking a few home comforts at the end of a long day hiking, then consider a lodge trek.

Start your trek near Pokhara and head up into the foothills of the Himalayas.

Spend the day enjoying the stunning views, stopping off at tea houses for refreshments and sharing stories with people along the way.

Arrive at your lodge, relax with a hot shower, followed by a drink or two during happy hour with the Himalayas as your backdrop. Tuck into a delicious home cooked Nepalese meal before tucking yourself into bed, warmed with a hot water bottle to keep the cool mountain air at bay.

Be awakened in the morning with a steaming mug of “bed tea” and a hot breakfast before heading onto the next lodge.

These treks can be done by most reasonably fit people, walking is on uneven paths for approximately 5-6 hours per day, at attitude, which makes it that much harder! You are accompanied by a local guide who will not only show you the way but fill you in on life in the Nepalese Mountains.

For those wishing to explore higher up then we can combine the lodges with stays in small tea houses, these are more basic but do provide a comfortable place to overnight.

Prepare for sensory overload when heading to the bustling north African city of Marrakesh in Morocco.

Jemaa El Fna Square is a focal point, people gather here to enjoy the food on offer at the various stalls and be entertained by the street performers, enjoy some local music, a spot of dancing and maybe have your fortune told!

A trip to Morocco is not complete without a trip to the Medina and the one in Marrakech has been awarded UNESCO world heritage status. Take a stroll around the lanes, discover ancient buildings, fountains, and mosques, and see local artisans at work, keeping ancient traditions alive.

Opt for a stay in a traditional riad, these can vary from larger establishments to small boutique properties. If you’re looking for Moorish architecture but with the luxury of an outdoor pool and on-site spa, try the La Sultana, just 10 minutes from Jemma El Fna Square but there are many beautiful riads to choose from.

Marrakesh can be easily combined with other Moroccan cities, or maybe a trip into the Atlas Mountains for a more active break.

Then plan to visit northern Thailand and in particular Chiang Mai. This year on the 8-9th November you can join the celebrations at the Yi Peng lantern festival which can be traced back to the Lanna Kingdom and was traditionally celebrated to mark the end of the Monsoon season.

Locals launch floating lanterns into the night sky which is said to release negative energy and welcome good luck and fortune for the coming year, A favourite place to release the lanterns is on Nawarat Bridge along the River Ping in Chiang Mai but there are many places to enjoy this charming tradition.

Northern Thailand offers visitors a chance to experience traditional tribal cultures and a host of adventure activities. You can either fly or take an overnight sleeper train from Bangkok.

Colombia still struggles to separate itself from the legacy of Pablo Escobar, in particular Medellin, the stronghold of his empire, which has with hard work and dedication, moved on to better times and transformed itself.

Nicknamed the city of eternal spring due to its pleasant year-round temperatures, Medellin now offers visitors a vibrant city, full of art and culture and party central at the weekends.

Nowadays the once dangerous Comuna 13 barrio has been transformed with the introduction of the ‘escalaras elictricas’, this series of escalators provide a much needed link for the locals who lived up high easy access to the city below.

Enjoy panoramic views once you’re at the top and marvel at the street art that forms an integral part of the area, it’s worth taking a guided tour to fully appreciate the local artists. At weekends enjoy markets and street performers.
You will also find a network of cable cars that crisscross the city, providing an efficient and cost-effective transport network for locals and tourists alike.

The innovative urban renewal earned the city a Lee Kuan Yew world city prize for Medellin’s transformation into an outstanding liveable city.

Medellin is also home to world class art galleries and its very own home-grown artist, Fernando Botero, who has donated 23 of his bronze states to the city, you can find them in Botero Plaza, just outside the Museum of Antioquia in the old quarter.

There is of course a lot more to see and do in Medellin, include it in a wider itinerary of Colombia.

The beautiful city of Mandawa, in Rajasthan is often overlooked but well worth a stop off to admire the stunning havelis, traditional, ornately decorated mansions the city is renowned for.

Once an important stop on the silk route, this once bustling town now resembles an open-air museum, take a stroll along the main thoroughfare, and enjoy the palaces, havelis and forts around the town.
It makes an ideal first stop on a road trip to Rajasthan from Delhi.

To fully appreciate the beauty of the architecture, make an overnight stop, a good place to stay is Castle Mandawa, a heritage property that will transport you back to a bygone era.

If India is on your bucket list, now is a good time to start planning your adventure, travel mid-September onwards is recommended, when the monsoons have subsided, and the temperatures have cooled down.

Here comes the sun….

As the school holidays loom and you’ve still not booked your summer escape, consider heading to the sunny island of Gran Canaria, offering fantastic weather, blue skies, and warm waters.

🐪If you like to explore, head out on a trip to the Dunes of Maspalomas, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the Sahara, take a walk up or take the easy option and opt for a camel ride.

🏊🏼‍♀️Head to the waters on a cruise and perhaps enjoy some snorkelling in Puerto de Mogan.

🥾Hikers can enjoy a walk up to the crater of the volcano followed by a wine tasting. 🍷

Like diamonds in the sky...

If you happen to find yourself in Mexico City from mid-June to mid-August, consider taking a side trip to visit the pine and oak forests in Nanacamilapa.

It’s approximately 2 hours east of Mexico City, and during the season you will find the skies lit up each evening from approximately 8.30 pm for an hour. The endemic fireflies are on the lookout for mating partners. Individually they are yellow points of light wandering crooked paths, rhythmically blinking and as a whole they form a swirling mass of twinkling lights- like diamonds in the sky!
Accommodation options include a night at Octli Glamping near the firefly sanctuary.

To make a longer trip, continue for an hour to Puebla and stay at a charming boutique hotel. Explore Puebla and perhaps make a stop at a chilli liqueur factory. The spirit is produced using Poblano chiles which are sundried before being macerated in cane spirit., a popular brand being Ancho Reyes. Head back to Mexico City making a stop in Cholula along the way.

Free mud bath?

When traveling to a country like Israel, with so much history and culture, it’s easy to forget that fun side of this diverse country.

The temples of Angkor Wat have had visitors enthralled for some time.

The temple complex is the largest religious monument in the world and was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu but later transformed into a Buddhist complex.

Angkor Wat once served as the capital of the Khmer empire and the five towers are designed to represent the five peaks of Mount Meru and the walls and moat the mountains and lake that surround it.

It was awarded UNESCO status in 1992 and now welcomes over 500,00 visitors a year.

While the temples in Siem Reap alone are worth a visit to Cambodia, the capital Phnom Penh is also worthy of a short stop, a visit to the Royal Palace is well worth the time.

Combining Cambodia with Vietnam is a popular choice and a trip along the Mekong is a wonderful way to travel between the two countries.

The half-moon shaped hotel studded with porthole like windows is a visually stunning and was brought to life by Ruy Ohtake and João Armentano.

The hotel is discreet, walking around the corridors to your room, its dark with low lighting, the rooms are modern, with huge porthole like windows and some have slanted floors.

The rooftop restaurant offers an amazing menu, headed up by Chef Emmanuel Bassoleil. On our visit we enjoyed a fish dish inspired and sourced from the Amazon. The sashimi was plentiful and of course delicious, in part due to Sao Paulo having a huge Japanese community.

Up on the rooftop you will find a bar, restaurant, and a lap pool for residents, all with stunning views across the city.

The Unique Hotel is where architecture, art, and gastronomy meet, it’s a hip hang out for locals and tourists alike.

Puducherry is a quaint town with a distinct French influence and featured in the film Life of Pi.

Once called Pondicherry, known affectionately as Pondy and now Puducherry, sits on the eastern coast of southern India facing the Bay of Bengal.

Palais De Mahe is in the French quarter and features a peaceful courtyard and shady verandahs where you can relax amongst the greenery or take a refreshing dip in the pool.

The building was originally a French colonial mansion, and the interiors are a pleasant mix of Indian and French style. Many of the items you will see at Palais De Mahe are produced locally, very much in keeping with the CGH earth philosophy of supporting local communities and sustainability.

Enjoy drinks in the hotels charming cocktail bar, afternoon tea in the indoor-outdoor restaurant or a delicious dinner in the rooftop restaurant.

The Ministery of Crab.

The doors opened to this now cult restaurant in 2011 and was the brainchild of Chef Dharshan Munidasa who teamed up with Sri Lankan cricketing legends Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara.

It began with Chef Munidasa showcasing the lagoon crab which is exported to Singapore to be used in the popular chili crab dish.

The popularity has spread quickly, and you will find restaurants in Shanghai, Manila, Mumbai, Maldives and Bangkok.

The signature dish is pepper crab, black pepper is native to Sri Lanka and the peppercorns are hand crushed to produce this amazing dish.

So next time you visit one of these popular cities, why not pop in and enjoy a taste of fresh, top-quality crab, cooked to absolute perfection, prepare to wear a bib and get your hands dirty!

Paraty, located on the Coste Verde (green coast) is a popular resort in Brazil, known for both its colonial old town, a UNESCO world heritage site and the forests and beaches that surround it.

The town gained affluence when gold from Minas Gerais was transferred to Paraty, which then travelled by boat upto Rio and then onto Portugal.

Today the town is popular with tourists who enjoy the old town and the beautiful beaches as well as hiking trails in the lush forests.

Visit a distillery of local cachaça (Brazilian rum made with sugar cane) and learn about the artisanal methods of production. Chances are, you will have had a few caipirinhas whilst on your travels in Brazil, this delicious cocktail is a mix of cachaça, lime and sugar and delivers quite a punch!

We would recommend a stay at the charming Porto Imperial Pousada, located in the historical centre of Paraty, amongst the colonial buildings and cobblestone streets and dates to 1804. The pousada is only a few steps from the bars, restaurants, and shops.

If you’re looking for something more upscale, then the Pousada Literária de Paraty is a perfect choice. It’s charming and sophisticated and located right in the centre of town.

Paraty is an ideal extension to any holiday to Brazil, enjoy a few days relaxing in the sun before heading home.

Costa Rica offers something for everyone, jungle adventures, zipline through the trees or take a hike exploring the flora and fauna, white water rafting down rivers or escaping up into the cloud forests for an escape from it all and enjoy some birdwatching. If you venture into the jungle at night, you’re likely to come across these little creatures- frogs! An image of a red eyed tree frog always makes us think of Costa Rica. Cristalino Lodge is in the southern Brazilian Amazon, an area rich in birdlife, mammals, butterflies, and orchids. The lodge has been featured in National Geographic as one of the world’s best eco lodges. The lodge is firmly focused on responsible tourism and sustainability, and they have also set up the Cristalino Foundation to support local communities through education, research, and conservation. You will find luxurious accommodation, personalised service and delicious menus based on local produce but perhaps what makes it so special is its location as an ideal spot for birdwatching. Explore the area on the hiking trails around the lodge or take a canoe trip along the river but for the best views, climb up one of the lodges observation towers. Cristalino Lodge features a 2 50-metre-high observation towers, located at different strategic points within the reserve. From the towers, try and spot a few of over 586 bird species that have been observed in the local area. With the help of the naturalist guide, you can see birds such as macaws, parakeets, parrots, tanagers, and cotingas and being up high will allow you to take some amazing photographs. Cristalino Lodge is in the southern Brazilian Amazon, an area rich in birdlife, mammals, butterflies, and orchids. The lodge has been featured in National Geographic as one of the world’s best eco lodges. The lodge is firmly focused on responsible tourism and sustainability, and they have also set up the Cristalino Foundation to support local communities through education, research, and conservation. You will find luxurious accommodation, personalised service and delicious menus based on local produce but perhaps what makes it so special is its location as an ideal spot for birdwatching. Explore the area on the hiking trails around the lodge or take a canoe trip along the river but for the best views, climb up one of the lodges observation towers. Cristalino Lodge features a 2 50-metre-high observation towers, located at different strategic points within the reserve. From the towers, try and spot a few of over 586 bird species that have been observed in the local area. With the help of the naturalist guide, you can see birds such as macaws, parakeets, parrots, tanagers, and cotingas and being up high will allow you to take some amazing photographs. Kilts - do they or don’t they? Last night saw the start of a new series on Channel 4, featuring Alan Cumming (Four weddings and a funeral) and Miriam Margolyes (Professor Sprout in Harry Potter), who are taking a somewhat unconventional road trip around Scotland. Celts have been wearing tartan for thousands of years and it’s something that’s quite unique to Scotland. Kilts are still a popular choice, especially for Scottish men on their wedding day. The weaves and colours hold a lot of symbolism and are not just random designs, there are currently over 8000 registered tartans on record. Last night’s episode featured a visit to a tartan factory, where it’s possible to have your own tartan designed and produced, a reflection of you and your family history and it’s an option that we can incorporate into your Scottish holiday.
