In this unbelievable forest, not only can you encounter some quetzals, but also the “Colibri Vino” ? Ever heard of him ? This hummingbird is the second smallest bird in the world and his colours are unbelievably radiant. And do you know the legend that Guatemala has with this bird ?

The legend wants that a late afternoon of November a young girl called Pilarcita, whom was the most beautiful weaver of all Huehuetenango, was quietly working. She was so beautiful that all the men around were conquered by her smile. Her beautiful dark hair covered with the bright colours of the cotton threads that she was weaving.

This afternoon, a young man appeared. He slowly moved closer to her and took her hands. They glanced at each others, their heart rates accelerated and without much happening, they both fell in love.

They spent the whole afternoon together, not saying a word, only their hearts were speaking. Their lips didn’t need to move for them to understand the perfection of this instant.

They spent their afternoons together, discussing their lives, their families and their dream of, one day, run away together to live happily forever.

One of these afternoons, they were observing the sunset and listening to the singing of the birds. All of a sudden the father of Pilarcita appeared and took her with him by force. He also threatened the young man, he would never see her again.

After a week, Pilarcita was very sad. She was only working at home, not allowed to leave the house. One afternoon, while she was in the garden, a radiant hummingbird appeared. He was flying around her, from one side to the other, trying to catch her attention, and landed on her side.

Magically, the hummingbird transformed into her amazing lover and they stayed together this afternoon. When Pilarcita’s father got closer to see what was happening, the young man transformed again into the hummingbird and went to hide between the huipiles that the girl had woven.

And like this they continued their hidden romance. Every afternoon the magic hummingbird was coming to Pilarcita’s room, observing her from the roof. When nobody was around he could join her carefully and transformed into a human again.

One day, the father surprised the two lovers. He became so violent that the young man took Pilarcita’s hand and together they transformed into hummingbirds and escaped flying in the sky of Huehuetenango.

Since that, the young ladies of Huehuetenango weave hummingbirds on their huipiles, hoping that one day they would change into a prince that could make them happy forever.

Have you ever heard of quetzals ?
Quetzals are not only the currency of Guatemala. Quetzals are the national pride of the country. In the Mayan mythology the quetzal represents liberty. If you cage him, he would die of sadness. The bird inspired the lyrics from the Guatemalan national anthem : “antes mu**to que esclavo sera” (rather death than slavery).
This resplendent bird is known for his beauty. His irradiant feathers blue and green, floating behind him when flying, as well as the red of his chest. According to the legend, he got them during the last fight of the warrior prince Tecún Umán, the last ruler of the Quiche Maya. When the latter fell dead on the floor, his spirit guide the quetzal landed on the bloody body leaving it with distinctive red feathers on its chest.

Have you ever heard a quetzal ?
Most of the quetzals in Guatemala live up north of Guatemala, in the cloud forest near Coban. But there is still one place around the lake where you can watch them. Are you ready for this experience ?

A long time ago a boy named Quetzal, “beautiful”, was living in the mountains and rainforests of Guatemala. Son of Cacique, powerful Quiche leader, Quetzal received the day of his birth a jade and obsidian necklace. It had been proclaimed that his destiny had been decided, “he would live forever among the Quiche Indians.”.

What we propose is a one-day hike in the cloud forest of Santiago.

This forest is outside of Santiago de Atitlán, and together we will dive into this other world, with gigantesque trees, and no noise except the sound of birds.

Are you ready for this introspection ?

It is a time to wander in an ancient forest. A sacred forest. You will have time to move, contemplate and maybe, who knows, the quetzal might visit us …

Our guide is Rolando Tol Gonzalez. He was born in the village on the edge of this forest, and has been wandering in it since then. He is the best bird specialist around the lake, and the one who discovered that quetzals were still living here, around the lake.

What we are proposing you is a 6km hike (back and forth), with a lot of bird observation, insight on forest ecology, mayan mythology and Rolando stories. A translator comes with us.

The hike is of "moderate" difficulty. The pathway are not paved but very not steep. We spend about 4h30 inside of the forest.

We will have a private lancha from San Marcos/Tzununa at 8am, and coming back in the afternoon. A little time will be given to enjoy Santiago and its beautiful handcrafts (güipiles, food market, paintings, etc).

Each group would be of 5 persons. Bring your friends !

The price is Q400 (and can decrease if group of more than 5 people)

This includes:
Private lancha San Marcos/Tzununa - Santiago
Pick-up Santiago market - Nature reserve
4h30 of bird tour in the reserve
Spanish to English/French Translator
Local traditional vegan lunch
Pick-up and lancha back

Our bird expert is managing a reforestation project.
This money will enable them to continue their reforestation project. Their main focus is on replanting native species of trees, whom: promote biodiversity, preserve the ancestral species, and improves wildlife welfare by creating shelter and providing food sources.

Are you ready for this experience ?
