Interesting read. I’d love to see this in person, the whole entire area… !!

Old Leanach Cottage on Culloden Battlefield in Scotland is believed to be the only remaining building from the battle in 1746 The cottage is located on the northeastern side of the battlefield and is one of the last surviving examples of the single-story thatched buildings that were once common in this area. The small cottage stands alone today, but historic maps show that this area was densely populated in the past; the land was divided in smallholdings and the local population was engaged in agriculture. There were two other buildings next to it. One was a barn which, a story says, it was set on fire by government troops in order to kill about thirty wounded Jacobite soldiers that were seeking refuge in the barn. The other one was probably a stable.

The Battle of Culloden Scottish Gaelic: Blàr Chùil Lodair) was the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising of 1745. On 16 April 1746, the Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart were decisively defeated by Hanoverian forces commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.

A MacDonald and a Campbell!

After all these years, I often wonder what our ancestors would say about current friendships between a MacDonald and a Campbell. What stories each one could tell. The unimaginable truths about love and loss through times of clan war. Especially through all the stories we know and read about that involve deceit and death, which were extremely prevalent in Scotland for centuries. In current times, inviting a Campbell into our household is not one of fear and anticipation. Last night was one of many where we engaged in unified friendship and perhaps an unknown historical forgiveness.

Another battle that my MacDonald clansmen fought: Battle of the Shirts. This will be an area to visit if given the chance.

The Battle of the Shirts (Scottish Gaelic: Blàr na Léine, also the Battle of Kinloch-Lochy) was a Scottish clan battle that took place in 1544 in the Great Glen, at the northern end of Loch Lochy. The Clan Macdonald of Clanranald and their allies the Clan Cameron fought the Clan Fraser and men fro...

Cille Choirill,Brae Lochaber: Fist-fights at funerals, ghosts haunting a cemetery, said to have been built by a Cameron chief who was told to do so by the Devil himself in the guise of a cat, a dispute between the dead, and the last resting place of at least two great Gaelic bards (Dòmhnall mac Fhionnlaigh nan Dàn and Iain Lom MacDonald), are but some of the claims made of Cille Choirill. Situated on a steep hill high above a plateau where the River Spean runs in the Braes of Lochaber, the small fifteenth-century church of Cille Choirill offers a stunning vista down over Glen Spean. The site has religious connections that span back to at least to around 600 A.D., during the days of the Irish missionary and monk, Cairell, who is said to have founded (or re-established) this Christian place of worship.

My 4th great grandfather was Dougald MacDonald. Born in 1765 in Inverness Co.

He married twice, first to Flora Shaw and then to Sarah Shaw. I am a descendant of his and Sarah’s son Simon who was born in 1811 in Inverness.

They all emigrated and settled in the Bay du Vin area of New Brunswick, Canada in 1815. Their descendants then travelled on and settled in Stillwater, MN.

I wonder the circumstances(?)...

The Highlands of Scotland proved to be a natural recruiting ground for emigrants that were to help build North America during the 18th and 19th centuries.

I am currently at a standstill while looking into our lineage. However, I just stumbled upon information that may be helpful to me while looking into genealogy records, so I thought I’d share!

A traditional naming pattern was often used by Scottish and Irish parents until the later 19th century:

First son usually named for the father's father
Second son usually named for the mother's father
Third son usually named for the father
Fourth son usually named for the father's eldest brother
Fifth son usually named for the mother's eldest brother
First daughter usually named for the mother's mother
Second daughter usually named for the father's mother
Third daughter usually named for the mother
Fourth daughter usually named for the mother's eldest sister
Fifth daughter usually named for the father's eldest sister

“A Red, Red Rose” by Robert Burns 🌹

O my Luve is like a red, red rose
That’s newly sprung in June;
O my Luve is like the melody
That’s sweetly played in tune.

So fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun;
I will love thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only luve!
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my luve,
Though it were ten thousand mile.

I love this poem very much. It expresses the love between a man and his woman.. but could it also be about his homeland, Scotland, as well? It makes me wonder some. Regardless, I chose this beautiful poem in honor of “Burns Night”.

I am a land owner in Scotland! Well, kind of! 😊

For Christmas, my sweet daughter had me open the magnificent gift of land ownership located on the Hougun Manor Estate, which is a 90 acre estate situated on the west shore of Coniston Water in Cumbria. I was given an official certificate asserting the legal rights to assume the honorific title of Lady Heather of Hougan Manor! This entitlement registers me 5 square feet of dedicated land within this estate in the existing natural environment.

What this is, is a donation that helps keep this land from being built on in the future and preserved in it’s natural state. What a wonderful idea and such a thoughtful gift of love. Knowing how much I love my newfound Scottish heritage, and even though we are not true owners, but really just donators to their cause, the idea was so much fun and full of love! ♥️

Now, as a “landowner”, isn’t it required that a Scottish tradition be enforced, in-person, obviously?! 😉 What is the traditional Scottish way to break in a new land? I will have to research. In the meantime, however, you may still call me Lady Heather, if you’d like! 👸🏻

‘Haud Hogmanay’ to everyone today as we say goodbye to 2020!

As for many, I am ready to rid this year’s curse of coronavirus. We had it twice in our house; first with our daughter, then the rest of us five months later. I have done a lot of praying this year as it brought us worry and fear.

I’m looking forward to a year of continued travel and stronger personal relationships. The one thing I learned was “in a dark time, the eye begins to see”, and this rang true for me in many ways.

As a family, we had our fair share of struggles with being confined and it continues to be so at the moment with our governor’s restrictions. However trying at times it has been though, thankfully, it helped our family become stronger and more intimate during these close quarter times. We all became the best of friends and argued less. So that part of it was not a curse at all, but a blessing in disguise.

Also, the reality of what true friendship is and means to me was a lessened learned. Whether it is friendship via family, friends, coworkers, etc., it is very important and should be equally heartfelt and sincere. Here’s to positivity and lifting one another up in the new year!

Regardless, let’s say goodbye to the dark times of 2020 and cheers to a new, fresh and amazing year on ‘Ne’rday’! My wish to everyone is to build yourself up and to strengthen positive relationships!

Cheers to 2021!🥂
(And that my Ne’rday wish of my Scottish dream will come true this year!)

The aftermath of Culloden included being sold as slaves. I’ve heard only a little about Scottish slavery, it sounds so surreal and not even that long ago. Irish slaves were also very common during this time period and in previous years.

I often wonder who My G-g-g-great grandfather Dougald MacDonald’s father, uncles, grandfathers were. What happened to them? Since he was born in Inverness County in 1765, I am quite sure there’s some interesting history and information out there.

I should clarify as to what clan it appears whom we are from. As previously mentioned, our clan: Clan MacDonald of Keppoch a.k.a. Clan Ranald of Lochaber is noted this way because Keppoch is IN Lochaber. This clan is also a branch of the much larger clan: Clan Ranald a.k.a. Clan MacDonald or Clanranald, one of the largest Scottish clans. Additionally, this clan originated from Somerled, who was a mid-12th-century Norse-Gaelic lord.

Listed are the clan branches of Clan Ranald a.k.a. Clan MacDonald:
MacDonald of Islay (historic chiefs)
Baron Macdonald (current chiefs)
MacAlister (senior cadet branch of Clan Donald)
Macdonald of Sleat (Clan Donald North)
MacDonald of Dunnyveg (Clan Donald South)
Macdonald of Clanranald (Clan Ranald)
MacDonald of Keppoch (Clan Ranald of Lochaber) ***********
MacDonald of Largie (Clan Ranald Bane)
MacDonell of Glengarry
MacDonnell of Antrim (MacDonnells of the Glens)
MacDonald of Ardnamurchan (Clan MacIain)
MacDonald of Glencoe
MacDonald of Lochalsh

The Keppoch Castle was the seat of the Clan MacDonald of Keppoch until it passed to the Mackintoshes in 1690. It is located near to Spean Bridge in Keppoch, which is now a private residence, unfortunately unavailable to tour.

The MacDonald’s seemed a fierce bunch, surely standing ground and fighting for what they believed in. This battle was fought against a Mackintosh clan on August 4th, 1688 near Roybridge, in the Lochaber region. The MacDonald’s of Keppoch, along with the MacDonalds of Glengarry and Glencoe, triumphed over the slain battlegrounds with their surprise attack. This memorial serves as a marker for the area in which the Battle of Mulroy was fought.

Since I’m on the topic of war, I’d love to tour the Glencoe area, as well. This was once a war stricken and defeated area when on February 13th, 1692 the Campbell clan invaded and killed many of the Glencoe MacDonald’s during what is known as the Massacre of Glencoe.

From what I read, this clan of MacDonald’s were friends and allies, and I would have to imagine that some may have been relatives, as well, of my clan: Clan MacDonald of Keppoch a.k.a. Clan Ranald of Lochaber, as this clan was also a branch in the area of the larger clan: Clan Donald. They fought for the Jacobite causes together, as well as the tragic Battle of Culloden.

On a side note: the romanticism of war for many is grotesque; but for me, it is the fact that within it lays ones life, full of love and loss. History with all it’s possible meaning, uncensored.

Anyone who’s anyone, with a combined love of Scotland and history, knows all about the Jacobite Risings. Especially if you’ve tuned in to the popular Netflix series, Outlander. To be honest, this is what first sparked my interest in finding out more about my Scottish ancestry. Scott and I were both sucked into this intense series and watched the first three seasons, all in just two months during the beginning of the Covid pandemic.

Anyways, finding out who fought during this battle would be interesting to me. To learn of their stories. What courageous ancestors of ours fought for what they believed in and tried to protect their lands from the British? I would LOVE to learn more and tour the battlefield grounds of Culloden.

Learn about the Jacobite period in Scottish history, including the Jacobite Risings, important figures, life in 18th century Scotland and more.
