Following my visit to Cayo Santa Maria, I wanted to share my thoughts on the region and the country as a whole, in hopes that my clients can make an informed decision when considering their travel. Of course, feel free to message me any time if you have thoughts or want to plan a trip!

- The rumors of shortages and supply issues are overblown. I made the mistake of parroting what I had been hearing, and that's why I wanted to see for myself. Cuba has the same challenges it has always had. The only major shortage I saw was toilet paper and paper towel in the public bathrooms. Food options have *always* been inconsistent. If there are severe issues with food/other items being in short supply, it is most likely the resort's fault.

- About 90% of the economy in Villa Clara (where Cayo Santa Maria is located) is based on tourism. The rest is mostly fishing and agriculture.

- Because of the above point, the locals in this region are eager to promote their region. They work hard and are some of the friendliest people you'll find. The staff and workers will go above and beyond, and at no point in time did I or any of my colleagues ever feel unsafe.

- I visited a little over 20 resorts in Cayo Santa Maria. I was told there are 29 but some are closed or closing soon. The ones I saw are actively accepting bookings, and two or three are undergoing some renovations and changes. I found most of the resorts were not overly busy, but this is also a bit of a low season.

- I found that most of the food I ate was quite good! I rarely felt like I needed to add salt or pepper, but both items were often available if needed. Of course this opinion is subjective.

- If you go to Cayo Santa Maria, you will fly into Santa Clara airport. It takes about 1.5 hours to get to any of the resorts, so be prepared for that.

- No one lives on the islands in Cayo Santa Maria. Everyone who works on the resorts comes from the towns along your path to the Cayo. This also means that beaches at the resorts will only have guests on them.

- The beaches are also some of the best you'll find in Cuba and perhaps the Caribbean, and every resort I saw had the same fine, white sand beaches and turquoise waters.

I've had an opportunity to join Sunwing Vacations on a wonderful familiarization trip to Cayo Santa Maria, a region of Cuba that I had previously never been to! These are some images I took between last night and today. We're inspecting a couple dozen resorts in the area over the next few days.

So far, it's been an excellent experience here, and I'm really glad I had the chance to come back to Cuba after over 10 years. The people here are amazing and so grateful for tourism business. The beaches in Cayo Santa Maria are unparalleled; basically powder. The water is as warm and inviting as the people, and the food is much better than I remember! More pictures to follow in the coming days!

St. Andrews, NB is a fantastic port of call for smaller luxury cruise ships like this one. The Pearl Mist sails in a variety of Canadian bodies of water, such as the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence river, and of course the incredible Bay of Fundy, which St. Andrews sits on the shores of in Southwest New Brunswick.
