The Effects of 1991 Mt. Pinatubo Eruption

PINATUBO: POSITIVE EFFECTS

Tourism: Many active and dormant volcanoes bring hundreds of thousands of tourists to those areas each year. In regard to transportation, restaurants, shops, and hotels, this tourism generated a lot of employment. Volcanoes can create new land for human habitation. In Building Materials like Granite, which is used in the construction industry, is formed by volcanic activity. And in the Fertile Soils, the Volcanic soils are very fertile. These rich soils are called laterite soils and are rich in minerals. Scientists from the US Geological Survey and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology now closely monitor Mount Pinatubo.

PINATUBO: NEGATIVE EFFECTS

The effects of lahars and floods on people is not complete without mentioning damage to infrastructure and agricultural lands--damage that has profoundly affected livelihood and quality of life. Lahars inundated 15 km of roads, damaged 13 major bridges throughout the 1991-92 period, and threaten to affect another 10 bridges in the coming years. Most of these families once lived in the densely populated barangays of Pampanga, the province that bore the brunt of lahars in the first 2 years. Porac, one of the most severely affected of central Luzon's once bustling towns, symbolizes Pampanga's travails. Many of its residents have left. The former residents of barangays devastated by lahars, the disaster mitigated an internal process of social differentiation. Prior to the calamity, the population in these villages was divided into those with access to agricultural assets or opportunities for overseas employment and those without. Lahars buried agricultural lands, equipment, and houses in these communities regardless of the wealth of the owner.

Yes, its filming location is in Philippines, specifically in Porac Pampanga according to a page, Philippine Shocking History.
Philippine Shocking History named the robot as “Porac Babo Robot” and said that the gigantic robot was neglected by Pampanga government so it became rusty.

Oral/Unique traditions, oral folks beliefs and culture.

The Binulu Festival which started in 2005, highlights the cooking of rice and viands such as fish, pork, chicken and other seafood stuffed and cooked together using a variety of bamboo called bulu. The festival is held every year in late November and aims to create a sense of community, as participants represent their barangays and would have to come up with a binulu dish with the help of the community.

Brief History of Porac

The town of Porac named after the abundant "Purac tress" encountered by the first residents and settlers of the are. It is believed to be the earliest town established in the province of Pampanga. The municipality was founded on the 31st of October in the year 1594. It is originally spelled as “Poraq” after the name of the nearby Poraq River of the nearby town of Floridablanca, the municipality became formally known and spelled as Porac on September 16, 1867.

As the municipality of Porac has its fair share of hilly and mountainous terrains in the majority of its plains and fields, it should come as no wonder that agriculture would play a pivotal part in its people’s livelihood. However, back then, Porac was a ranch in the slope of the Batiawan mountain water was scarce in the mountains, residents were compelled to move to the lower grounds near the “Poraq River” to sustain their need of water. By 1853, the settlements in Porac grew to six barangays namely Dolores, Mitla, Manibaug, Pulung Santol, Pias y Pio and Salu with a total population of approximately 5,500 people. In the early 19th century, Porac became somewhat of an established town with a thriving agricultural sector. It had a functioning local government as well as its very own church. To protect the community from any attacks orchestrated by the Balugas, a Guardia Civil detachment was stationed in the municipality. Spaniards from this detachment were known to marry the locals– a feat which gave the place its distinct and notable Spanish mestizo population. Today, Porac is known to be a vital source of granite and a tamping grown of minerals.

After the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption, six (6) lowland and three (3) upland barangays namely Camias, Cangatba, Diaz, Inararo, Mancatian, Manibaug Pasig, San Jose Mitla, Mitla Proper and Poblacion were either partially or completely buried under lahar. This forced residents to evacuate to different temporary relocation sites in neighboring provinces of Tarlac and Nueva Ecija. In 1992, the National Government, through the Mt. Pinatubo Commission and the Municipal Government started building several relocation sites within the municipality. In 1995, the Pio Model Community was finished and housed displaced residents from Cangatba, Mancatian, Manibaug Pasig, Mitla Proper, Poblacion and San Jose Mitla. This was followed by the relocation of the Aetas from Barangay Inararo to the Planas Tent City in 1997.
