Attention Visitors!
We've recently been made aware of a popular video going around on Instagram of someone skiing off the rim of our amphitheater and into the canyon. We would like to remind everyone that skiing in the amphitheater is illegal and heavily damages our rock formations. For the preservation of Cedar Breaks, behavior like this is unacceptable. Thank you to those that made us aware of the situation, if you see illegal activities in the park, report them as soon as possible.

Snowshoe in Cedar Breaks

Have you ever been snowshoeing and heard a strange BOOM noise?
This phenomenon occurs when the layers of snow beneath you suddenly collapse, and the air rushing out of the collapsed space creates a BOOM sound effect.
Snow accumulates in layers, similarly to sedimentary rock. Over time, the layers that have been buried deep in the snow start to degrade. The ice crystals rearrange and are no longer cohesive, creating a layer of "sugar" snow. When sugar layers are buried beneath heavy wet snow, their structure becomes very fragile. Sometimes walking around on the surface of the snow is enough to collapse those layers.
This is what causes avalanches to occur. The heavy wet layers no longer have anything to support them from underneath, so all that snow tumbles down the slope. If you ever hear that boom sound on the side of a mountain, you're in big trouble!

Beware!!! This weird weather has caused unstable snow!

Small avalanche hit SR-143 above Brian Head today. If you were at the avalanche presentation tonight by BH Patrol (thx), you would call this a "clue" about backcountry stability. Pic: Brett W. (thx!)
