The most mysterious section of the Empire State Trail: the Champlain Valley Trail is closing out our “Sections of the Trail series! But beware: experienced bikers only ⚠️

With 199 miles in length — and nearly all of it on-road alongside highways and the Adirondack mountains ⛰️, the Champlain Valley Trail is a challenging yet rewarding venture from Albany up to the Canadian border. 🚴🇨🇦

Prepare for canalways, beautiful bridges, small towns, and lots of vehicle traffic — with your final destination across the border! And make sure to at least consider Amtrak for one of the Trail segments, and experienced bikers have noted this section is dangerous for biking (see slide 5). 🛑

Here is our six-day guide for you to bike the entire Erie Canalway Trail — save this for your future adventures!

The Erie Canalway Trail is the longest of the three Empire State Trail segments at 354 miles, and in some ways the easiest to travel for campers, with multiple campgrounds along the way in stats and local parks.

We’ve included hotel and campsite suggestions for each night of the stop, as well as maps and mileage. Please be aware this Trail has on-road sections next to 55-MPH Highway traffic in several areas, so this is for experienced bikers only.

This week we’re thrilled to talk all about the Erie Canalway Trail! Spanning 351 miles and across nearly the entire state of New York, this addition to the Empire State Trail includes a beautiful, winding path along the historic Erie Canal. From historic villages to national parks (& the most campsites of any segment of the Empire State Trail) to big cities to Loop the Lake at Lake Onandaga, this trail is an absolute treat to visit.

Introducing our Sections of the Trail Series, where we’ll go through different segments of the Empire State Trail and give you maps, day trip plans, and cities to visit.

The Hudson Valley Greenway Trail starts in Manhattan in Battery Park and twists and turns under the GW Bridge and past the World Trade Center in the greatest city in the world. Once you’re out of the city, you can visit iconic attractions such as the Walkway Over The Hudson, and visit a litany of small towns with beautiful scenery and local amenities. Hudson, Olana, New Paltz, and many others are on the way up. You’re also a short ride from the beautiful Catskills and Adirondacks if you’re in the mood for mountain biking 🚵‍♀️

Did you know the Empire State Trail is the longest multi-use trail in the United States? Opened in 2020, this fresh set of trails spans 750 miles across the entire lengths of New York — from NYC to Canada to Buffalo. You can also use the Empire State Trail to connect to a network of other trails across the rest of the state — waterfronts, mountains, and small cities galore. Many of you have biked this trail, but you can also walk, e-bike, snowshoe — and in some cases, ski or snowmobile! There are so many hidden gems across the beautiful state of NY and this trail is unlocking them for more and more outdoorsy people. Have you visited this trail yet?
