Retreats vs Festivals: what’s the difference❓

We hear lots of people using the terms ‘retreats’ and ‘festivals’ interchangeably. And whilst everyone will have their own personal definition of each word, we thought we’d share ours in the hope of giving better clarity on our offerings 💫

🎪 Festivals

• Festivals generally consist in groups of people with common interests/values who come together over a period of a few days to celebrate 🎉

• They are often large gatherings (hundreds or even thousands of people) and offer a program with multiples sessions to choose from.

• Meals are usually not included and taken in your own time. Participant can generally arrive/leave as they please.

🧘 Retreats

• Retreats consist in smaller groups of people who generally come in with an intention, or to work on something specific 🎯

• They are often focused on spiritual or self-development and there is only one program for the entire group.

• Everything is communal: meals, activities, sleeping and free time.

• Most retreats discourage or even forbid the use of mobile phones in order to cultivate an environment free from distractions 📵

• Retreats are about 'retreating' from the world for a set period of days in order to look within.

While the two offer very different experiences, we’re big fans of both. We believe it's as important to celebrate and enjoy ourselves as much as working on ourselves and making progress as a human being 💗

Sunbathing in bliss,
Receiving buttercups.

Taking up space,

With soft power,

Of self-censorship.

Being more me,

Intimacy,

Retreatant spotlight 🌟

We felt call to share a poem from Kristi, who travelled all the way from Colorado to attend one of our retreats this year 🌎

During a Zoom call with her yesterday, she revealed just how much the retreat had an impact on her, and that she’s still feeling the aftereffects 6 weeks later: “Your work has changed my life and that of others as well” 💫

Her poem is a message to our group, 43 strangers from all ages and walks of life coming together and fusing as a big family for 72 hours before going our separate ways 🥲

Here it goes:

This is the loving thing

Weeks later, I still sway at odd moments with the remembered rhythm of spirit and sound

Having emerged from this metamorphosis with courage, as there is only reason to fear when we are in separation

So you too can be brave, dear ones

Because like the earth below us, which supports our short lives on the surface with its layers of fossilized remnants

We remain tenderly upheld and bound by these sun-dappled moments, now relegated to this shared past

Though we may be a community in diaspora and spread to far-flung places

The opportunity today is to forge on in open-hearted blessing with ourselves and others

Who also seek a way through hard and stony places to lightness

This is the loving thing. 💖

We’re very excited to announce we’ve launched a new sponsorship scheme to enable even more people to join our retreats 🙌

While we strive to make our retreats as affordable as possible in order to make them accessible to a bigger pool of people (after all, our motto is 'Transformational retreats for all'), we often receive messages from people asking for discounts or volunteering opportunities as they can't afford a place 💸

On the other end of the spectrum, we’ve had someone share the other day that they estimated their retreat experience to be far superior than the price tag and would have easily paid at least double! 💰

This got us into putting together a sponsorship scheme to where we match generous souls with those who aren't in a financial position to pay full price to attend 💕

We’re still landing from the retreat we just ended last weekend in Portugal. It was deep, powerful, insightful yet fun (so much fun!) 😁

One of the things we can never get enough of on retreat is the scrumptious food at Embercombe 🤤

We don’t know how they do it, but they always manage to prepare mouth-watering, nutritionally-balanced meals. All being completely plant-based and mostly organic and locally sourced (including from their own garden). Now if that’s not wholesomeness, we don’t know what is! 💯

“Yesterday I returned from a retreat in Devon with Ecstatic Experiences. I would more describe it as an experience rather than a retreat, and it blew me away completely beyond what I had expected 💥

I had never even been to an Ecstatic Dance before and everyone I spoke to couldn’t believe I had thrown myself in for a full retreat of them! 😅

As I looked around the room one evening, watching everyone I thought, this is what freedom looks like. Freedom from inhabitations, shame, conditioning, self-consciousness - pure bliss ✨

It was certainly one of the more intense experiences I’ve had, but for all the right reasons. No phones allowed at all so we really disconnected from the outside world 🌟

My intention for the retreat was to surrender, and I’m proud to say I really did. I’m still processing but the growth has been powerful ☄️

We had daily sharing circles of seven, which allowed us to talk through how we felt. The women in my group were just beautiful and we had so many synchronicities 💞

I connected with so many other incredible human beings, many with amazing offerings - what a group of people. The whole weekend felt like stepping into an ancient, spiritual world. The land at Embercombe felt spiritually charged somehow ✨

Time also had a completely different measure unlike I have ever experienced, it felt as though I had been there for weeks 🌀

I haven’t even scratched the surface on how it all was. I am still coming back down after so much medicine and expansion whilst happy and grateful for my life.” 🙏
