Home sweet home!
Did you know Bermuda’s colourful homes and buildings aren’t just designed for show? Here are some fun facts about architecture on the island:
➡️ Bermuda’s iconic white stepped roofs are designed to harvest rainwater with grooves that direct water into an underground tank, providing fresh water in a sustainable way.
➡️ Our homes used to be all painted with a whitewash which created some navigational confusion. To help distinguish one home from the other, they started to incorporate other colours. It is now a tradition on the island to paint your house not only a vibrant colour, but a different colour than your neighbour!
➡️ Bermudian homes are made of limestone blocks quarried right on the island with elevated foundations, which are designed to withstand inclement weather.
➡️ Homes are strategically positioned to catch the island’s cooling breezes, minimising the need for air conditioning.
