Watching documentaries in the back of a Fitzroy bar since 2011. We are a casual documentary-loving group that meets up to watch one film per month.
New attendees always welcome! The films are curated by a panel of group members at the start of the year. The group is convened by Gabby Haynes, who also runs the social media and newsletter.

NAIDOC 2018 celebrates the invaluable contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made and continue to make to our communities, our families and our history with the theme ‘Because of Her We Can’. While their role in society has often been invisible, unsung or diminished – L...
An intimate portrait of Jane Goodall, who defied the odds to become one of the world’s most admired conservationists
Hi friends! I’m sorry about the radio silence lately. As you may know 2017 was a busy one for me and 2018 will be busier. As such, I haven’t been able to lock in regular times for doco club 2018 as we’ve done for the last six years. However I’m determined to keep things rolling, so I am planning on running things as an occasional series, and will let you know some dates soon. If you want to get more involved in the organisation or more importantly have doco suggestions, please be in touch. Love, Gabby. PS Nadya did an amazing job keeping things going last year! Xx PPS Here are some docos currently on Netflix, including Herzog’s Lo and Behold which was on our list last year but we didn’t get to show (ignore the date in the link, it’s been updated for 2018) https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2017/01/the-50-best-documentaries-on-netflix-december-2016.html
Though Netflix continues to purge its older documentary titles, there is still plenty to see here.

Change the record is a not for profit organisation campaigning for national action to close the gap in imprisonment rates and cut disproportionate rates of violence experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, particularly women and children. The organisation has teamed with the makers of Prison Songs to raise awareness through private screenings of the film.

Looking forward to see you there.

A sad, deeply felt film – part documentary, part fiction – about the radical changes taking place in China. By Peter Bradshaw
Tonight ABC 2 8.30pm. Part of last year's program, this is a terrifying insight into the stuctural and social barriers to reporting and preventing sexual crime on uni campuses. http://www.abc.net.au/tv/programs/hunting-ground/
An Official Selection for the 2015 Sundance and Sydney Film Festivals, The Hunting Ground takes audiences to the heart of a shocking epidemic of violence and institutional cover-ups across college campuses in America.
If you missed seeing this at doco club, well worth checking out now on SBS On Demand - it will make your heart sing!

First Australians chronicles the birth of contemporary Australia as never told before, from the perspective of its first people.
This is not surprising but very infuriating - only 2 MPs turn up to a screening of Chasing Asylum at their workplace.
If Peter Dutton really wanted to deal with the difficult issues in his portfolio rather than scoring cheap political points against protesters who engage in civil disobedience, he might have come to see Chasing Asylum, a feature documentary that screened in Parliament House on Tuesday night, just a…

August 30, 2016 : A Personal Reflection By Renee Tajima-PeñaShare: I once considered documentary to be a fallback for filmmakers of color who were shut out of the fiction universe. I was wrong. As it turns out, we may be more under-represented in nonfiction filmmaking. Sundance estimates...
