One of my favorite ways to learn about a new place is to pop into a used bookstore and buy the oldest possible tour guides. Witness here: the smoking, modeling, racing, singing monkeys of the October 1988 Golden Mount Fair, Wat Saket’s most ~sanuk~ fundraiser. Photos by the late great Luca Invernizzi Tettoni #1988

Happy Birthday Jane Fonda! In a world of virtue signaling celebrities doing it for the photo ops and tax breaks, she's a real one.

How to Curse Your Spiritual Enemy:
1. Visit Cholon’s Quan Am assembly hall, built by descendants of immigrants from Quanzhou in 1740.
2. Make it past the fastidious security guard.
3. Feed the Hu Ye (tiger god) a snack. He likes ham and steak.
4. Rip a picture or stomp a doll of your enemy in front of him.
5. Burn gold paper and incense to pay him.
6. Also burn an offering for the Bixie to protect you from revenge. She likes gold, silver, and jewels only tyvm!

The tomb of Emperor Tu Duc, the last independent emperor of Vietnam. Though he lived here for the last 20 years of his life (ten years on either side of defeat by the French) he is not actually buried here. Fearing his body would be treated disrespectfully, he was buried in a secret location near Hue by 200 workers, who were then ambushed and murdered after completing the job, to keep the secret. His true burial site is still unknown.

Built in 1804, the Imperial City in Hue originally had 160 buildings. Most were destroyed in a 6 week battle between the Viet Minh and French in 1947; more were destroyed during the Tet Offensive in 1968. Today only 10 buildings remain and they aren’t in great repair.

The Huyen Tran temple was built in 2007 to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the princess who brought 1000 square miles to Vietnam from Champa through marriage. A plaque there reads ‘some women’s problem’s must be solved by the nation, some national problem’s must be solved by women.’ Hmmm.

Completed in 1593, the “Japanese Bridge” linking the old Japanese and Chinese neighborhoods of Hoi An is formally the ‘bridge to welcome visitors from afar’. 400 years later it’s still a hit with tourists, and the almost-rotten-fruit lady is as much of a fixture as the dog and monkey gods.
