If you visit Japan during April and May, the country is covered in vibrant greenery, known as "Shinryoku." While early spring is busy with visitors chasing cherry blossoms, shinryoku is a beautiful season to witness as trees and plants begin to bud and grow new leaves. The newly sprouted leaves are breathtakingly bright and fresh, contrasting beautifully against the blue sky. Shinryoku occurs at different times in various parts of Japan, depending on the region's temperature and elevation. This presents itself as an opportunity to wander to the lesser-known countryside, as well as to enjoy spring beyond the sakura's bloom. It usually starts in late April in southern areas and lasts until June in northern regions like Hokkaido and Tohoku. Untold Originals Episode 1: Yamanashi In this series, we look to showcase authentic stories of Japan by taking roads less traveled. This perspective will allow you to go deeper into the traditions and culture, as well as the people who give Japan its distinct atmosphere. Our first episode takes us to Yamanashi prefecture, more specifically to Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine: the gateway to Mount Fuji. Before climbers make their ascent up Japan's sacred mountain, they come to this shrine to pray for their safety, as well as to pray for the active volcano not to erupt. The tall cedars that line the entrance are there to protect the shrine from eruption. These scenes were taken on January 15 during Otakiage, the day of the annual tradition of returning your ofuda (a talisman) to the shrine for its respectful cremation. Shinto talismans are said to only carry their divine powers for a year, thus the need to return them to their original shrines and obtain new ones. As snow falls at the gateway to Mount Fuji, this sacred place becomes even more magical.
