Botswana's 10th day of the Lockdown &

Today we acknowledged a relatively small & loud but beautiful specie of bird as the bird of the DAY!!

The northern grey-headed sparrow(Passer griseus), also known as the grey-headed sparrow, is a species of bird in the sparrow family Passeridae, which is resident in much of tropical Africa occurring in wide range of open habitats, including open woodlands and human habitation, often occupying the same niche as the house sparrow in Eurasia.

This species feeds principally on seeds and grain, like other sparrows, but will readily take insects including termites, especially when feeding young.
The calls include cheeps and chirps, and the typical sparrow churring alarm call.

Did you know that the Lilac Breasted Roller was the National Bird of Botswana due to its’ vibrant colors and resemblance to the Botswana Flag.
Unfortunately, the throne was stolen by the Kori Bustard, the heaviest flying bird that’s native to Africa.

Back with a Bang! After a wonderful walk.

These animals are water dependent and drink daily, they’re mostly active early morning and early afternoon. They fall pray for many species of predators e.g lions. Their defence mechanism is fleeing from predators at all times as well as kicking at them viciously.

Zebras are home-range animals and they do not mark territory. They have a typical social group called a breeding herd or family group with 1 dominant stallion (mare) with their goals (babies).

Mares come into oestrus throughout the year but 80% of the time this happens in summer. The goal is born a year later and is protected by mare until they are weaned 11-12months later. Young stallions leave the herd and join the bachelor group until they are old enough to compete for a harem.

Zebras in the wild can live up to 20year and that’a if it’s able to survive that long....

Mwandi View Safari Lodge had a VIP visiter at their bar; a fully grown Spotted Bush Snake!! One of the employees found it underneath the counter eating an African Stripe Skink for breakfast. However, it wasn't able to swallow its prey so I was forced to catch it before it finished. It made the staff uncomfortable and they wanted to end it's life...lucky enough I was able to catch it and released it back in the wild. Too bad he lost his meal but he survived to hunt another day😉
