If you are able to travel I want to encourage you to do so! Save up some money and GO!

Once you are stepping outside your comfort zone the journey will change you! There’s a quote which I absolutely love by Ibn Battuta “Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”

Story behind this photo: Woke up early morning and took a scooter ride to Sanur Jetty to catch a ferry to Nusa Penida.

After arriving at the pier thousands of scooters was already parked waiting to board the ferry so to find a parking there was chaotic let alone you need to remember your spot amongst all the others 🤦🏽‍♀️

Nusa Penida is a relatively undeveloped island south-east of mainland Bali yet it hosts some of the most photogenic sights in Bali.

Best thing is you can visit all 3 sights in just one day Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach.

If you do visit Bali just remember your sunscreen as I came back roasted 😞

Basic protective measures against the new coronavirus. Take care of your health and protect others by doing the following:

🦠 Wash your hands frequently

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

🦠 Maintain social distancing

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

🦠 Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

🦠 Practice respiratory hygiene

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

Travelling is known to change you. Surrounding yourself with different cultures, different people and different outlooks on life are bound to change all of us a bit. That’s one of the greatest things about travelling as a whole – apart from tasting the different cuisines of course! You are on a constant learning curve as you venture from the US to Europe to Asia and so forth. It can be a scary thing at times, especially if you don’t understand the language. Ultimately, however, travelling will be the best thing you’ve ever done for yourself. That’s because travel broadens our minds and expands on our worldly wisdom.

Many people travel for the sole purpose of personal growth. But you should also know that travel isn’t all glory...there are ups and downs to it just like everything else in the world. You are going to deal with challenges along the way, but that’s part of the whole experience.

For the most part, travelling is the most fun and rewarding experience we’ll ever have. It doesn’t matter where you go exactly. It just matters that you’re leaving your hometown and exploring other countries and cultures.

The Indonesian island of Bali has long been a popular travel destination, known for its beautiful beaches, great food and incredibly welcoming people.

Another big Bali draw is the sunsets, and the plethora of stunning locations to watch them from. No trip to the island is complete without gazing (preferably with a cocktail or Bintang in hand!) from a beach, cliff or jungle as the sun disappears into a colourful haze.

Tegalalang Rice Terrace

An agricultural icon on the cliffs of Tegalalang Village north of Ubud. It’s a very popular tourist hotspot in Bali and a must-see!

Without a doubt, the Tegalalang Rice Terrace are one of the most beautiful and greenest place I visited in Bali.

It forms the three most splendid terraced landscapes in Ubud's shared region, with the others being in the villages of Pejeng and Campuhan and offers a scenic outlook that spreads down before you and away to the rice paddies on the slopes across the valley.

Visit to Tegalalang rice terrace are subject to an entrance fee of 15,000 IDR (R16) per person and the ticket can be bought at the ticket counter which located in the main street just before the rice terraces viewpoint.

My Bali adventure, where to begin? The Bali experience is something that can’t be explained, it’s a cultural and spiritual journey that needs to be experienced in order to be understood. Bali is called “The Island of The Gods,” and appropriately so.

This trip, I was lucky enough to experience some of the most beautiful locations and resorts the island has to offer, beginning in Ubud, Seminyak then to Canggu and a day to Nusa Penida. Im used to swimming in crystal blue waters like Half Moon Cay in the Caribbean so the beaches I was visiting didn’t impress me much as I’m so used to seeing the utmost beautiful beaches.

The thing I love most about Bali is that it offers something for everyone, amazing wave breaks, unique shopping, some of the most beautiful temples, views and fantastic restaurants.

I feel as though Bali is also a reminder of how important kindness and generosity are: the locals are so lovely and cheerful that it would be hard to have a bad day, someone was always putting a smile on my face.

Canang Sari - Floral Offerings along the road in Bali

Bali is a little anomaly in the middle of Indonesia, the daily nature-based worship of Balinese Hinduism is a stark contrast to religious practices in the rest of this majority-Muslim country.

Before heading to Bali my cousin gave me a tip to not step on the flower decoration that has been placed along side the road.

1st Day arriving in Ubud walking around I saw several of these beautiful/colorful offerings everywhere in-front of houses, shops, stairways, temples and even inside shuttles. A thin stick of still-burning incense surrounded by colourful flower petals and food.

The canang sari looks like a woven basket tucked with a decorative collection of brightly coloured items that may appear to have been placed at random. However, placement is deliberate and meaningful.
Every piece in an arrangement is selected for what it symbolizes, or which specific Hindu god it represents. For example, the three major Hindu Gods known as the Trimurtri are often represented in the canang sari by a white lime for Shiva, a red betel nut for Vishnu, and a green Gambier plant for Brahma. The colour and placement of the flowers also bears significance; white petals to the east representing the god Iswara, red petals to the south for Brahma, yellow flowers to the west for Mahadeva, and blue or green ones to the north for Vishnu.

Every morning, a family will create about 20 to 50 small flower offerings to place around their house and in their family temple to appease the gods and to bless their homes and cars. Along the streets you will find these offerings all over the sidewalk, so try your best not to step or push them as that is very offensive to the Balinese and their gods.

Women menstruating may not enter a Temple

Today while visiting the Royal Temple in Bali I was quite startled to find a sign outside of the temple restricting women from entering if menstruating.

While no one at the gate or even when purchasing your ticket to enter was questioning woman regarding their menstruating status. I had to ask my driver why this was the case... as per Gusti when a Balinese woman menstruates, she is said to be “Dirty”. From that moment on, and during the whole length of her period, she has to abide by prohibitions and obligations, which are the many reminders of her “impurity.” She is barred in particular from all religious tasks and duties. Instead of going to the temple or participating in the collective preparation of offerings, she must remain at home and for woman who just gave birth they need to wait at least 3 months before entering the Temple.

He furthermore explained that its considered disrespectful to enter a temple whilst menstruating. As foreigners coming to visit I think it’s just fair we all respect their culture.

Cozumel Mexico 🇲🇽

Cozumel is Mexico’s island paradise situated in the dazzling blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Situated off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula just south of Cancun, Cozumel is just a 6 kilometre boat ride from the mainland and the resort town of Playa Del Carmen.

Combining the best of both worlds, Cozumel, Mexico, brings together the cultures, cuisines and histories of both the Mexico and the Caribbean. It’s Mexico’s largest and most populated Caribbean island and the most popular cruise destination, welcoming around 4 million cruise passengers each year.

It is an island surrounded by crystal clear waters and loaded with natural beauty, from lush jungles and wetlands to palm tree lined beaches. Whether its chilling out pool side, surfing or swimming at the beach or full on adventure sports, this is a place where you’re free to do as little or as much as you want - a great island resort which can easily fulfil anyone’s dream holiday.

✨ Getting to Cozumel

From Cancun: There are direct flights available from Cancun International airport to Cozumel island. The trip is just 20 minutes long and can easily be arranged with MAYAir for about R1,000.

From Playa del Carmen: It’s easy to get to Cozumel, as the ferry pier is located just a few metres from 5th Avenue. Once you reach the ferry pier downtown, you can take a 45 minutes long ferry transfer from Playa Del Carmen to tranquil Cozumel at the cost of R200 per person. Tickets can be purchased from two providers Ultramar and Waterjets, both make the crossing to Cozumel daily.

✨ Visa Requirements

South African passport holders require a visa prior to arriving in Mexico. Citizens must have a passport that is valid for 6 months upon their arrival in Mexico. However, if you have a valid, multiple entry, B1/B2 type USA visa (any nationality) you do not require a visa to enter Mexico.

For the upcoming week I’ll be writing about the Ports of Calls I was visiting with the beautiful Carnival Horizon and give you a slight idea of what the Caribbean is all about:

Curaçao 🇨🇼

When you think about the Caribbean, islands like Jamaica, the Bahamas and Cuba usually pop to mind. Those are just some of the popular islands that travellers frequently travel to every year, but there’s also the island of Curaçao that offers many options for the South African traveller.

Curaçao, a Dutch Caribbean island, is home to hidden beaches, watersport and natural sites
the destination is now filled with colorful houses and luxury beach resorts that were once Dutch colonial buildings.

South Africans do not require a visa to visit. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines offers regular flights from South Africa to the island.

8 Reasons Why You Should Visit Dubai at Least Once in Your Lifetime.

Dubai is undoubtedly one of the most unique cities in the world. For those with an untreatable case of wanderlust, this city is a traveler’s dream. Dubai has historic sights, futuristic architecture, active night life and out-of-this-world attractions.

✨ See the Desert

Before the skyscrapers and luxurious automobiles, Dubai was only sand. Although the city has long evolved from the days of Bedouin villages, the desert is still a sight to see. When visiting Dubai, go on a desert safari and eat a traditional Arabic barbecue, go dune bashing, watch belly dancing and ride camels.

✨ Cultural Diversity

Cities like New York and London are known for their cultural diversity, but Dubai takes diversity to a whole new level. Approximately 85% of Dubai’s population are expats. This brings a level of cultural interaction that is rarely seen anywhere else in the world. Traveling to Dubai is one of the greatest anthropological experiences one can have, as it is allows visitors to travel the entire world from one place.

✨ Unique Architecture

Dubai is known worldwide for its architecture. It’s hard to believe that only four decades ago, the city did not have a single building. Now, the Dubai skyline is full of unique skyscrapers designed by some of the best architects in the world. A drive down one of UAE’s main roads, Sheikh Zayed Road, will leave anyone in awe. Buildings come in all shapes, sizes and styles. Anything Dubai does, it does in style, so even the metro stations are architectural wonders.

✨ The Palm Jumeirah

For those looking for an island holiday, Dubai offers unique artificial islands. While most are still under construction, The Palm Jumeirah has been around for over a decade and offers beaches, hotels and restaurants. Inspired by Dubai’s traditional tree, this island is shaped like a massive palm tree spreading into the ocean. Even better than visiting the Palm Jumeirah is to take a helicopter tour and see it from above.

✨ Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, and making a trip to the top is a memorable experience. From the beach to the desert, the whole of Dubai can be seen from up there. The building is over 800 meters tall and has 163 floors. The Burj Khalifa is home to numerous hotels and restaurants, and is an ideal place to watch the sunset.

✨ Dubai’s Nightlife

For those who like to party, this city is all about its nightclubs and bars, open every night of the week. With some household names such as White Dubai, Blue Marlin and Cirque Le Soir, this city doesn’t take a single night off. Bars are also open every night and come in different themes and styles.

✨ Gardens in the Desert

Considering Dubai’s climate and geography, it’s hard to believe that it would have any greenery. However, the artificial gardens will leave anyone amazed. In winter, when flowers bloom, driving around Dubai will allow visitors to see colorful and impressive gardens in the middle of the city.

✨ The Gold Souk

Dubai is widely known for its amazing Gold Souk, which offers dozens of jewelry stores selling gold, silver and precious stones. Check out the world’s largest gold ring, weighing almost 64 kilograms. The gold souk is located in old Dubai, and is a real contrast to the newer side of the city.

✨ 6 Reasons You Should Travel while you’re Young ✨

1. Traveling changes the way you relate to the world.

I grew up in a tiny town. If I hadn’t had the opportunity to travel I would have a difficult time envisioning much else outside my comfortable small town bubble. When you travel to other countries and see the amazing beauty of sunsets overseas, eagles riding mountain currents, monkeys swinging through rain forests, grizzlies catching salmon in the rapids, majestic waterfalls spilling off vertical drops, and volcanoes smoking under their fiery breath, you realize the world is full of more beauty that you are capable of seeing in a lifetime. But, you still have the intense passion to try. If you don’t see this when you are younger, you have less desire to venture out when you are older and have job and family constraints in play. If I didn’t know what I was missing, I would have less of a desire to put the effort into taking the time to travel. You also develop a deeper sense of obligation to save our planet’s beauty for the coming generations. After all, you’ve seen it firsthand, and it’s worth saving!

2. Traveling changes the way you relate to others.

Unfortunately, the area I grew up in didn’t have much diversity. Everyone looked and acted basically the same. When I traveled, I learned about other cultures. Far from my hometown, I developed friendships with people who were nothing like me, but were exactly what I needed. This taught me to embrace, not fear, experiences and relationships that were outside my comfort zone. It also taught me the importance of communication skills.

3. Traveling humbles you enough to realize it’s not all about you.

The older I become, the more I realize I actually know very little about life. It seems the confidence of knowing it all is usually graced upon the young. However, the sooner that bubble bursts, the better; at least in my case. Traveling sometimes puts you in tough situations. You see that the world is so much bigger than your perspective on it. You soon realize the world doesn’t revolve around you. You learn that you really weren’t the big fish in the ocean, but just a tiny minnow in a pothole.

Now, that doesn’t mean you aren’t still important, but it does change your perspective to be more open to learning from other people and situations vs lecturing and bestowing your vast wisdom to those lucky enough to be in earshot. Traveling teaches you to let go of the perceived concept of control. You learn that it’s a big enough challenge to just control yourself, and learn to give up trying to do so for the rest of the planet.

4. Traveling empowers you to take on new challenges.

Just as traveling is humbling, it is also empowering. You realize you can do things you never thought possible. For example, I have never thought I would eat worms, dead cockroaches and noodles with everything you can possibly think of adding. I have always been surrounded by family while traveling so when I had to travel foreign countries all be myself for the first time it was scary but also exciting. Conquering this fear helped me learn that I could adapt to more than I felt I was capable of conquering. I think that’s a good thing to learn at any age, but you can apply it longer throughout your lifetime if you start early.

5. Traveling gives you empathy for global suffering.

When you travel, you learn how much you truly have that you take for granted. Many people live in poverty that is unfathomable to those who have never walked their streets and heard their stories.

6. We are never guaranteed old age, so enjoy life’s experiences now!

I think a lot of young people put off traveling because they want to be responsible, work hard, get married, have kids, and build up a life. However, I think it’s a mistake to put off traveling in exchange for the belief that you can do it when you retire and have more time. While I certainly plan to continue to travel after I retire, I also realize I am not guaranteed old age. If something happens and I don’t live to see my forties, fifties, or sixties, I will have no regrets. I have experienced the world to the best of my ability by taking every opportunity presented to me to see all of this gorgeous planet that I can. Traveling has made me the person that I am, and I’m so grateful that I have plenty of years left with this version of me to continue the adventure.
