Banasura Sagar Dam: “A dam ?!?” you might ask. But this is no regular dam. It is the largest earth dam in India and the second largest of its kind in Asia. In the dam’s reservoir there is a set of islands that were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas. The islands with the Banasura hills are in the background view. The dam has become a popular tourist destination. Speed boat ride, in particular, is an exhilarating experience & not to be missed. (100% agree)

Tiffany glass altar at Wade Memorial Chapel in Lakeview Cemetery.
The interior decor was designed and manufactured by Tiffany & Co., and Louis Comfort Tiffany personally sought out the commission. After winning the project, Tiffany traveled to Cleveland to consult with Hubbell & Benes about the decor design. Art historian Hugh F. McKean concludes that Tiffany probably designed the interior himself, as many elements of the chapel reflect those used in Tiffany's chapel for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.

The chapel features a massive stained glass window at the rear and mosaics on each side wall.

The stained glass window, titled Resurrection or Flight of the Soul, was designed by Tiffany artisan Agnes Northrop. It was exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1900 before being installed at the chapel. Tiffany's Favrile process gives his stained glass window an especially opalescent and iridescent quality and a more pastel and varied palette of colors that the usual primary palette of other stained glass windows.

Bergy bits and Growlers

Very small chunks of floating ice that rise only about 1 meter / 3 feet out of the water are called "growlers". When trapped air escapes as the iceberg melts, it sometimes makes a sound like the growl of an animal, and that's how growlers got their name.

Small icebergs, rising between 1-4 meters / 3-13 feet out of the water are called "bergy bits". These may be small icebergs in the latter stages of melting, iceberg fragments, or pieces of floebergs or hummocked ice. Bergy bits may sound cute, but they can still be dangerous to ships because they are harder to see than large icebergs.

The Iditarod National Historic Trail includes approximately 2,400 miles of primary trails and side/connecting trails between Seward and Nome, which link communities and historic sites.

The Iditarod National Historic Trail, a symbol of frontier travel and once main artery of Alaska's winter commerce, provided access to a string of mining camps, trading posts, and other settlements founded between 1880 and 1920. Congress designated the Iditarod as a National Historic Trail in 1978.

The monsoon season in Kerala is called Karkidaka Masam and is the last month in the traditional Malayalam calendar. This month is when the monsoon showers are known to be at its peak. Traditionally time was spent reading the Ramayana, drinking Karkidaka kanji and focusing on physical and spiritual well being. Close to the end of the month is when the Karkidaka Vavu Bali (rituals dedicated to dead ancestors and relatives were performed). For visitors to Kerala this is a great time to focus on your health and well being with Ayurvedic diet and massages alongside relaxing houseboat rides along the waterways.

Now as we head into fall, it starts to get cooler and the leaves change colors, I can’t think of anything better than “Adda” with some friends. “Adda” is Bengali for a conversation/ philosophical discussion/ gathering in a place with coffee. The Flower Market of Kolkata…. like all traditional marketplaces in Kolkata it has grown in an entirely organic fashion over the past several decades. Located on the ghats along the bank of the river Hooghly it allowed the farmers to bring their flowers down the river and sell it to merchants in the city. The market is also so well organized with a section for marigolds, jasmines, roses, lotuses and so on.

The Howrah Bridge …. one of the busiest cantilever bridges in the world. Connecting the cities of Kolkata (Calcutta) and Howrah across the river Hoogly. The ghats make for a peaceful viewpoint of this busy landmark. This bridge is also called the “New Howrah Bridge” since it replaced the original pontoon bridge that was situated here back in 1874. The “American Chopsuey” - A dish rarely found in America in this form but a much loved staple in every Indo-Chinese restaurant in the Indian subcontinent. In the US “American chopsuey” now refers to American goulash, an Italian american dish with elbow pasta, meat and veggies. In the Indian subcontinent, “American chopsuey” is a dish with crispy fried noodles, mixed meats and vegetables with a large egg on the top and a sweet-spicy sauce base. Nature needs no filters…. Legend has it that the mid 19th century Mormon pioneers making their way West came across this tree with spiking branches raised up to the sky and it reminded them of the biblical story of Joshua who led the Israelite tribes through the desert.
