Happy Canada Day!! 🍁

Today, we celebrated Canada's 157th with a trip into Parksville.

Our day started with a fun round of 18 holes at⛳ Paradise Fun Park. Then, we headed to the Boardwalk for some delicious Coastal Cones Beachfront Ice Cream🍦 Finally, we wrapped up our adventure with a serene walk along the tranquil shores of .

What a perfect way to enjoy this special day!

Biking in the South Cowichan Valley/Shawinigan Lake area.
Kinsol Trestle to the Glenora Trails Head Park.
32km total (16km each way)
Novice rider - 2.5hrs

Starting at the Kinsol Trestle Parking Lot, picnicking at the Glenora Trails Head Park, and then returning via the same route.

There is a slight decline going from the Kinsol Trestle to the Park, so the way back is much more strenuous, especially in certain sections, and took longer.

This is a well maintained and groomed trail open to pedestrians, cyclists, dogs (on leash) and equestrians.
The Kinsol trestle is an incredible historical icon, and there are plenty of info booths on site detailing the history, construction, renovations, and maintenance of this landmark.
The Glenora Trails Head Park is the perfect turnaround point as you can stop for a picnic and a break. There is a large bathroom facility, lots of picnic tables, both undercover and open and some with BBQ facilities, and an exciting kids playground with a zipline.

For an extra adventure there are many trails meeting at the Park, and back on the Galloping Goose North another, but much smaller, trestle just a little ride away.

East Sooke Regional Park – The Coast Trail from Aylard Farm to Beechey Head.
March 30, 2022

Ayland Farm is an off leash Dog Area – Expect lots of off leash dogs.
Parking - Arrived at Aylard Farm at about 1pm. It was a decent enough day - a couple of raindrops and cold wind, expected weather in March/April. The parking lot was busy and although a spot was easy enough to find this might not be as simple during the busier summer months. There seemed to be overflow parking closed for the off season and road parking outside the park gates would also be a reasonable option.

Creyke Pt. Trail - This trail is a short 5-10 min walk to the staircase leading down to the beach. This is an excellent beach for dog owners. If your dog has unreliable recall or impolite I would recommend keeping them on their leash as there are no boundary gates – just a lovely trail that allows off leash dogs. We wanted to picnic so we turned right at the beach and walked until there was a large rock. Climbing over this was easy enough and the other side had no dogs that would pester us for a taste.

The Coast Trail – Adventure at its finest. This trail is extremely rugged and incredibly fun. Ankle support boots are recommended. There are rocky steps to clamber over, branches to duck under, and roots ready to trip an ignorant step. It`s not always easy to tell where the trail is leading and so BC Parks have placed helpful yellow diamonds along the trail with directional arrows. Every trail intersection has a signpost so navigation is easy. There are many points throughout that feature incredible ocean views and are excellent photo ops.

The Petroglyphs - 45 mins on Coast Trail – Well preserved carvings from the Coast Salish People.
Beechey Head – 1.5hrs on Coast Trail. In order to reach the Treaty Reference Mark there is a slight climb. Rewarded at the top with a gorgeous ocean view and an historical landmark.

The Inland Trail – 45min back to Aylard Farm. Well maintained and much easier than the Coast Trail. Incredible geology with ginormous boulders either side of the trail.

Nearby Points of Interest

East Sooke Grocer – Excellent place to grab lunch or picnic food. Some fresh Deli options, fresh coffee, unique potato chip flavours, and a small gift shop.
