# 132 Vetas & Páramo de Santurbán, Colombia

🇮🇹 A 3350 m di altitudine, Vetas è il comune più alto di tutta la Colombia, incrostato nella Cordillera Oriental dietro al páramo de Santurbán.

Il mio terzo páramo, un ecosistema super speciale che è prima fonte d'acqua potabile dell'intera nazione! In post precedenti trovi un sacco di informazioni sull'ecosistema più bello del mondo (dopo quello marino in ogni sua forma).

Vetas è un paesino piccolo e freddo, di lunga tradizione mineraria, e con un museo di cianfrusaglie quotidiane per lo più antiche nel cortile interno di una casa colonica, dove spicca un muro di bambole inquietanti che mi farà ve**re gli incubi. Non so come fanno i cuccioli d'uomo a giocare con cose del genere...

🇨🇦 With its 3350 m of altitude, Vetas is the highest town in Colombia, nestled in the Cordillera Oriental behind the Páramo de Santurbán.

My third páramo , an extra-special ecosystem that's the main water resource of the whole country. In previous posts, you'll find lots of info about the second most beautiful ecosystem in the world (after the ocean one in all its shapes and forms).

Vetas is a little cold town with a long mining history. One of the highlights for us was its local museum, full of mainly vintage stuff of all kinds in the courtyard of a colonial house. The wall filled with creepy dolls is going to give me nightmares for sure. I don't know how human cubs enjoy interacting with those things...

# 130 Pueblos de Santander (part 1) 🇨🇴

#126 Camino de Lengerke

🇮🇹 100 km in 3 days in the scorching heat and under the rain, in the dark and under the midday sun. In the forest, through the canyon, over bridges, among fossils. These caminos de herradura were first opened by the Guane, the indigenous people of the region, and then modernized by Geo von Lengerke, a German engineer who spent most of his adult life here. It’s painful for the paws and hard on the mind, but the experience is incredible.

🇨🇦 100 km in 3 giorni sotto il sole cocente di mezzogiorno e sotto la pioggia, al buio e senza ombra. Nella foresta, attraverso un canyon, su e giù dai ponti, tra i fossili. Questi caminos de herradura sono stati aperti in origine dagli indigeni Guane per spostarsi e spostare mercanzia, poi dai colonizzatori e poi è arrivato il simpatico Geo von Lengerke con i suoi capelli biondi dalla Germania che li ha modernizzati e gli ha dato il nome. La camminata è dolorosa per le zampe e le ginocchia (per chi le ha) e impegnativa per la mente, ma l’esperienza vale la disperazione da vesciche del secondo giorno.

# 125 Suaita + San José de Suaita, Santander, Colombia

🇮🇹 Suaita, una cittadina gialla con un mercato vivace, e San José de Suaita, un posto silenzioso e semi-deserto dove non abbiamo trovato nemmeno un regolare caffè mattutino.
Bonus: la cascata Los Caballeros.
Accesso: per lo più asfaltato, ma le mucche hanno la precedenza, quindi si va a passo lento. 😉

🇨🇦 Suaita - a yellow town with a lively market - and San José de Suaita - a quiet and half empty place where we couldn't even get a morning coffee. Plus, the Los Caballeros waterfall, which is good to visit early in the morning.
Easy access, but cows have the right of way, so don't expect neck-breaking speeds. 😉

# 119 Bogotá

🇮🇹 A rischio di risultare impopolare, dirò che in generale non amo molto Bogotá.

Bogotà è un mostro tentacolare e disordinato che fagocita tutto ciò che ha intorno, c'è sempre troppa gente, troppo rumore, troppo tutto. Allo stesso tempo, però, ha anche quella vivacità culturale, quell'arguzia e dinamicità di pensiero che a volte mancano in altri spazi. Bogotá è un caos che però sa regalare emozioni, forse perché per la maggior parte ho bei ricordi legati a umanità a cui voglio bene.

Bogotá - dove l'umana non entrerebbe in macchina neanche se la pagassero - è la città di partenze e arrivi, di saluti con le lacrime agli occhi e di un "sono a casa". Bogotá è dolce-amara, anche se comunque non ci vivrei mai.

Pro tip forse poco pro: se Bogotá è il primo posto che visiti in Colombia, fatti un favore e fai il walking tour gratuito del centro con le guide dai cappelli rossi: è un condensato di info storiche, geografiche e culturali di ciò che poi andrai a vedere da altre parti. E prova il gelato al mambe accanto al centro culturale messicano ;)

🇨🇦 This may be a bit of an unpopular opinion, but I don't love Bogotá.

Bogota is a tentacular and messy monster that devours everything in its wake. There's always too much noise, too many people, too much of everything. At the same time, however, it also boosts that cultural vibrance, that wit and dynamism that sometimes other spaces lack.

Bogotá is total chaos, but it's also capable of stirring up feelings, maybe because I have good memories of some of my favourite humans here.

Bogotá - where my human would never ever drive - is a city of departures and arrivals, of tear-eyed goodbyes and "i'm-home" kind of welcomes. Bogotá is bittersweet, even though I'd never live there.

Pro tip: if Bogotá is the first place you visit in Colombia, do yourself a favour and go on a free walking tour in the city centre with the red hat city guides: it's a great historical and cultural overview that will put some things into context when you move to other destinations. And try the mambe-flavoured ice-cream next to the Mexican cultural centre 😉

# 117 Pueblos de Boyacá, Colombia

🇮🇹 Il dipartimento di Boyacà non è solo Villa de Leyva, ma questo i turisti superficiali non lo sanno.
Ti svelo qualche segreto:
- Nobsa: celebre per la produzione artigianale di ruanas (poncho di lana o cotone o mix). Entrando nei negozi di ruanas, spesso si può assistere alla lavorazione dal vivo e osservare da vicino il telaio tradizionale. Io ho comprato qui la ruana adattata alle mie notevoli dimensioni e ne vado orgogliosissima!
- Tibasosa: famosa per il suo liquore tradizionale al fico o al caffè, pericolosamente dolce.
- Monguí: famosa per il paramo che ha accanto, un ecosistema meraviglioso, e per la produzione di palloni in cuoio. Si può visitare una fabbrica di palloni.
- Aquitania è famosa per la cipolla verde lunga, Iza per le sue terme e la laguna di Tota per essere la seconda più alta dell'America latina dopo l'unico e inimitabile lago Titicaca.
- A Duitama c'è il Pueblito boyacense, una specie di versione in miniatura dei villaggi caratteristici di Boyacá e che ne rappresenta cultura e tradizioni
- Paipa ha delle terme, un proprio formaggio e il caratteristico abbinamento culinario di almojabana, formaggio e masato.

🇨🇦 The department of Boyacá is not just Villa de Leyva, but superficial tourists don't know that.
So here you have some secrets:
- Nobsa: known for their hand-made ruanas (like wool or cotton ponchos). Inside the shops, you can often see artesans at work on the traditional loom. I bought my ruana here, tailored to by significant dimensions, and I'm really proud of it.
- Tibasosa: known for its traditional fig-flavoured liquor: it's dangerously sweet, so be careful.
- Monguí: known for the beautiful páramo and the hand-made production of footballs.
- Aquitania is onion territory, Iza has thermal baths and the Tota lake is the second highest in Latin America after the one and only Titicaca lake.
- Duitama has the pueblito boyacense, a miniature version of the aforementioned real villages of Boyacá.
- Paipa is thermal territory and produces its own cheese, that has to be eaten with almojabanas and masato.

# 115 Villa de Leyva, Boyacá

🇮🇹 Alle 6 di mattina la piazza di Villa de Leyva è il territorio degli spazzini che con una pazienza certosina fanno sparire le tracce dell'umanità (o disumanità) del giorno precedente. Armati di cancellino, eliminano un intreccio di storie e lasciano la lavagna bianca per la nuova alba. La piazza della città sembra grandissima perché è vuota: niente fronzoli in mezzo, solo il nulla da riempire con la propria presenza.

Le strade intorno sembrano uscite da cartoline: la via degli artigiani, quella pedonale, quella polverosa dietro la stazione degli autobus, quella del panificio francese, quella del mercato in ristrutturazione, quella che sembra di essere in Alto Adige, quella con le statue, quella dove i lampioni sono difettosi.

A Villa de Leyva c'era l'oceano, quindi è piena di fossili! E c'è un museo di dinosauri e cetacei preistorici, con un laboratorio paleontologico annesso. E poi c'è il solito cristo sul cucuzzolo della montagna insieme a una tavola di Aslan, da cui si vede l'intera valle e il santuario di flora e fauna dietro.

🇨🇦 At 6am, Villa de Leyva's main square is street cleaners' territory. With a great deal of patience, they delete the previous day's human (or inhuman) traces. They erase the weaving of stories and leave a clean slate for a new dawn. The main square looks gigantic because it's empty: no frills, only the void to fill with your presence.

The streets around look like postcards: the artisans' street, the pedestrian one, the dusty one behind the bus station, the French bakery one, the market one, the one with the statues, the flickering lamp posts' one.

Once upon a time, Villa de Leyva was in the middle of the ocean, so nowadays it's full of fossils. There's a dinosaur and prehistoric marine creatures museum, with a paleontology lab attached, where scientists fix bones. And then there's the usual Christ on the mountain top, together with an Aslan's table, from which you can see the whole valley below and the flora and fauna sanctuary behind.

# 114 Ciudad Perdida de Falan 🇮🇹 Falan è un segreto che poche persone conoscono... Qui vi sono i resti della miniera d'oro e d'argento di Santa Ana e dell'annessa cittadella dei conquistatori spagnoli qui a rubare allegramente risorse. Nei 400 anni del suo abbandono, la natura si è ripresa ciò che era suo e ora la Ciudad Perdida è un percorso storico ed ecologico ameno e silenzioso che passa per fiumi, cascate, magazzini ricoperti d'edera, tunnel bui e l'occasionale mucca che poco cerimoniosamente blocca il passaggio. Io e l'umana eravamo completamente sole per tutta la durata del percorso e siamo riuscite anche a farci la doccia della giornata in una delle piscine naturali della riserva (e ti assicuro che lei aveva bisogno urgente di una doccia!) 🐢🐢🐢 🇨🇦 Falan is a secret that few know about... Here there are the rests of the gold and silver mines of Santa Ana and, of course, the annexed Spanish citadel where exploiters stole resources not meant for them. Since being abandoned, some 400 years ago, nature reclaimed what's hers and now this Lost City is an historical and ecological path - calm and quiet - that crosses rivers, waterfalls, ivy-covered warehouses, dark tunnels and the random cow blocking nonchalantly the way. The human and I were completely alone for the whole visit. We even managed to shower in one of the natural pools of the reserve (and heaven knows she needed a shower!) Gracias @ciudadperdidafalan 🐢💙
