When you know, you know! There are about 100 people on this beach in this frame. Where? Hiding in the shade because the coast is sweltering!

Visit the beach… but then retreat to the mountains where no AC is needed, the temp is perfect, and the evenings can actually get a little chilly

Morning Merlin sightings from our Rancho. My favorite time of the day is a morning cup of coffee ☕️ listening to all the bird songs surrounding me… and the occasional Howler Monkey family 🙉. In 30 minutes, these are all the different birds singing together in our treetop canopy.

It’s the feeling that I want to bottle up and pass out for free. Pure peace and tranquillity while sitting amongst the absolute perfect temperature and a slight warm breeze hitting your face. The jungle is pure magic 🪄

But have you ever slept behind a waterfall in a cave? Super unique experience!

Spend 1 or 2 nights hiking the rainforest in Costa Rica and sleep in a cave with a cook! We hiked to different waterfalls to refresh in and took a night hike to try and spot the nightlife (no luck 🍀). The closest that we got were the howler monkeys in the morning letting us know that the coffee was ready.

I’ve now rafted the white waters of 3 of the 4 rivers in our area. Of the 3, this is my personal favorite for the scenery (looks like Jurassic Park) and the most time out on the water (Naranjo for the more exhilarating rapids).

I ❤️ the Guabo because it runs into the Baru river making the last 30 minutes (of 3 hours) a relaxing float ending at the river mouth at the Pacific Ocean in Dominical. So no long car ride after the float. You nearly float right on up to the restaurants for lunch.

I love that this company doesn’t hassle you for money to buy the pics since there’s no way for you to take your camera. The owner goes along in his kayak to get ahead of your raft to take photos of you and then airdrops them to you during lunch.

The ultimate class V will be done during the dry season.

Now this is a MUST! Cooking class with Mama Sandra at her restaurant (or our house) to learn the tips and tricks of the Costa Rican dishes 😋

We learned how to make (all with fresh veggies and herbs from their property)

1. Gallo Pinto
2. Plantains
3. Empanadas from scratch with a secret
4. Tortillas from scratch
5. Arroz con leche (rice pudding)
6. Omelets

If visiting a bee 🐝 farm and learning more about the bees has been on your some day list, you can check it off your list in Costa Rica- 1.15 hrs from our house. 10/10 ⭐️ experience.

Michael teaches you first about the bees, why they are in danger, what all they produce (not just honey), the different types, why some are more aggressive (of course mankind played a role), and why the males die a happy man 😉 in their short 45 day lifespan.

He was informative in a way that kept me following along the entire way, laughing, and jaw dropping with things I had know idea about.

Then, he takes you on a walk through his jungle to visit his hives and collect a honeycomb for desert after his lovely wife prepares you a yummy Casado

9am - 12:30pm ish, perfect tour for the rainy season to fit in before the afternoon rain (AKA a jungle bubble bath with a good book)

You ever hear of Royal Jelly? There’s 1 queen 🐝 in the colony, the rest are drone’s, and worker bees. Check this out.

Drones and worker bees lifespan is 45 days. They produce Royal Jelly and feed it to the queen bee. Guess how long the queen bee lives?

Up to 7 years. Something to this superfood hype 🤔

Our house is 4 hours from the international airport. Unless you opt for a domestic flight getting you 1 hour from our house, your drive is 4 hours… exotic locations aren’t exotic if it were easy to reach 🙌

On this trip, I decided to break up the drive and stay a night at the 1/2 way point in the cloud forest. We missed our coffee farm tour and time at this incredible hotel (8 hour flight delay), but check out the activities available in this area, and FOR SURE check out this private, tranquil room we had in the cloud forest… heaven!

The Resplendent Quetzal bird is hard to find. The best place is in Costa Rica, and 1.5 hours from our place in the Cloud Forest. Because the 5-8am hour is when they can be seen, this makes a good stop off from or to the airport for a 1 or 2 night stay. We got to see the male (more colorful with long tail), the female (no long tail and less colorful), and a juvenile male.

To explore the picturesque Sevegre River, we opted to do so horseback, which included about 6 river crossings.

We booked only 1 night here, but immediately regretted this the instant we walked into our room 😥 and saw the serenity doing nothing here would bring… so, I’ll be doing this again next time. Our room was a walk through “the woods” reaching a very private glass bungalow to view all nature all the time, with a jetted tub, shower amongst the trees, heated flooring, a fire feature on the wall, and a massive deck for morning yoga! It’s heated with air condition, but the temp was perfect without either.

When the sun goes down and you know this day is gone forever, what did you receive?

In the jungle, the answer is usually fulfillment and tranquility.

Sitting here for the first hour (or two) of my day will never get old. If I could bottle the feeling to give to everyone for free, I would.

We spent 3 weeks here and finally made ourselves go to the beach.

What a Sunday can look like for you.

- Check out one of the beaches in the morning
- When it gets too hot, go and soak in one of the waterfalls to cool off. Everyone thinks beach, beach… but the high surf allows you to get in about mid thigh high. The waterfalls and rivers are where it’s at here 💎
- Schedule an early evening massage under the Rancho
- Grab your favorite beverage to watch the sunset (during the Costa Rica summer)

The music during my massage made me giggle… sounds of the jungle. But the real jungle was louder. With the birds and the rain, I could barely hear the music playing 🙌

Look at these little freeloaders. They must’ve smelled Ted Zinselmeier Sunday breakfast and showed up with no reservation, came on in to make themselves a plate, enjoyed the view, used the pool, took a 💩 on our patio, and then just left with no goodbye.

11 out of 10 experience! I’m trying to remember the last day in life that I smiled 8 hours straight with pure happiness and content.

Up the mountains another 1.40 hours from us is one unique and mystical experience that I will never forget and thoroughly enjoyed. I had zero preconceived notions and no idea what to expect.

We met our ATV guides for a typical Costa Rican breakfast at a home of a local family. From there, we rode ATV’s about 2 hours through and on the ridge of the Telamanca Mountains (which I think is actually what heaven looks like being above the clouds) overlooking the Chirripo National Park.

Ohhh that ride! We were on Mothet Nature’s good list today- she gave us sunshine in the cloud forest and no rain! That was just the icing on top of the adventure cake. I’m not sure a first time ATV’er would feel super tranquilo, but those with an adventure heart would feel like you are at recess. We aren’t pros, have ridden maybe 10 times all over the world, and felt a thrill, while still confident and safe on the path… but those VIEWS! No picture can possibly capture what those views do to your soul. If the chapel were closed and we had to turn around, still 11/10 ⭐️ yelp review!

Now, when you arrive to the Chapel In The Clouds, throw your own judgements out the window and enjoy peaking into the window of another man’s mind and his idea of his life sanctuary. I need others to experience this to talk about your insights and takeaways. I feel like everyone will leave having been on a different journey and a completely different experience and takeaway, I’m sure polarizing. Whether you agree or disagree, who cares… just spend the time experiencing the mind of someone else and see what you deduce.

Lastly, we had lunch in a village of only 39 down in the valley with a view that actually dropped my jaw.

The Sevegre river rafting is for the first timers in white water rafting to get your feet wet. It’s relatively calm with some class II & III (felt like I and II to me), but beautiful scenery with a nice waterfall stop.

This tour began in Dominical with transfers through the rural community of El Silencio where we stopped off for a yummy empanada and an introduction of some fruit plants here in Costa Rica by a local farmer. Bring Colones for the empanada’s (1,000)

Next we spent 2.5 hours on the river followed by a typical Costa Rican lunch back in Dominical across from the beach where the Scarlet Macaws now are along with a sloth who has been hanging out for a few months in one particular tree outside of the restaurant

12/05/2023

I learned so much here on a tour of the sanctuary. They have emergency services with a vet on call for injuries animals. We aren’t able to see that side of it so that they can limit the amount of human interaction with those animals to give them the highest chance of being released back into the wild.

Human interaction and feeding, particularly, causes the animals to rely on humans for food and they forget or stop foraging for food on their own. When they stop foraging on their own, they can’t be returned to the wild and end up in a sanctuary for the remainder of their life.

The sanctuary is what you get to tour. I know we all come to the most biodiverse place on earth to see the animals in the wild, but visiting a sanctuary learning about the animals and hearing the stories of what landed these animals here is incredible. Then, if you want to see these particular animals in the wild, the tour guide will tell you the best spots.

The stories really could be a realty TV show.

The normal entry ticket here would be injuries from being hit by a car, electrical injuries, etc

Then you have the monkeys chained up by their necks for 20 years or the baby sloth that was holding on to her mama when someone murdered the mama, or the baby croc that got loose in the city, etc, etc.

End the 1.5 tour with lunch and a smoothie overlooking the coast ~ gorgeous views up here

Never has the 4:45am hour been so joyful! Here’s what Merlin heard all before 5:45am (all pics from the Merlin app). These are just what I heard while roasting my feet having a cup of coffee listening to this real life Disney movie.

I checked the Costa Rica Birds book to make sure all heard from the app are actually here, and Merlin hasn’t been wrong yet. There are some birds it doesn’t recognize the sounds of though.

Now that I have an idea of what is here and I’m hearing, I’ll grab a scope and try spotting them

For those wanting to experience an easy rainforest experience with waterfalls and no crowds, this is only 20 minutes from our house.

We went on a private tour with the owners today to experience this ourselves first.

We started out exploring the jungle and valley views on their custom made monster truck before setting off on their private trails leading to 2 waterfalls and pristine swimming holes.

We then hopped on the monster truck to reach the top of the mountain to overlook the gorgeous coast of Dominicalito where they served us some coconut 🥥.

Lastly, we drove down to the 3rd waterfall for another swim before eating a delicious homemade typical Costa Rican lunch.

You can opt to add on a chef prepared meal and a bottle of wine and spend your time at the waterfall for a romantic escape, have a photoshoot, get married, etc.

Cesar, his wife Carolina, and their daughter made this a great day ❤️

Since the howler’s woke me up at bird watching time in the morning, Merlin listened to the songs and calls and captured all of these birds all before 7am 🦅.
