Live pictures from today! Welp, it's February 6th and it looks like winter has officially started 😂 No worries though, better late than never. And this storm isn't over yet! We're still projected to get another 2 to 3 ft even after this!
We're looking forward to sledding & snowboarding in the soft powder, games around the fireplace, warm spa in the snow, hot chocolate, cozy blankets The snowfall through the windows!

In the back trails of the Happy Fox Retreat, there's a tree swing hidden in the forest!
We recommend grabbing your best hiking boots and going all Indiana Jones to find it.

Bluff Lake is one of our favorite stops when we visit Big Bear! It's just a 25 min drive from the Retreat. You'll need a 4x4 to get there. You can hike around the lake, explore the meadow, check out an old cabin too. You might spot some wildlife on your hike too!

Summer is now in full bloom at the Happy Fox Retreat! We planted these flowers only a few weeks back and with a little water and sun they've been blooming like crazy! The colors are absolutely beautiful.
While we get ready for a busy summer, it's interesting to note - most places in SoCal this week expect hot temps in the '90s, but Big Bear is predicted to have a cool 75° even in the hottest part of the day. Why you may ask? Due to the higher elevation, the air is thinner - and so weather in the mountains is always about 15-20° cooler.
So, if it gets too hot down the hill, we always recommend a ride up to the mountains!

Do you enjoy the planning or when it's finished?
It took some time to configure the kitchen that the Retreat has now. These are some of the first computer mockups.
Planning a full kitchen remodel seemed daunting... but thankfully there are free planning tools online to help!
Measuring the space was the first step. Then accounting for all doors and windows and pinking a color scheme
We decided to use pine cabinets to keep the cabin feel and white subway tile to add a touch of modern.

The previous owners had some lovely, green plastic chairs /orange table that was ready to snap, crackle pop on contact! Needless to say it had to go!
We replaced it with this vintage rattan coffee table, solid blue and natural wood chairs along with some classic Happy Fox decor.
Now our guests are sippin' drinks🍹 & checking out the towering trees 🌲 in style 😎.

From time to time we get asked how did we come up with the name The Happy Fox Retreat?
Interesting Story, and we're glad to share.
Back in the 1890's Fox farms used to be big business in Big Bear lake.. They did the dirty deed of killing poor foxes for their soft fur.
It was an evil, yet very profitable business that continued on all the way into the great depression.
Between stiff competition in neighboring countries and seeing how the fox population was starting to dwindle - finally in the 1930s the fox farm business came to a close in Big Bear Lake.
On the Bristlecone trail hike near the retreat, there's a small sign that talks about the history of the fox farms. After reading it - My wife and I thought - there must be so many foxes now, just Happy, Free, running around the forest & just enjoying their life.
That was our AHA moment, and that's when we thought of the name.
And so we like to think of the Retreat as a get away for all the foxes in Big Bear Lake that now get to enjoy their life. We dedicated our cabin to all the Happy Foxes out there.
On further note, we too are a happy family we want others to enjoy happiness & peace with a place away from it all when you come stay with us. Hence the name "retreat".
So the next time you're at the Retreat, think of a Happy Fox! 😊🦊
This is our favorite siesta spot! 💤😴
Many experts believe humans need two periods of sleep each day: a long uninterrupted sleep at night and a much shorter one during the day aka a nap.
Most other mammals take a nap, humans try to make it through every day without a nap. (unless you're under 5) 😉
Later in the day energy levels and productivity tend to drop. During this part of the day, it can be hard to pay attention and think clearly.
A short nap can often restore and refresh us!

When we first saw this space, we knew we wanted to brighten it up with pops of color, but still staying true to the raw wood and rustic cabin feel. But also we wanted a feeling of modern, fresh and clean. We feel we met a fine balance here. Your thoughts?

The trees in the village are putting on a show! The village is a unique set of restaurants and shops. You're sure to find a treasure or two! Just 2.9 miles from the Retreat.

Here are some wildflowers you might be able to see in Big Bear Lake in late spring! 🏵🌸🌻🌼🌷
1. Fireweed - can be found near highways and mountains, also grows in burned areas
2. Indian Paint Brush - usually found in wet lands.
3. Yarrow - found in meadowsand used in medicines.
4. Lemon Lily - prefers wetlands and is really rare!
5. Lupine - named after a wolfand found above 4k elevation.
