Lantau Island's most Famous Hike: Lantau Peak(鳳凰山)
Route : Pak Kung Au(伯公坳) - Lantau Peak(鳳凰山) - Tsam Chai Au(斬柴坳) - Nyong Ping(昂坪)
Lantau Peak(鳳凰山) is the second highest peak in Hong Kong, where the highest belongs to Tai Mo Shan. With its altitude of 934 metres above sea level, one can have a nice view of the mountains that surrounds it, if the weather permits.
Most people starts their hike from Pak Kung Au(伯公坳), which is the highest point of Tung Chung Road, the road that connects Tung Chung to the south of Lantau. Pak Kung Au can be easily reached by bus from Tung Chung. At above 350 metres, the trail starts here towards Lantau Peak, 3.5km away. In other words, one has to ascend at least 600 metres in that 3.5 kilometers in order to reach the top. The scenery along the hike is beautiful, with views of the high mountains of Lantau, and at some points, Tung Chung town as well.
While the hike is not particularly difficult , it is definitely strenuous and requires a certain level of energy and experience, as 3000 steps of stairways begin right at the starting point, all the way until the peak. While there are a few smooth sections in between, and one can take a bit of rest during the climb. However, this hike is still guaranteed to be a tough one.
The view on top is beautiful, to say the least, and is a famous place for good photography, particularly during sunset and sunrise. But to have good weather is also a matter of chance, as it is hard to say being at this altitude. Nevertheless, many hikers see reaching the summit as an achievement in itself.
The hike downhill towards Nyong Ping, is equally challenging, as hiking down 500 meters towards Nyong Ping (at about 450 meters.), which is merely 1km away, is a sharp descend through thousands of stairways. However, the trail does ends here and one can enjoy a small snack before taking a bus back to Tung Chung town.
