There is something special about floating down in the drift boats and taking in the beautiful scenery that the Skagit has to offer. Can you spot the eagle in the trees?

We are amazed everyday by these birds while we are on our trips. It is not just our job to guide you down the river, but it’s also our job to learn as much as we can about these majestic birds. Did you know that they have incredible eyesight? Their eyes are roughly the same size as human eyes, but they have two centers of focus per eye, allowing them to see both forward and to the side simultaneously.

Plus, while humans have three types of color receptors in their eyes, allowing us to see a spectrum of colors, eagles have four types of receptors. This extra receptor allows them to see ultraviolet light, which is invisible to the human eye.

We are often asked how the juvenile bald eagles are larger than the adult eagles that we see on our trips. Juveniles typically appear larger than their parents when they first fledge due to the developmental stages that they’re in. When they leave the nest (fledge), they often appear to have longer wings and larger bodies than their parents for a few reasons:

1. The growth stage that they’re in. Juveniles experience rapid growth in the first 4-5 years of their life. When they leave the nest, they likely have not attained their full adult proportions. They are still developing the muscle mass and strength they will need for survival.

2. Their wing size. Juveniles tend to have longer wings relative to their body size. This long wingspan serves an important purpose - to give them the impression of being larger when in flight or when seen from a distance.

3. Their proportions. In the early stages, juveniles might have larger feet, wings, and beaks compared to their body size. This contributes to the perception of them being larger than their parents.
