Oysters play roles as both indicator of and benefit provider to healthy waters. The health of Mobile Bay’s oysters tells us how we’re doing fighting pollution from entering our waters, while also lending a helping hand themselves.
If an ecosystem is having trouble growing oysters, that’s a sign that there may be too much pollution. On the flip side, if the oyster population is growing, that means that efforts to fight pollution are taking hold.
Once oysters can grow, they provide several other benefits that accelerate improvements in water quality. As natural filter feeders, oysters pump water through themselves to consume microorganisms. They then eject this cleaned water, making it easier for sunlight to pe*****te coastal waters and aid the growth of seagrasses and increase oxygen in the water.
Large populations also reduce the chance of harmful algal blooms happening. Through this filtration process, oysters also are removing, processing, and absorbing nitrogen that would add to eutrophication, or excessive plant and algal growth. Oysters convert nitrogen into shell material or excrete it as ammonium. Consuming oysters and removing their shells from the water prevents this nitrogen from returning to the water when the oyster dies.
Oysters create a lot of habitats for other species. As larvae, they swim around until they latch onto a surface, oftentimes an adult oyster’s shell. As more larvae attach, a reef begins to take shape. These reefs house mussels, barnacles, and commercially viable species like blue crab, shrimp, speckled trout, and flounder. Younger animals can take refuge and grow into adulthood, while adults use oyster reefs to hunt and feed. This habitat also protects seagrasses from the effects of storms, waves, and floods.

Our watershed has lost most of its historical oyster populations, which are essential for natural water filtration and providing habitat for many species. In fact, we've lost around 80% of our oyster reefs in the last 70 to 80 years. Mobile Baykeeper is dedicated to stopping the pollution that damages the few remaining reefs and reviving these vital oyster populations to improve water quality while also working to restore osyter populations through our oyster gardening program.
