It official, I’m done and ready to go home!
🏰 Edinburgh Castle was our last stop, and you know what…we’ve been spoiled, this was my least favorite castle, it was overcrowded and lacking in things to see. However, the view was amazing as it’s perched high on top of volcanic rock and was like a small city to explore. The one o’clock gun was a highlight, also scared me.

We couldn’t have had a better day out to walk the Royal Mile after, further exploring the Closes and learning about more movie inspirations, this time for Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley, a cemetery with Tom Riddle and potter family tombstones. We also saw a movie being made today in the Lady Stairs Close as we we attempted to visit the Writer’s Museum, which was closed due to filming. The streets became flooded with men and women fully done up in period perfection.

The truth is I’m tired, but have made new friends, seen wonderful places, appreciated the National Trust of Scotland, the information centers and beauty that is Scotland! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Never wasted a moment!

Visit to Edinburgh today started with a tour and tea on H.R. Yacht Britannia.

We jumped on a double decker bus to ride into the city center and the Royal Mile. This walk could be a day trip on its own, lots of shops and “closes” to checkout. Mostly we ate, window shopped and walked.

Would like more time in the big city before I go, but unfortunately today went by too quick!

Weather status per the Scots: it was “a wee bit dreich” out but to me, a perfect sweater weather kinda day!

Our day began at castlecampbell a tower house castle built over a 50 year span in the 1500’s. It was by far the most secluded and quiet castle we visited since you have to hike a minimum of 1/4 mile to get there, no tour buses or groups here! The views went on for miles and who says it rains frequently in Scotland!?! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 it’s been nothing but beautiful since we’ve been here ☀️ thanks Bethany Meachen for the recommendation on this castle!

Findlay, who oversaw the castle, gave us an amazing lunch recommendation to Café at No.44 🤤 ☕️ in Dollar 🇬🇧

By chance we took a random trip to see the coast and found the town of Culross where the locals love talking about the multiple rounds of filming for outlander. The city faces the Firth of Forth, an estuary that meets the North Sea with a boardwalk stroll all along the water. We toured the Culross Palace (not really a palace) in its glorious yellow color and base for multiple seasons of filming. The town is preserved by The National Trust of Scotland, worth a visit!

Random fact, towers have staircases that spiral upwards clockwise for security if the castle is stormed the inhabitants can swing wide to the right down at their attackers with the advantage.

Every day begins with a slow breakfast here and today’s was easy on the eyes, pocket and absolutely delicious! 📍The Liberty Kitchen in Banchory 😋

Crathes Castle was the local castle and home of the Burnett family for over 350 years and they were in partnership with the royal family back to 1323. Lots of history here, several steps to each floor, and beautiful grounds to tour.

Spiral stairways are a thing in castles to help defend your home, the era of this castle included beautifully painted ceilings (I laid on the floor to capture the 7th picture), and hairy coos captured on the way out! I stood right next to the highland cow and talked to him for a bit, you cannot see their eyes under those bangs but he said a lot with his body language 😂 🐮

On the way to the hotel we stopped at the Falkland Palace (the Stewart king’s hunting lodge) but was more important was the restaurant and B&B ( The Covenanter Hotel ) across the street also filmed in Outlander. This place was packed and served a great soup and salad!

We left our small town of Menstrie and Broomhall Castle behind this morning (after a Scottish porridge) towards Aberdeen.

We stopped at Fraser Castle, which was closed for the day, however you could tour the wall gardens where they grow flowers, vegetables and fruit trees espaliered on the walls. 🌹 😍

Ending in the walkable town of Banchory we found awesome food and shopping. 🐑 lambswool sweaters made in Scotland anyone!?!

Started the day off at the William Wallace Monument and braved the hill and the 246 steps up the narrow winding spire, but what a view from the top!
Moved onto the Doune Castle, famous for its part as a film backdrop to Monty Python’s Holy Grail, Winterfell in Game of Thrones and Castle Leoch in Outlander.
Took a break to lunch at Woodside and finished with visiting a countryside tour and Scottish antique & arts Centre.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Learned that a Coo is a cow 🐮 after asking why everyone kept talking about Hairy Coo’s 😳 see 6th pic 😂

Checking out Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 for a potential future retreat!

After arriving this morning in Edinburgh, I got to checking out the Falkirk Wheel of the Scottish Canals, toured the Stirling Castle and checked in for a Broomhall Castle 2 night stay.

Comment any places that you’d like me to check out along the way, I’m here thru the 10th!
