Our host, Joe. couldn't have been more accommodating. Always ready to provide anything we needed and to suggest local restaurants, attractions, etc. The house is dated but that's part of it's charm. Everything was super clean and basic supplies were provided. You can walk to the local hometown diner for a great breakfast (not to mention an Awesome Friday Night fish fry). Also within walking distance is the dam/waterfall on the Black River. Can't wait to return. Thanks Joe!!!!

When dressing for a winter outing, your inner layer should pull moisture away from your body so that can evaporate, helping to keep you warmer. Wool, silk and synthetics are good choices but avoid cotton like the plague as it holds way too much moisture and takes too long to dry.

Did you know that cool, wet weather can lead to hypothermia just as easily as extremely cold temperatures? With moderate temperatures and rain in the forecast for much of the Adirondacks this coming weekend, hikers should be prepared with plenty of warm, waterproof, and moisture-wicking layers.

While fall brings beautiful scenery and quieter trails, it also brings much cooler temperatures, changing weather, and other challenges. Falling leaves can completely cover trail systems, making it difficult to navigate.
👉 Research the trail ahead of time to know milestones like junctions, bridges, or markers to keep you on trail and be sure to keep your head up while hiking to see the trail markers on the trees along the way.

This was our second visit and we had a fabulous time! Our host was available to us whenever needed. He was a tour guide on a hike up bald mountain. Left treats for us upon our arrival. We can’t say enough about this hidden gem nestled in a quaint town of friendly neighbors. The location makes it easy to plan day trips to many destinations. We plan on returning soon! Thanks for everything Joe!

Joe is a great host. His house is comfortable and clean. It is stocked with all the essentials and a lot of little extras. Great screened in porch. 3 bedrooms, two baths, mud room. Walking distance to a local bar and diner. Great place to stay!

Area has beautiful scenery, and we enjoyed the trail along the old Canal Road. We were on foot, but met several enthusiastic folks on bikes as well. Diner nearby is open only for breakfast and lunch except Fri and Sat night, but there is a good reason for the line of cars and pickups parked outside each day after an early morning of fishing. The cottage has a cozy feel, yet plenty of room for families.

Wilderness Search: On July 22 at 11 p.m., DEC’s Ray Brook Dispatch received a call from a pair of hikers reporting that a member of their party was overdue from hiking Mount Marcy in the High Peaks Wilderness Area. Forest Ranger LaPierre responded to the Adirondak Loj parking lot to interview the reporting party. At 1:36 a.m., Ranger LaPierre located the 33-year-old subject from New York City up the trail from Marcy Dam. The subject had suffered a knee injury, was unable to walk, and likely dehydrated. The Ranger splinted the injury and provided the hiker with warmth, food, and water. She escorted the hiker back to the outpost and set him up in a sleeping bag so he could rest while the Ranger continued back to the Loj. Ranger LaPierre then drove a UTV in to pick up the subject, and at 4:45 a.m., the hiker was reunited with his party and taken for further medical care.

This was our second trip at WWMW. Joe is an exceptional host and the most friendly individual who is full of great ideas to keep the family entertained. He not only decorated the place for my son’s birthday but also supplied gifts for both of my kids that were perfect and age appropriate. It made unpacking that much easier when both toddlers were buzzing around the house excited with their new toys. He goes out of his way to make guests feel welcome. 10/10 recommend staying here over the KOA in Old Forge. The sound of the water and no noisy neighbors is ideal and old forge is only 30 mins away. My kids love “fishing” in the dam down the street and running laps in the backyard.

Good stay - We actually traveled to the area for work, but took advantage and stayed an extra day to do some hiking. The house was better than I expected given the price point and age. The value is there where it counts; its clean, everything works, and the updates to things like sinks, toilets, shower, plumbing fixtures etc. are recent and nice enough to make it comfortable to use. Due to a health issue, we have to stay places with a working kitchen where we can cook, this house has all the basic things we needed. Joe is a great host, and really understands how to do Airbnb well. We appreciated the attention to detail that made the stay convenient and hassle free. Would definitely stay again.

Ticks: Wear light-colored clothing with a tight weave to spot ticks easily. Wear enclosed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Tuck pant legs into socks or boots and shirt into pants. Check clothes and any exposed skin frequently for ticks while outdoors. Consider using insect repellent. Stay on cleared, well-traveled trails and walk in the center of trails. Avoid dense woods and bushy areas

Injured Hiker
A 41-year-old hiker had to be rescued from Bald Mountain after suffering an ankle injury. Eight Forest Rangers were sent to the trailhead for a possible carry-out. However, due to the hiker's remote location, a helicopter had to be used.

The injured hiker was airlifted from the shore of Lake Mary Louise and taken to a local hospital. A Forest Ranger walked the remaining hiking party to safety.

Forest Rangers were busy rescuing two injured hikers and 2 others who were lost, all in the span of just two days.

Water -- Preserve, Conserve, and Recreate

Boating, fishing, and swimming are just a few outdoor recreational activities which involve water. While water can be enjoyed for recreational purposes -- it also must be preserved and conserved as a valuable natural resource. New York State is recognizing the importance of water during the second week of May. But we should mark our calendars each day to take actions to help ensure clean and safe water sources for drinking, transportation, recreation, and more.
