That’s pretty neat! I’ve seen several with an odd antler!

Have you ever seen a buck with a weird antler? Normally, White-tail Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) antlers have a relatively similar shape on each side of the head. But you’ll occasionally find bucks with an atypical anther like this. How can this be?

There are several factors that may be at play. During summer, the velvet-covered antlers are quite soft. If this buck’s right antler hit a tree branch as it was developing, the antler might have been bent or broken, yet still maintained its blood supply under the velvet. However, the break to the developing antler beam resulted in this atypical growth form. It’s analogous to having a broken arm that isn’t set properly and then the arm bone heals incorrectly.

Other causes of oddly-shaped antlers include 1) injuries to the pedicle (bony stalk on the skull where the antler attaches) when the antler falls off the prior winter or 2) a leg injury.

Wait…what? How could a broken leg alter the shape of an antler? Nutrient limitation. The nutrient demands of healing a fractured leg bone may lead to insufficient nutrients going toward the formation of antler bone. As a consequence, the antler develops an atypical shape.

That means you’ll need a red lens on your cell phone or camera or flashlight when you’re out on the beach during nighttime and predawn hours.
