Passport Application Times Taking a Lot Longer Than Normal

Do you need to get or renew a passport for an upcoming trip or cruise? The U.S. State Department just issued an update and passport applications are now taking much longer than normal to process.

Mail delays are impacting processing times for passport applications. Routine service can now take up to 18 weeks from the day when an application is submitted. This 18 week timeframe includes up to six weeks for mailing time and 12 weeks for processing.

This 18 week timeframe is up from the normal processing time of 10-12 weeks from earlier this month.

For those who want to have their passport application expedited, it can still take 12 weeks from the time you submit your application until the time you receive your passport according to the State Department. This service costs an extra $60 and cuts the processing time in half.

The U.S. Department of State is also recommending that you pay an extra $17.56 for 1-2 day delivery of your completed passport.

The longer processing times are likely due to many countries around the world now opening up for tourists.

In 2020, the number of U.S passports issued was around half of those issued in the previous three years. The U.S. State Department is now overwhelmed with demand for passports leading to longer processing times.

If you need to apply or renew a passport for a trip this year, you should probably get started sooner rather than later, so you can receive it in time.

If you are taking a closed-looped cruise (starts and ends in the same U.S. port) you do not need a passport, although it is highly recommended that you travel with one.

Princess Cruises Gives U.S. Restart Plans for 8 Cruise Ships

Princess Cruises has announced restart plans for eight cruise ships from U.S. ports this fall as the cruise line will sail from three different ports. The cruises will depart from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Ft. Lauderdale this fall.

Starting between September 25 and November 28, 2021, cruises onboard eight Princess MedallionClass cruise ships will visit the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Mexico, Hawaii, and the California Coast.

Majestic Princess and Grand Princess will sail from Los Angeles providing a springboard to a variety of destinations, including the California Coast and Mexico on seven-day cruises, and the Islands of Hawaii on 15-day cruises. The ships will also offer three- to five-day Getaway cruises to the California Coast and Mexico.

Ruby Princess will sail out of the iconic Port of San Francisco. The cruise ship will start with seven-day California Coast cruises before adding 15-day cruises exploring four distinct island jewels in Hawaii and 10-day Mexico cruises to the lineup.

Enchanted Princess begins with two brand new cruises from Ft. Lauderdale to start her existing inaugural season of 10-day cruises to the Southern and Eastern Caribbean.

Sky Princess, Regal Princess and Caribbean Princess will sail from Ft. Lauderdale and guests can island hop through the Caribbean with three-, five-, seven- and 14-day cruises available in the Eastern Caribbean. Cruisers will be able to visit some of the best-known beaches in the world, and the Western Caribbean will allow guests to explore Ancient Mayan Ruins and the beauty of unspoiled coral reefs and underwater caves.

Crown Princess will take cruisers to the Panama Canal from Ft. Lauderdale on a series of 10-day cruises to this iconic cruise wonder of the world.

Dining, entertainment, and shore excursion details are currently being finalized and will be communicated in the coming weeks.

Princess Cruises sailing through 2021 are available for guests who have received their final dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the beginning of the cruise and have proof of vaccination. Crew vaccinations will be in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Second Celebrity Cruise Ship Approved for Caribbean Cruises From Florida

A second Celebrity cruise ship has been approved by the CDC to resume cruises to the Caribbean in July from Florida. Celebrity Equinox will sail her first cruise in over a year on July 25 out of Port Everglades.

The recently revolutionized Celebrity Equinox will set sail on a week-long cruise visiting the beautiful Mexican ports of Cozumel and Costa Maya, along with Nassau, Bahamas.

The cruise ship will sail with enhanced health and safety standards that are the culmination of more than a year of diligent work with public health authorities, government agencies and its Healthy Sail Panel of scientific, medical and public health leaders. Celebrity Equinox will sail with at least 95% of passengers and crew members vaccinated.

All guests 2 years of age and older will be required to wear an appropriate face covering in the cruise terminal. Once onboard, and unless otherwise stipulated by local governments in the destinations being visited, masks will not be required of vaccinated guests in accordance with CDC guidance for sailings with vaccinated crew and guests.

“It is so exciting to announce yet another ship on the heels of Celebrity Millennium leading the industry’s Caribbean comeback to rave reviews just this past Saturday. From the outpouring of comments and emotion from our guests and crew on that sailing, it’s clear that people are ready to cruise back to normal,” said Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo. “We’ve all been waiting for the day we could get away, again, to the places we’ve been dreaming of and that ‘someday’ is here.

Celebrity Cruises will have nine cruise ships in service this summer including Celebrity Equinox. The eight others are:

• Celebrity Millennium, which began sailing seven-night Caribbean itineraries from St. Maarten on June 5; and will reposition to Seattle to sail seven-night Alaska Dawes Glacier cruises beginning July 23.
• Celebrity Summit will then sail the remaining St. Maarten season through August, followed by plans to sail a new series of four- and five-night sailings from Fort Lauderdale to the Western Caribbean through late October.
• Celebrity Apex – sailing seven-night Greek Isles itineraries from June 19;
• Celebrity Edge – sailing a rotating schedule of Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Fort Lauderdale, beginning June 26;
• Celebrity Silhouette – sailing the UK coastline as of July 3;
• Celebrity Flora – returning to the extraordinary Galapagos islands as of July 3, followed by the award-winning Celebrity Xpedition and intimate 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration on July 24, and September 18, respectively.

Cruise Ships Planning Summer 2021 Voyages in the Caribbean

2021 Summer Caribbean Cruises

It’s summertime, and cruises are returning in the Caribbean! Here’s a selection of cruise ships that will operate, starting in June, from islands in the Caribbean and the Bahamas. And know that there likely will be more options this summer if the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) gives the greenlight. For example, Carnival Cruise Line has revealed plans to start up with three ships from Galveston and Miami as soon as it’s allowed by the CDC. Keep in mind that the pandemic regulations and health protocols can still change, but here are numerous cruise programs currently on the schedule operating from overseas homeports.

Celebrity Cruises

The recently renovated Celebrity Millennium will begin sailing June 5 with 7-night itineraries round-trip from St. Maarten through August. Two itineraries are offered – one to Aruba, Curaçao and Barbados, and the other to Tortola, St. Lucia and Barbados. The ship will sail with a vaccinated crew and will be available to vaccinated adult guests and children under 18 with a negative PCR test result within 72 hours of embarkation.

Crystal Symphony
Crystal Cruises plans to operate 15 Caribbean sailings starting August 2 through December aboard Crystal Symphony. The 10-night cruises sail roundtrip from either Philipsburg, St. Maarten, or St. John; Antigua and Barbuda. The cruises will visit Barbados, St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Maarten, and the British Virgin Islands.

And, as announced in February, all guests must be fully inoculated with a COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before boarding any Crystal ship.

Crystal Serenity

Crystal also will operate Bahamas cruises on the Crystal Serenity, offering weekly departures from Nassau and Bimini to Harbour Island, Long Island and San Salvador. The new itineraries will operate July 3 through October 2021, for a total of 32 “Bahamas Escapes” voyages roundtrip from Nassau on Saturdays, and from Bimini on Sundays. Guests must be fully inoculated with a COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to boarding any Crystal ship.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Joy will offer week-long itineraries from Montego Bay, Jamaica, starting Aug. 7. The cruises will visit Harvest Caye, the line’s private destination in Belize; Roatán in the Bay Islands of Honduras; Cozumel, Mexico; and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. All passengers and crew members on all of Norwegian’s initial return sailings will be required to receive the full COVID-19 vaccination.

Also, the Norwegian Gem will sail from Punta Cana (La Romana), Dominican Republic, starting August 15. The seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises will visit Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and Antigua.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International will return to cruising on June 12, with 7-night roundtrips from Nassau, Bahamas, on Adventure of the Seas. The cruises are available to adults who have proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, as well as those under age 18 with negative test results. The crew will be fully vaccinated. The cruises will visit Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, for two days, and also visit Grand Bahama Island and Cozumel, Mexico.

Seabourn

Seabourn plans to restart guest sailings with weekly roundtrip cruises from Bridgetown, Barbados, beginning on July 18. Seabourn Odyssey will operate Southern Caribbean cruises to ports including Antigua, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and St. Kitts. Guests can also choose a 14-day option, which combines the two different seven-day itineraries in the Caribbean Sea. The voyages are open to people that are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Viking

Viking will operate the new 8-day “Bermuda Escape” itinerary from Hamilton, Bermuda, starting June 15. The Viking Orion will overnight in Hamilton and St. George’s, then will visit King’s Wharf. All of Viking’s new “Welcome Back” require proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises plans to restart on June 19 with the Star Breeze in the Caribbean. Star Breeze will operate 7-day “Beach Fun & Sun: A Remote Caribbean Getaway” voyages roundtrip from St. Maarten. Ports of call include St. Barth, Tortola, Jost Van D**e, Virgin Gorda and Anguilla. Windstar Cruises will require proof of a current COVID-19 vaccination for all guests, until further notice.

Cruises Will Finally Restart From U.S. Ports

It’s been 14 months since the last cruise ships departed from U.S. cruise ports offering vacations. However, here is finally light at the end of the tunnel with a number of cruise lines announcing when cruises will finally resume.

Here are cruise lines and ships that we know will be sailing from U.S. ports this summer. While only a handful of sailings have been confirmed so far, more cruises should be announced over the coming weeks.

Celebrity Cruises – Celebrity will begin sailings on July 23 on Celebrity Summit. The cruise ship will sail a series of nine cruises from Seattle to Alaska with port stops in Ketchikan, Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier, Juneau, and Skagway.

Royal Caribbean – Royal Caribbean will have two cruise ships sailing to Alaska this summer on Ovation of the Seas and Serenade of the Seas. Serenade will debut on July 19 and Ovation on August 13. Both ships will sail from Seattle offering 7-night cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line – Carnival Cruise Line opened Alaska sailings departing from Seattle beginning July 27, with weekly departures through September 14 aboard Carnival Miracle. There are seven 7-day cruises featuring calls in Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan, as well as scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord. The September 14 departure is an 8-day cruise with an additional stop in Icy Strait Point.

Holland America Line – Holland America Line will offer 10 cruises from Seattle to Alaska on Nieuw Amsterdam starting on July 24. The 7-day “Alaskan Explorer” itinerary calls at Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Sitka and Ketchikan. Scenic cruising in Alaska’s iconic locales includes Glacier Bay and Stephens Passage.

Princess Cruises – Princess Cruises will resume operations in Alaska starting July 25 through September 26, with 7-day cruises onboard Majestic Princess, a MedallionClass ship. Its cruises will visit signature ports, glaciers and attractions in Alaska including Glacier Bay National Park, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan.

Norwegian Cruise Line – NCL will begin sailing to Alaska on Norwegian Bliss on August 7. Norwegian Bliss will sail week-long cruises from Seattle through early October.

While cruise lines have only confirmed cruises to Alaska so far for this summer, we should know more about sailings from other ports around the country in a few days as cruise lines finalize details.

All cruises to Alaska in 2021 are pending authorization from the CDC. However, cruise lines expect to receive it shortly.

CDC Changes a Few Mask Rules on Cruises

The CDC updated their mask wearing rules today that is part of the Conditional Sail Order on cruises.

The new guidelines state that vaccinated crew and passengers may gather or conduct activities outdoors, including engaging in extended meal service or beverage consumption, without wearing a mask except in crowded settings.

The new rules also took out language that stated that passengers should wear masks while seated on the pool deck area or while congregating outside of recreational water facilities.

They now say that guests should not wear a mask when doing activities that may get the mask wet, like swimming at a beach or in recreational water facilities.

The Order permits temporarily removing a mask for brief periods of time while eating or drinking, removal of the mask for extended meal service or beverage consumption would constitute a violation of this Order for unvaccinated guests.

Also, cruise lines at their discretion, may advise passengers and crew that—if they are fully vaccinated—they may engage in self-guided or independent exploration during port stops, if they wear a mask while indoors. Foreign jurisdictions may have their own requirements and all passengers will have to abide by their current guidelines.

Guidelines that stayed the same were that masks don’t have to be worn in one’s own cabin but will be required while traveling through transportation hubs in the U.S.

Cunard Dark Rum Truffles

Reminiscent of the Petit Fours served after dinner across Cunard’s fleet, Cunard Development Chef Gareth Bowen shares a luxurious dark rum truffle recipe. With simple ingredients, they are the perfect treat to make for a loved one. You could even leave one on their pillow before bed for the ultimate Cunard touch.

Ingredients:

◆ 250ml (1 cup) whipping cream
◆ 100g (3.5oz) quality milk chocolate, finely chopped
◆ 200g (7oz) quality dark chocolate, finely chopped
◆ 25g (1oz) unsalted butter, diced
◆ 2-3 tbsp. dark rum (Bermuda Gosling’s Rum is our chef’s favorite!)
◆ 5 tbsp. cocoa powder, for dusting

Method:

Heat the cream in a small pan, removing it from the heat just before it comes to the boil.

Put the milk and dark chocolate in a large bowl and pour the hot cream over the chocolate and stir well until melted and smooth.

Add the butter, and rum to taste, and mix well. Leave to cool.

Once cooled, cover the chocolate mixture and transfer to the fridge for at least four hours, or overnight.

Line a large tray with parchment paper. Sift half of the cocoa powder onto two large plates (one to dust your hands and the other to coat the truffles).

Use a teaspoon to scoop up marble-sized pieces (approx. 15g, ½ oz.) of the chocolate mixture. Press the palms of your hands into one of the cocoa powder plates, then use them to lightly coat and quickly roll the truffle piece into a ball.

Roll the truffle in the cocoa powder on the other plate to coat, then place on the tray.

Repeat these steps to use up all the mixture (which should make approximately 40 truffles). Cover and chill them in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Hints and Tips:

Add more rum for a deeper flavor, omit entirely or try substituting for a different alcohol such as Baileys, whisky or brandy.

When making the truffles don’t roll the chocolate in your hands for too long or it will begin to melt.

It’s best to have cold hands for making the truffles – try rinsing with cold water and drying before you begin.

CRUISING WITH PURPOSE & CONFIDENCE

If there’s any silver lining that’s come from this year, it’s that we’ve become more thoughtful with how we travel. Overall, travelers and travel companies alike have become more considerate of environmental impact, safety precautions and how to give back at a time when so many across the globe are struggling. Holland America Line’s innovative “Cruise with Purpose” shore excursions are an example of a surging focus on meaningful travel. Here’s what you can expect from the cruise line’s many excursions:

Cruise with Purpose & Confidence on Holland America Line

The “Cruise with Purpose” program aims to enlighten souls and reduce carbon footprints, one destination at a time. Examples of shore excursions include discovering Alaska’s whales in Juneau, as adventurous guests board a research vessel for a closer look into the habitats of humpback whales. Or planting a tree as part of Iceland’s reforestation program, after circling the active Hengill Volcano at Reykjavik. In Brisbane, Australia, a heartwarming visit to a koala sanctuary is on the itinerary. Holland America Line has received environmental honors such as Port Metro Vancouver’s EcoAction Blue Circle Award and the Port of Seattle’s Green Gateway Award for commitment to sustainability.

The honors don’t stop there. Recently, the cruise line was named Top Alaska Cruise line in the 2020 AFAR Traveler Awards — the third time winning in the awards’ five-year existence! Voters spoke of the immersive elements of a Holland America Line cruise. For instance, its Alaska cruises boast more visits than other lines to Glacier Bay National Park, a stunning highlight of Alaska’s Inside Passage and one of the largest international protected areas in the world. The nature spotting opportunities on board are unparalleled as well — wide open decks for panoramic views and day-long Tundra Tours are just a few of the attractions that keep travelers coming back to Holland America Line.

The nearly 6,500 unique excursions offered are consistently recognized —the discerning readers of Porthole Cruise Magazine acknowledged the cruise line for having the best shore excursions in its 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards (just one of four awards Holland took home). Whether it’s making authentic Italian pizza in Naples, going zip-lining in Costa Rica or taking salsa lessons in Havana, these immersive, always optional experiences leave travelers feeling deeply connected to the places they visit. An exclusive partnership with FOOD & WINE magazine has elevated the culinary-themed shore excursions. Best of all, due to Holland’s generous new booking policy, these excursions are safe to book in uncertain times.

Frequent travelers know there are few things more frustrating than having to cancel travel plans and not getting a refund. Luckily, there’s no reason to worry when booking a 2021 cruise on Holland America Line. The cruise line has temporarily adjusted its cancellation policy to make it easier for guests to cancel or change plans — now, for any cruises booked by January 31, 2021, you can cancel for any reason up to 30 days before departure and automatically receive a Future Cruise Credit in the amount of non-refundable fees collected by Holland America Line (the remainder will be refunded to you). With all the stressors this year has provided, refund policies shouldn’t be one of them! Get excited to plan an unforgettable, purpose-filled future adventure, secure in the fact that Holland has your back.

8 Celebrity Cruise Ships Will Offer Cruises to the Caribbean in 2022-2023

Celebrity Cruises has announced their 2022-2023 Caribbean cruise season and the cruise line will offer options on eight different cruise ships.

Celebrity will also have their two newest cruise ships, Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge, sailing in the Caribbean.

They will be joined by four cruise ships recently ‘revolutionized’ as part of a multi-million-dollar fleet renovation program, Celebrity Equinox, Celebrity Millennium, Celebrity Silhouette and Celebrity Summit; and two additional gems in the fleet, Celebrity Constellation and Celebrity Reflection.

Together, the cruise ships will sail to some of the world’s most breath-taking island destinations from four homeports: Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The wonderfully varied program offers four- to 11-night island itineraries, with an expanded offering of seven-night itineraries, and a once-in-a-lifetime Panama Canal itinerary.

Because Celebrity Cruises believes vacations should be effortless from the start, Wi-Fi, drinks and tips are now ‘Always Included’ in a Celebrity cruise purchase, bringing that wonderful feeling of ‘everything is taken care of’ to life. In addition, the cruise line’s ‘Cruise with Confidence’ program provides flexible cancellations and best price guarantees.

Celebrity Apex, Celebrity’s brand-new Edge Series cruise ship, will sail round-trip from the beautiful, state-of-the-art Terminal 25 at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on rotating seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. From mid-November 2022 to mid-April 2023, guests can either soak up the sun in Puerto Rico, Tortola, St. Maarten, The Bahamas and St. Kitts and Nevis; or indulge their island dreams in Key West, Florida, Belize and Grand Cayman.

Now sailing year-round from Fort Lauderdale for the entire 2022-2023 Caribbean season, Celebrity Equinox will offer 9-night winter itineraries through some of the most stunning destinations in the Southern Caribbean, including the U.S. Virgin Islands, Antigua, Barbados and St. Lucia.

For the first time, Celebrity Millennium will sail roundtrip from San Juan, Puerto Rico on three different unique weeklong Southern Caribbean voyages visiting a range of island favorites including Aruba, Barbados, Curacao, Antigua, Grenada, Bonaire and Dominica.

Celebrity Silhouette will sail from the Cruise Capital of the World, PortMiami, on a rotating schedule of short and long island sailings. Her 10-night itinerary visits popular islands in the Eastern Caribbean; while her four-night getaway to Key West and the Bahamas provides guests a taste of island life.

Celebrity Summit will sail three different short Caribbean itineraries, offering four- and five-night “quick escapes” to Key West and the Bahamas; Key West and Mexico; or Grand Cayman and Mexico.

Celebrity Constellation will sail roundtrip from Tampa, Florida on a 10-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary; and an 11-night Ultimate Caribbean and The Americas itinerary, visiting Grand Cayman, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico with some sailings featuring an overnight stay in Cartagena, Colombia.

Celebrity Reflection will offer two different week-long itineraries to either Mexico, Jamaica and Grand Cayman or the Eastern Caribbean and the Bahamas.
