In the past few days, Bujumbura has received it's first good rain after a long dry period. But it is interesting to know that at the same time, Jerusalem was receiving it's first rain after the long dry summer! In Israel, the months May to September receive no rain at all.

ENGLISH:

EILAT: CITY ON THE RED SEA:

‘Eilat’ is the southern-most city in the land of Israel, facing directly onto the Red Sea. The Red Sea however is an extremely large body of water 1930km long with two major stretches like fingers at its northern end ‒ and historians and theologians alike are not exactly sure where the Israelites crossed it at. In the picture, you are looking East towards the mountains of Jordan. Today, there is very little of Biblical value able to be visited in Eilat. Nevertheless, Israelis & tourists from all over Europe today use it as a place to come on holidays.

ENGLISH:

This is how Israel’s main International Airport looked in 2013 ‒ its probably different by now. Although listed as being in Tel Aviv, it is actually 20km from the centre of the city & 45km from Jerusalem. Fortunately, once you land you can now catch the train to either ‒ unless its on the Sabbath, when all public transport stops for 24 hours.

Both bus and taxi are also available. In 2019, just prior to Covid stopping most people from travelling, 24.8 million passengers arrived in Israel by this airport, despite the country’s population being just over 9 million people. Today, there is a 2nd international airport near Eilat (called ‘Ramon Airport’) in the far south of the country.

ENGLISH:

In this picture you can see (with the car in front of it) the Petra Hotel in the Old City of Jerusalem about 100m from Jaffa Gate. To the Left is the moat (a defensive trench dug round the walls of a fortress or Castle) belonging to what is now the Tower of David Museum, which contains some of the remains of the Fortress created by King Herod in this location. Most parts of Jerusalem are very safe to visit at night, with the only difference being whether the shops are open & how many people are there with you!

Believe it or not, this is Jerusalem! You may think that this is the Seoni Market in Bujumbura, but in reality this is a market on one of the streets in the Old City of Jerusalem in Israel! The main difference being, the people, the prices (Israel is very expensive to buy things in) and the fact that cars do not travel through Jerusalem’s Old City streets very often ‒ perhaps less than one per hour.

ENGLISH:

Many people when they think about Israel, they only think of things associated with the Bible. But the reality is that Israel today is a modern nation with Railways covering a significant portion of the country. Today, you can travel from Tel Aviv all the way to Nahariya on the Northern Coast near the border of Lebanon, to as far south as Beer Sheva. Travellers can also reach Beit She’an making visiting the impressive ruins there extremely easy.

An extremely convenient benefit is that you can now also travel from the Ben Gurion Airport to either Tel Aviv or Jerusalem by train & departing every 20 minutes, avoiding having to pay for expensive Taxis. The journey from the airport to Jerusalem via train (a distance of 43km) only takes 20 minutes. Travel via rail allows passengers to enjoy a different viewpoint to those taking road based transport, and helps avoid delays when the roads become jamb packed. It also helps reduce the number of vehicles using the roads.

The journey from Tel Aviv on the Mediterranean Sea to Jerusalem ‒ a distance of 56 km ‒ takes just over 30 minutes. In 2019 a new railway was established, cutting the time taken via rail from x to y and costing just over 23NIS. Its worthwhile noting that most trains and buses do not operate on the Sabbath (sundown Friday to sundown Saturday) so if visiting, make your plans accordingly.

ENGLISH:

This is Jaffa Gate looking from inside the Old City of Jerusalem with stone benches for tourists to just sit and contemplate what is before them. Like the majority of the walls, the gate is only 500 years old & is not from the Biblical period. Those walls and gates were unfortunately destroyed and rebuilt many times over the last 1950 years.

If you look carefully, immediately after exiting the Gate you can see a doorway leading up to the Ramparts Walk, where you can walk along the top of the walls surrounding the city. On the far right you can see a Tourist Information Centre, with maps that can help you navigate the Old City ‒ definitely something worth remembering if you plan to visit Jerusalem!

ENGLISH:

This is the remains of one of the places Abraham used to dwell in while in the Promised Land. Obviously, much development has occurred since the time Abraham stayed here 4100 years ago, with the ruins you see here probably only being 1300 years old. Following the Romans overcoming the Jewish Revolt in 70AD, Beer Sheva became a Roman city until it was completely destroyed during the Arab invasion not long after Muhammad’s death and not rebuilt until recently.

A visitor to Beer Sheva 120 years ago reported seeing only one building still being used, and a small number of tents. Over the last 100 years, it has grown to be the largest city in the South of Israel, being known as the capital of the Negev Desert with 209,000 residents. Tell Beer Sheva (the ruins shown in the photo) is 7.2km from the modern city of Be’er Sheva.

ENGLISH:

On the Temple Mount between the entrance at the Magrabi Gate & the Al Aqsa Mosque can be found these ornately carved pieces of stone. But what are they? These are called “capitals” (yes, the same word as used in Capital City or Capital Letter) and were designed to be used as decorations for the top of columns that may have supported the roof in the Temple Compound surrounds or various buildings (Roman, Muslim or Crusader) constructed on the Temple Mount over the past 2000 years. So now when you read “capital” in the Bible (especially in the Old Testament), you’ll know what it means! In the background is the top of the Western Wall, as seen from the inside of the compound.

ENGLISH:

This is a street within the Old City of Jerusalem in the Jewish Quarter in a place where no cars are allowed. Despite the location, none of these buildings are older than 1967. The reason is that in 1948 the Jordanians destroyed all the buildings in the Jewish Quarter in an attempt to make sure the Jews could never return. It was only after 1967 when Israel won back control in the 6 Day War that Israel could begin to rebuild the buildings there.

This is a ‘watch-tower’: a type of building constructed in Israel amongst the fields to allow the farmer to keep a watch over his crops prior to the harvest to protect them from theft. It could also be used to store the harvest in or live in while the harvest was under way. This particular example is found at the Nazareth Village display on the outskirts of Nazareth.

ENGLISH:

These two photos were taken just 2 months apart and are of the same part of a valley just East of the Sea of Galilee in Northern Israel, in an area called the ‘Golan’. Immediately evident is the difference in colour, due to the season they were taken in. Israel has four seasons ‒ Summer, Autumn, Winter & Spring. Most of Israel’s rain is received between November & March, during their Winter & early Spring.

When it is raining, the grass grows and many parts of Israel become green like the photo you see here. But when it stops raining in late Spring, the heat quickly dries the grass out until it becomes brown like in the other photo. Unlike Burundi, Israel has a great difference in Temperature between Summer & Winter. Depending on where you are in the country, Summer can be as hot as 40 degrees and Winter can be as low as Zero (or even less). So Israel can look and feel really different depending on the time you visit!
