Greece: Tourists have to pay climate tax
Wednesday, December 13th, 2023
Holidaymakers in Greece will have to pay a seasonal climate tax from January 1, 2024. It will replace the accommodation tax and must be paid on site upon departure, the Greek Tourist Office said.
The following taxes per night and room are due in hotels from March to October:
One and two star hotels: 1.50 euros
Three-star hotels: 3 euros
Four-star hotels: 7 euros
Five-star hotels: 10 euros
Anyone who stays in furnished rooms, flats and apartments pays 1.50 euros. For short-term rentals via appropriate platforms, 1.50 euros is due, or 10 euros if the accommodation is larger than 80 square meters. In self-catering houses and villas, guests pay ten euros per day.
In the period from November to February the taxes decrease:
One and two star hotels: 0.50 euros
Three-star hotels: 1.50 euros
Four-star hotels: 3 euros
Five star hotels: 4 euros
Furnished rooms, flats, apartments: 0.50 euros
Short-term rental via appropriate platforms: 0.50 euros, over 80 square meters: 4 euros
Self-catering houses and villas: 4 euros
The proceeds from the climate resilience levy should flow into a fund for natural disaster protection. Heat, forest fires and floods have “displaced” half a million tourists this year, according to a study by the National Bank of Greece (NBG). Tourism income was reduced by 300 million euros, reports the Handelsblatt with reference to the study.
