A rising business and lifestyle center
A gateway growth center linking North and South Cebu
South Coast City is poised to become the country’s most prominent business district after Makati, MOA, and BGC. Occupying 26 hectares in South Road Properties, South Coast City represents one of the last remaining prime commercial spaces in all of Cebu. It is also a unique collaborative venture of the country’s two most prominent names in real estate: Ayala and SM.

The 26-hectare master planned development is envisioned to be a gateway growth center linking North and South Cebu with Mactan through its strategic location. South Coast City is also set to become a lifestyle and entertainment destination for the Visayas region, bringing attractions such as an Arena, Convention Center, and main park, among many other mixed-use facilities, to support Cebu’s growing demand for business and areas for convergence.

The Arena is set to be the preferred destination for major local and international entertainment and sporting events while the Convention Center will be one of the largest in Cebu once completed.

Atlantis Resort Dumaguete -- Just a twenty minute drive from the local airport (following a 60-minute flight from Manila), on a long peaceful stretch of beach, lies the lush and luxurious Atlantis Dive Resort. Surrounded by an amazing tropical garden with some of the rarest plants to be found in the Philippines it is just a short trip to some of the most renowned dive sites in the Philippines - Apo Island, Balicasag Reef, and the local Dauin Marine Sanctuaries.

Dumaguete's Diving -- The Philippines is as beautiful under water as it is stunning on land. The archipelago is home to more than 3000 species of fish and 450 species of coral, home to the most diverse marine life in the world. Dazzling coral gardens, dramatic walls, historical wrecks and among the best muck diving in the world, you will see critters you never knew existed. Following are a few of the best known dive sites of Dumaguete.

Diving from Atlantis Resort, Dumaguete, Dauin, Philippines Apo Island -- Half an hour boat ride away is world famous Apo Island. A 72 hectare volcanic island, it has a “Marine Reserve” designation and is included in the Philippines’ NIPA’s LIST (Nationally Integrated Protected Areas). The waters around Apo Island are full of both soft and hard corals, schools of jacks and other marine fishes. Because of its exceptional marine life, the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has chosen it to be their centerpiece attraction of an underwater eco-system. This island boasts 10 dive sites although it is possible to start at one site, ride the predictable currents and end at another. An Apo outing is planned as a whole day trip on a large, comfortable outrigger banca, with 2 dives in the morning and one afternoon dive, an on-board packed lunch, complimentary coffee, tea and towel.

Dauin Sanctuary -- The marked feature of this site is a reef full of hard corals sweeping down to about 25 meters. Staghorn, lettuce, cabbage corals all abound. Near the sandy area is an artificial reef made up of old tires which is full of cardinal and other juvenile fishes.

Masaplod Sanctuary -- A basketball court size area that is full of juvenile jacks, a turtle or two, rabbitfish, sweetlips, angelfishes and giant emperor fishes. Although the smallest of all the sanctuaries, it has 50 percent more target food fish species than Apo or Dauin. If you’re into fish photography, this is the place to go to, as the residents go about their business, unmindful of visitors in their mids.

The tranquil Twin Lakes of Balinsasayaw and Danao is another place that can be visited as a day trip from Dumaguete to escape the heat. You can kayak, swim, eat barbeque with friends or go hiking around the lakes on the jungle track. The extensive rainforest ecosystem surrounding the lakes is home to pristine flora and fauna.

Dauin, just fifteen kilometers south of Dumaguete has some comfortable resorts with swimming pools, good restaurants, bars and chocolate brown sand beaches. They also offer easy access to Apo island for diving or snorkeling. The reef just off Dauin has been declared a sanctuary and the snorkeling is superb as the coral gardens are in pristine condition and swarming with fish.

If island life is what you are looking for then mystical Siquijor is only an hour away by boat. It has some fabulous white sand beaches, interesting caving, ancient churches, a stunning waterfall with three tiers and a marine conservation area on offer. There are some quality resorts here with swimming pools, dive shops and excellent restaurants. The island also has the interesting mananambals , shamanistic folk healers who apparently have the knowledge to practice sorcery.

Currently Tubbataha reef is being voted as one of the 7 wonders of the world, together with Bohol’s Chocolate Hills. Tubbataha being situated near one of the Island Paradise in the Philippines, highlighting Tubbata could actually be one of the reasons that contributed to it’s Paradise title. Having my thumbs crossed that it will earn the award of one of the 7 wonders of the world, later on in this article you will discover why without having to go there yourself. First off, it is wonderful.

There are two atolls making up Tubbataha’s ecosystem that is situated in the middle of the Sulu Sea. It is the sea diver’s sanctuary, it is the paradise of all paradise in marine life. The reefs are found in the Cagayan Ridge where the dead underwater volcanoes lie starting from the north to at the Sultana Shoal and ending in the south of the San Miguel Islands. From Puerto Princesa City it is 92 nautical miles from Palawan and around 80 nautical miles from southwest of Cagayancillo, and is the municipality that is currently practicing jurisdiction over the said reef. In August 11, 1988, it was proclaimed as a National Marine Park and was one of the inscribed UNESCO World Heritage in 1993, meaning that this place had withstood recognition of a rich and highly valued marine life in the world,

The name Tubbataha came from a Samal dialect, the place where the People has an extreme share of seafaring in the Sulu Region. Tubbataha means long reef exposed in low tide. Tubbataha has two parts of two attols made up of 10,000 hectares of corals and abundant form of marine life. In Tubbataha, there is only a little part of land that can be found in its area having around 2 meters of land above sea level would be it’s highest. The place and atolls have shallow lagoons surrounded by a mere 200 to 500 meters worth of reef which ends in a steep deep drop off in sea like a cliff underneath water. The atoll’s edges are made up of reef crests in low tide are exposed creating landscape at the tip of the sea.Tubbataha is well know in the southern part of the Philippines as a fisher folk. It had been branded as “Gusong” meaning coral reef by the locals of Cagayancillo, as a rich garden of coral reefs. It was only in the 1970’s that Cagayanons had adapted the name Tubbataha as they were the primary users of the Coral Reef Paradise. While in the summer months, they sail in wooden sailboats called balangay or pangko, in as long as a month worth of fishing trip.

The remoteness of Tubbataha was the main key that contributed to it’s being unexploited through time. The Philippines is affected as Tubbataha is open to shifting winds creating rough seas such as the habagat, amihan and daplak, creating fearce storms and only brief periods of weather calmness. But one the safe mode of this place takes off, it is always worth the trip and even if you’re not a diver enthusiast, you might just change your mind when you see what is underneath there. The best time to travel going to Tubbataha would be the months of summer which is form March to May.

There was a first recorded visit by a naturalist named Dean Worcester in 1911 to Tubbataha. He described the place as a Bird’s Island where he found thousand of seabirds nesting there. Having been astounded by birds, he didn’t take note of what lies underneath the sea and only what is that of a flat low sandy island that was 75 meters long and 400 meters wide. After seventy years another record had been made by Robert Kennedy himself to that Island, he said that the island had shrunk by almost 70 percent. Now the area of Tubbataha is only 23 percent from what have been recorded of it since 1911. It’s also ironic to think that even if the place is crawling with sea birds that feed on fish, the abundance of rich marine life have stayed put. The place also speak of how dynamic nature can be in all of it’s aspects.

Geographically speaking, Boracay is part of the municipality of Malay in the province of Aklan, which is located in Panay, one of a cluster of islands that constitute the central section of the Philippine archipelago.

Boracay can be reached from Manila by daily flights on Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Air Philippines, Asian Spirit, Seair and Pacific Air. Caticlan is nearer the island, but the airstrip is short and narrow, and only the smaller planes of Asian Spirit, Seair and Pacific Air can land on it. The larger aircraft of Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines fly to Kalibo, the capital of Aklan. From Caticlan it takes about 15 minutes by boat to Boracay; from Kalibo, an hour and a half by bus plus the 15-minute boat ride.

Once on the island, you will find out that getting around is simple and easy. There are three categories of transport: pedicabs and motorized tricycles shared with other passengers; individually rented bicycles and motorbikes; and the shuttle service offered by some hotels. Taxis are not available. However, since everything is more or less within walking distance, you will most likely join the majority of visitors in moving around the island on foot.

Boracay is seven kilometers long and divided into three barangays, or communities. Yapak lies in the north, Balabag in the center and Manoc-Manoc in the south. Within these barangays are smaller villages such as Angol, Manggayad and Bolabog.

Yapak is spread out over hilly terrain situated some distance away from the main tourist beat, but the shoreline is dotted with beautiful, uncrowded beaches and coves such as Puka Beach and Balinghai Beach . The island's only golf club, the 18-hole par-72 course at Fairways & Bluewater , is also located in Yapak. The Bat Caves , a popular destination for nature lovers, can be found at the barangay's northeastern tip.

White Beach , Boracay's biggest tourist attraction, stretches some four kilometers on the western side of the island, mostly within the barangay of Balabag. It is largely because of the pristine, white powdery sand of White Beach and the crystal-clear blue water of the surrounding sea that Boracay is often called "the world's most beautiful tropical island."

While White Beach takes up most of the western shoreline, Bolabog Beach dominates the eastern coast. Bolabog (sometimes spelled "Bulabog" or "Bulabug") belongs to the barangay of Balabag (with very little difference in spelling, Bolabog is often confused with Balabag by newcomers to the island). Normally the boat trip from Caticlan terminates at White Beach, but during the monsoon season when the western side of the island is lashed by strong winds, visitors are brought to a docking area in Bolabog. The waters here are also considered to offer ideal conditions for windsurfing. A small dirt road takes you from Bolabog to the foot of Mount Luho , the highest point on the island.

Understandably hotels on White Beach attract the most guests. The northern end of the beach is "lorded over" by Fridays , the southern end by Lorenzo South . In between you will find all kinds of accommodation, from native bamboo-and-nipa bungalows to Western-style concrete buildings.

White Beach extends into Manoc-Manoc, but the barangay features its own share of beaches worth visiting and exploring, including one named Manoc-Manoc Beach . The barangay also encompasses the Boracay Beach & Yacht Club and Crocodile Island, a popular destination for picnics, diving expeditions and marine excursions. The Dead Forest , a scenic spot believed to be populated by elemental spirits, is likewise located within the boundaries of Manoc-Manoc. White Beach Path runs along White Beach but is set back from the shore by rows of coconut trees. Hotels, eateries, bars, stores and dive shops line the entire length of the meandering footpath. This is where visitors to the island come to see and be seen.

You will find hotels like the longstanding Red Coconut Resort and more recently constructed Boracay Regency Beach Resort on White Beach Path, and likewise the Tourist Center , a handy one-stop shop for all kinds of travel needs (airline reservations, postcards, stamps, film, souvenirs and so forth). Thai Castles, True Food, Steakhouse Boracay , Gorio's , La Reserve Restaurant , Banza and La Capannina are among the better known eateries. Bars include Bom Bom and Summer Place Bar & Restaurant . Victory Divers and Aquarius Diving are just two of the many dive shops (there are more than 20 such outlets on the island) scattered along the path. Retail stores range from Paulo Collection Body Wear to Lonely Planet. The Talipapa Market, which burnt down in early 2005, has now been rebuilt in several locations between White Beach Path and Boracay Main Road .

Tricycles ply Boracay Main Road and a handful of side streets but are not allowed on White Beach Path. Except for Jony's Beach Resort , the town square (where the church and DOT Office are located), Beachcomber Bar & Disco , Moondog Shooter Bar , Pink Patio Resort and a few other establishments, there are not many places geared toward tourists on the main road. You may, however, ride a tricycle on the road to get to a hotel or an eatery on White Beach Path; just get off at the nearest stop and walk the rest of the way.

To facilitate locating an establishment on the island, the nearest boat station is often specified in its address. Here a word on these stations is in order: Numbered 1, 2 and 3, they are used as stopping-off points by boats ferrying new arrivals from Caticlan. Do not, however, expect some well-constructed structure with a welcoming jetty for you to conveniently step on. To disembark, you can go for one of two options: Jump into the water and wade ashore or allow yourself the luxury of being borne aloft on the shoulders of some hapless porter. Happy landing!

27/04/2011

Located off Panglao Island in Bohol, is an island called Balicasag. 1.5 hectares out of its total 25 hectares have been developed into a resort. The island’s crystal blue waters provide a clear, vivid view of its corals, fishes and other marine life.

The resort is frequented by divers, foreign and local. It has a dive shop which offers instructions on scuba diving. Of interest are shells and fresh fish that are sold by the islanders to guests of the resort.

Balicasag is a mere speck on any map of the central Philippines, lying some 60 kms to the southwest of a small island called Panglao, off the southwest tip of Bohol. Although not quite deserted, it conforms pretty well to the desert island stereotype; a flat, circular island covered in palm trees and bouganvillea, and fringed by a shell and corraline beach. There’s a definite wilderness feeling about the place – which for many is part of the island’s appeal.

Most striking is its size: at just 25 hectares you can walk all the way around it in 45 minutes, and yet there is still room for much more than just the small lighthouse tower in the middle of the island. There’s a local community of about 100 families, many of whom make a living from collecting rare shells and selling them to tourists on the beach. Balicasag Island Dive Resort, the island’s only scuba facility, is on the south side. With only 20 traditional-style bungalows lining the beach, the island is never crowded, either above or below the water.

Reading through this description, you might get the feeling that Balicasag is as remote and inaccessible as far-flung Tubbataha – which can only be reached by live-aboards. But although it rivals Tubbataha for quality of diving, Balicasag really requires no more than a modest amount of effort and time to get to. Its proximity to mainland Bohol, which has good air and sea connections with the rest of the archipaelago, ensures that reaching the island from the major Philippine travel hubs of Manila or Cebu is ussually a matter of a few hours rather than several days.
