There are scary rides at Walt Disney World, but you can still experience them and have fun with your kids, with a little preparation.

Fifth time's a charm! That is, when it comes to Rise of the Resistance at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Last year, the three younger kids and I were so excited to go on this ride. We didn't have park hoppers, so we only had one day to ride. We had Lightning Lane (LL) times so we went for our time and got up to the front of the line and the ride went down. We scanned our magic bands to use our LL at some other rides or at any time that Rise of the Resistance was back up and running.

Fast forward a couple of hours and the ride is up again. We head back and use our LL and this time we get past the line and are part of a group waiting to enter into the ride.

And the ride went down. We scan again and leave.

Third try... we actually get onto the ride! We get past the group entry, make it throught the first part of the ride (this ride has a few stages to it) and into a vehicle where we start moving through the ride, when our vehicle comes to a stop. We wait, and are escorted out of the building and we scan our bands again.

Unfortunately, we were approaching evening and my child who uses DAS was not feeling well, so we left the park without riding Rise of the Resistance.

The ride had just opened in the months prior to this, so it is normal to expect glitches. However, the people who didn't have LL were left standing in line for hours. Our last attempt was with people who spent 7 hours in line.

This visit to Disney, we had park hoppers so we could avoid a similar situation. We headed to the ride not expecting any issues because I had been watching the ride and it had been up and running every time I looked. We were in line with LL for about 15 minutes when we were escorted out and scanned to use our LL at other rides or at a later time. We went for dinner, saw the ride came back up while we were eating, and returned to ride.

And we finally got to ride the whole thing!

So was it worth all the tries to ride? Yes. It was worth it all! This is a great experience, particularly for big Star Wars fans. I'm not going to give anything away though.

My one piece of advice for this ride is use the Lightning Lane. It's not worth risking standing in line for hours, just to have the ride go down. You don't get to scan for a LL if you didn't have one in the first place, so think of it as insurance that you can ride and use it for newer rides or those that have a history of breaking down.

Did you know that Universal Resorts also has a Disability Pass for their guests?

To access the pass, you must visit guest services and explain how your disability impacts your ability to enjoy the parks. If approved, you receive a card that you take to rides and the ride attendant will write a return time on your card. The return time is typically equal to the wait time for the ride. If the ride has a wait time less than 30 minutes, you are sent to the Express Pass line. You can only have one return time on your card at a time, so the wait time can be spent relaxing or going elsewhere.

In many cases, the express pass may be a better option than the disability pass. For those who need shortened days in the park due to heat sensitivities or pain, the express pass will provide this better than the disability pass.
