Ever wonder "Why Oktoberfest?" As quirky as it may be, read on to see how our annual celebration honors our town's history and it's German roots.

In the late 60's a group of area business owners got together with artist John Kollock who thought the Blue Ridge foothills resembled his former military station in Bavaria. The group came up with a plan to save the fading timber town and the result is one of the state's most visited cities and the country's longest running Oktoberfest.

Thank you to the EMC for all your hard work restoring power so quickly here in Helen. The storm just missed us ... 2 hours away there is such devastation … Our thoughts and prayers are with all that are suffering the effects of Helene.
