This amazing picture is in the house of Israel's first Prime Minister David Ben Gurion, located in Kibutz Sde Boker. Can anyone tell me what the 3 images are in the picture and why it is so special?

Was in the UK this week so this is from last week. Where was I? And what can you spot in this view?

Last week we went to 2 very famous places - let’s start with the first!

The National Library of Israel is located today on the Hebrew University campus in Givat Ram. It has a fascinating history and dates back to 1882.

In 1882 it was published in the newspaper of Havatzelet the intent to start a national library.

From its humble beginnings as the brain child of Yeshua Herschel Levine with only a few thousand books the library has grown to over 4 million today, setting it apart as the largest library in Israel.

Levine started the library as a way to collect Jewish religious books under the auspices of Dov Vrumkim, a pioneer of Hebrew journalism, author, and builder of Jerusaleme but his tenure only lasted a couple of years before stepping down due to pressure from the Jewish yeshuv, thanks to differences of opinion when it came to the content and subjects of the books in the library.

At this point the library was taken over by Eliezer Ben Yehuda and the library found a home on B’nai Brith street in Jerusalem.

In 1892 it received 19,000 books from the private collection of Russian doctor Yosef Chazanovich.

In 1925 the Hebrew University became the caretakers of the library and moved it in 1930 to Har Hatzofim/Mount Scopus where it stayed until 1948. In that time the library grew from just 19,000 books to over 200,000 books.

With the onset of the war of independence of Israel the books were slowly moved to west Jerusalem as Har Hatzofim/Mount Scopus was cut of from the rest of Jerusalem. After some time they realised it would be a considerable project to get back to Har Hatzofim/Mount Scopus so in 1950 construction on its current home commenced in Givat Ram.

In 1960 the National Library of Israel was opened to the public and has been there ever since.

Currently construction on the new home for the library is taking place opposite the Knesset building with the opening date set for 2022, so don't miss out on the opportunity to see this amazing building for the next few years.

The library remains an important institution of Israel - there is a law in Israel that anything that is printed over 50 pages has to be sent to the library in 2 copies, regardless of number sold or if even published. And it doesn’t matter what language or topic the book is written in, if it is printed in Israel it must be sent. One copy is for people to come and read in the library and the other is kept locked away for future generations.

I hope you found this interesting and if anyone would like more info on the library please feel free to get in touch with me.

Can’t wait for the next post and if you enjoyed this post and want to continue getting these posts please consider liking this page. Thanks and have a great week!

Ok, so first of all thank you for coming to this page to share in my journey. If you haven't yet, please consider Liking the page.

So whats the plan with this space? I will post every week towards the end of the week an interesting fact, story, picture or video showcasing something amazing I learned that week in my course. If this is successful, I will try to increase my output to meet demand but time will tell how that evolves...

The "Guess the View" series will also move over to this page so stay tuned for that starting next week!!!

Please feel free to ask questions, give comments, give advice and have conversations in the comments or by private message. I would be more than happy to talk about my posts or anything at all to do with Israel. I can't promise to have all answers but i will try to get you the information that you are looking for. Bezrat hashem on Motzash (Saturday night) or Sunday the first real post will go online. Until then I want to wish everyone a Shabbat Shalom and a great weekend!
