Carved out from solid red volcanic rock in the 12th century,
Bete Giyorgis (Church of St. George) has been referred to as the
"Eighth Wonder of the World" and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela."

According to Ethiopian cultural history, Bete Giyorgis was built after King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty had a heavenly vision in which he was instructed by God on how to construct the church.

Bete Giyorgis is one of eleven monolithic rock-cut churches in Lalibela.

This is definitely one place to see. To find out more visit http://goo.gl/KxtR3
