Minneapolis has turned purple! We’re celebrating Prince and the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain. It’s true to say that without Prince there would be no us. We met and became great friends through our love of Prince and a desire to better understand his life and work, which we’ve then shared with you through our Prince tours. But today (on what would have been his birthday) we are so thankful to Prince for bringing us together, as well as with many, many other purple friends we have all around the world (tagging just a tiny number of our here!). Prince may have “just” been a musician (even if we believe he is the GOAT), but he achieved so much more than creating brilliant music. Thank you Prince, and we can’t wait to share more of his story with you guys this next few weeks and see all your faces as we celebrate him!

There’s something about the mainroom at First Avenue (the club where Purple Rain was filmed) it has such an incredible atmosphere! We seem to be spending our weekend there as we’re back tonight for Choir, Choir, Choir - Prince edition. But last night it was all about Minneapolis’ rock bands with a roaring performance from Kiss the Tiger (who we love - seriously, check them out!) and punk legends The Suburbs who really brought it!

Yes, we’re in downtown Minneapolis, where we were delighted to renew as parters with and are excited about the partnership opportunities we discussed - watch this space! Did You Know…? This statue of The Bee Gees is along the promenade on the island of their birth. But it’s not in Australia, or England (even though they went on to live in Manchester and then in Queensland). The trio, best known for hits like Staying Alive and their incredible songwriting, were born on the Isle of Man - a pretty, green island set in the Irish Sea. This tribute to the Gibb brothers can be found in the capital Douglas.

Remember the millennium!? The countdown to the year 2000 was quite an odd one with all the doomsayers! But Prince chose this as an opportunity for a big party (you know, just like if it was 1999! 😉) with his Rave Un2 the Year 2000 show, recorded on December 18, at Paisley Park. What made this show extra special? It was broadcast on December 31, 1999, serving as a thrilling New Year's Eve celebration as the world geared up for the dawn of the new millennium! 🎉🕰️🎆

The televised event provided viewers with a front-row seat to an unforgettable night of music, with guests including Lenny Kravitz and George Clinton, marking a historic moment as the clock struck midnight. 🌍🎶✨

Today marks Morris Day's birthday! 🎉🎂🎈

He was born on this day in 1956 in Springfield Illinois. He moved with his family to Minneapolis in the mid-1960s. His childhood home is a stop on our Minneapolis Sound Tour. We're wishing him a very happy birthday! 🎵✨

Unleashing the power of the guitar! 🎸

In the mid-20th century, the demand for amplified music sparked a revolution. Enter the solid-body electric guitar! Fender's Esquire paved the way in 1949, igniting a frenzy of innovation. Gibson unleashed the Les Paul, SG, Firebird, Flying V; Fender countered with the Stratocaster, Precision, and Jazz basses. But the solid-body fever didn't stop there! Brands like Epiphone, Danelectro, Rickenbacker, and Ibanez joined the iconic lineup in the 1950s. 🎶🔥

SoundAround tours founders visiting the iconic First Avenue & 7th St Entry, where music history was made! 🎵✨

First Avenue was of course, a significant venue for Prince's performances and a prominent location in his 1984 film "Purple Rain". The club continues to honor Prince's memory and has a gold star to him among the many silvery ones on it's exterior. Here's a picture of Soundaround Tours founders, Sarah & Kristen at First Avenue.

Next year is the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain and so First Avenue will surely be a popular place with people keen to celebrate the venue and Prince's legacy. Watch this space for news of some exciting plans we are cooking up to help fans celebrate this milestone. 🎶✨

She pays tribute to Prince during her show and the eagle-eyed will catch a glimpse of a guitarist styled just like the legendary artist. The chain hat and cloud guitar Madonna's guitarist uses? Yep, those are all reminiscent of Prince's legendary style! 🎩🎸

Fun Fact!

"Esther Osayande's Purple Raindrop" is a remarkable metal sculpture and seating area standing just over 15 feet tall. The sculpture is adorned with a vibrant shade of purple known as "Purple Reign," paying homage to the iconic musician, Prince. Prince places are close to our hearts, so we are super excited to be joining American Music Landmarks Project for their Music Landmarks Fest this week! It’s a virtual celebration of incredible music locations across the US and we’re contributing by highlighting two sites critical to Prince’s story in Minneapolis. We’ll have more info on where we’re taking festival-goers when our contribution goes live. But you can already check out other landmarks on their site.
There are so many artists being featured in the festival - from Tina Turner to Miles Davis and Buddy Holly - with more landmarks unlocked each day. Check it out and we’ll let you know when our contribution goes live!

Our co-founder, Kristen Zschomler, spent seven years researching and correcting the geography of Prince's locations in Minneapolis and the surrounding suburbs (yes, unfortunately there are some myths surrounding the legend!).

Her work uncovered the correct locations of his childhood home, the original Moon Sound Studio, where he met music producer Chris Moon and identified the real location where he recorded his album Dirty Mind in 1980.

Her thorough research has clarified the dates and times of Prince's association with different places, documenting his journey from Minneapolis's Northside to Paisley Park. ✨
