Save Self Catering Save Self Catering is for decent, hard working owners, agents, guests, housekeepers etc involved professionally in self catering in Scotland.
(1)

We ask that the Scottish Government uses an SSI to delay their STL Legislation until 1st October 2026. Save Self Catering represents the community of decent, hard working owners, agents, guests, housekeepers and other trades involved professionally in self catering in Scotland. We make a crucial contribution to the local and wider economy. And yet our livelihoods are currently under threat. We ask

that the Scottish Government uses an SSI to delay their Short Term Let Legislation for 4 years until 1st October 2026. Then in the meantime, revisit the idea of a simple registration scheme as this will provide the meaningful data which they do not currently have. Delaying the legislation will help to avoid the economic genocide of thousands of small self catering businesses who currently face soaring running costs and a very challenging trading environment. There is no current sign of a rescue package for our industry. Yet we form a crucial part of Scotland's tourism offering. We provide affordable accommodation that is the preferred accommodation type for Scots holidaying at home. Scotland should feel proud of what we do. But we've been drowned out by negative, often misleading press. So, here are our stories, the real people involved in Scotland's self-catering industry.......

If you are operating in Edinburgh and one of the 1800 applying for a licence we now have an action for every one of you. You may have already seen the letter sent from the Association of Scotland's Self-Caterers to the leader of The City of Edinburgh Council Council Cammy Day. If not, it's here: https://www.assc.co.uk/.../city-of-edinburgh-planning-policy

This is one of the last chances for us as a community to prevent irrevocable harm to self-catering in our capital and create pragmatic policy that can work for all. Writing now we will seek to enshrine in policy the wins in both Judicial Reviews.

ACTION
We need you to write in the next 6 days to your local City of Edinburgh Council councillors and copy in your local MSP and MP. Either do so from your own email account or use WriteToThem (link below) and let us know when it’s done.

However, it must be in your own voice and words, not a copy and paste job. Try to be positive and constructive… we do not want to get councillor’s backs up.

But we can give you the gist of what we want you to cover…

ISSUES
1. CEC STL policy has already been a resounding success. From an estimated 12 to 13 thousand STLs in Edinburgh we now know that a little over 1,800 have applied for an STL licence as secondary lets with the city's licensing team.
2. None of this ever took into consideration the need for non-tourist needs for short-stay accommodation. - Use your own examples as you see fit.
3. With only 1,800 applications in a city of well over 250,000 homes, it accounts for about 0.7% of housing and is already way less than other major European tourist destinations.
4. If these STLs remaining are not successful it will impact on Edinburgh’s festivals and many other unforeseen consequences are extremely likely.
5. Remaining provision will be hugely over-subscribed pushing up prices and making the city unaffordable to a wide range of visitors and workers.
6. A lack of options will facilitate a likely wider prevalence towards a black market, defeating the original purpose of the measures.
7. I am asking that you support proposals put forward by the Association of Scotland’s Self Caterers - to update planning policies for existing full-time professional short stay accommodation operators, so that they can be provided the opportunity to be given a licence. (Again in your own words).

Folks - this is my (Ralph) attempt at telling my story. I'd like anyone who feels they want to have a go at telling their story to create it, save it to your google drive or your apple icloud (or whatever) send me a link and I'll do the rest. Just be aware it will be publicised on the SSC twitter account and live on YouTube :)

Anyone on here from Glasgow interested in setting up their own SaveSCGlasgow Twitter account to focus attention on what's going on in Scotland's biggest city? Acutely aware that my direct knowledge is lacking as to what Glasgow Council is up to. All I know is it's almost as bad, in some ways worse, than the issues being faced by operators in Edinburgh.

If yes, please ping and let's talk. You need to be based in the city with your own S/C Unit and be able to prove you're who you say you are. I can provide you with the logo and account details and lots of historic material. Even better if you're a member of one of Scotland's associations - e.g. ASSC, PASC, Scottish B&B Association.

Cheers

Are there home letters on this forum, particularly in Edinburgh?

STL Solutions received notification that planning officers in Edinburgh are stating that anyone renting for 28+ days/year must apply for planning. 2 weeks ago they said someone staying only 2 months/year didn’t require planning.

There is an urgent meeting at 2pm, Friday 1 September to discuss the options given this new information.

The new licensing scheme for short-term lets is now open.

If you are a host of a short-term let in Scotland, you can now apply for a licence.

Those operating before 1 October 2022, must apply by 1 October 2023.

All new hosts using their accommodation for short-term lets from 1 October 2022, must obtain a licence before they can accept bookings and welcome guests.

The new licence is a legal obligation for all hosts, even if you occasionally let out a spare room or sub-let while on holiday.

To repeat Antonia's plea, "Please please could members educate themselves on using Twitter (now X) and join the fight? There are a few of us spending a disproportionate amount of time and energy trying to fight the negative onslaught towards self-catering. It's beginning to stress me out and the same few people constantly retweeting/sharing and tweeting is not a good look for the industry.

As has been mentioned before, it is used as a barometer by msps, the media and pressure groups to gauge support for the industry and we look a bit pathetic at the moment with about 10 people regularly tweeting to correct misinformation. I promise you, if you can use Facebook you can use X (twitter). If you want to save your business and have a voice, this is our most powerful tool - not complaining in a closed group for operators.

For a start follow the hashtag and and you will get the hang of it really quickly. If you want to see the opposition to self-catering just listen to Mornings with Kaye Adams on BBC Sounds yesterday - your help on Twitter could help to sway this.

Thank you 🙏" https://youtu.be/nrSjS9647Fk
