One of the most decorated homes for Halloween is this one located in Carriage Lane subdivision (east of Grande Prairie) corner of Carriage Lane Drive and Park Lane. The tallest inflatable is as tall as their house.

NUCLEAR POWER IN NORTHERN ALBERTA: Energy Alberta is finalizing their proposal to build a nuclear power plant 25 kilometres north of Peace River. It has been reported that the Calgary based company has been secretly meeting with Premier Danielle Smith and other officials since last year. Energy Alberta hope to build a nuclear power plant with two Candu reactors and eventually have as many as five. The proposal could take up to two years to finalize and if it was accepted, would take another 10 years to build. It was in 2007 that a proposal by Bruce Power was submitted to build a nuclear plant at Lac Cardinal Lake but faced much resistance. A new location near Peace River was then considered until 2011 when the proposal was finally dropped.

Don't see this everyday! It was raining for hours and then it was snowing for a considerable amount of time but it didn't stop this person from continuing mowing the grass around Whispering Ridge pond (northern part of Grande Prairie). You can see the water shooting out of the mower bed.

The Quintette Coal Mine, 20km south of Tumbler Ridge, recently reopened after a 24 year closer. The mine is now owned by Conuma Resources and has hired 360 full time employees and up to 450 people will be working there when the mine is running at full capacity. The coal will be transported by rail to Prince Rupert where it will be shipped to steel markets across the world.

Tumbler Ridge Highway 52 northbound has been closed due to the Thunder Creek Wildfire between Kelly Lake Road and Stone Creek Road for approximately 36 kilometres. (East of Bearhole Lake Provincial Park) There is a risk of the fire crossing the highway in that area. The fire was first reported on Thursday afternoon and is spreading.

CANFOR will be closing their Fort St John operations by the end of 2024 that will affect 220 jobs in Fort St John as well it will impact many contractors and suppliers. It also will close the CANFOR operation in Vanderhoof, BC by the end of this year. Earlier this year Canfor closed the mills in Houston, Bear Lake and Prince George BC. In 2021 it closed its mill in Taylor BC.

SKECHERS will be opening soon in Grande Prairie. The shoe store provides footwear for women, men and kids as well as having a clothing line will be opening just north of Winners near 116 Street (west of Costco in Grande Prairie). SKECHERS has a number of locations in Edmonton and Calgary and even one in Red Deer plus many more in other areas of Canada.

The Harry Balfour Replacement School is getting ready to open in September 2024. It will serve Junior Kindergarten to Grande 8 Students with 170 students transitioning from the Whispering Ridge School. The new school is located east of Grande Prairie just past Carriage Lane Subdivision, next to the 5 mile hall.

Sturgeon Lake has just been issued a Blue-Green Algae advisory (Friday Aug 23, 2024). Previous advisories were issued on August 15th for Hilliard's Bay at Lesser Slave Lake, July 29th for Winagami Lake and July 11th for Moonshine Lake.

MORE RESTAURANT NEWS: On the weekend Richard of Daddio’s Pizzeria announced he is retiring and the restaurant was now permanently closed. It had been open for almost 20 years on the south end of Grande Prairie in the Country Club area near 68th Avenue. Another Pizza shop will be opening in its place on Friday. George, one of the owners, says they are working to get ready to open the 5th location of Lil Ava’s Pizza. Currently they have locations in the Prairie Mall, along 100 Street and 113th avenue, plus locations in Wembley and Beaverlodge.

Then next Grande Prairie Dream Home will be built in Carriage Lane Estates, a few kilometres east of Grande Prairie on 100 Avenue. Tickets won't go on sale til sometime in late December when it will be open to the public.

A couple new Restaurants in Grande Prairie. FIREHOUSE SUBS has been popular in Ontario and is now opening up a few locations in Alberta and BC which includes one now open on the far west part of Grande Prairie. It is a subsidiary of Restaurant Brands International which also owns Burger King, Popeye's and Tim Hortons. LA PRODERA TACOS will also be opening soon at the Four Mile Corner location, on the far north side of Grande Prairie. There are rumours that a new gas station will also be added to this location, with construction just starting.

Peace Country Crops not as good as expected. What started out as a promising spring, the recent hot spell with no rain has stalled the growth of many of the crops limiting the potential yield. Farmers in Beaverlodge, Falher and Rycroft have all stated crops are a lot poorer this year. (photo east of Woking, Alberta)
