Nalukettu is the traditional homestead of old Tharavadu where many generations of a matrilineal family lived.


The traditional architecture is typically a rectangular structure where four halls are joined together with a central courtyard open to the sky. The four halls on the sides are named Vadakkini (northern block), Padinjattini (western block), Kizhakkini (eastern block) and Thekkini (southern block).

The architecture was especially catered to large families of the traditional tharavadu, to live under one roof and enjoy the commonly owned facilities of the marumakkathayam homestead.

'Kallu' is what this divine drink is called in Malayalam. It is fermented coconut tree sap. A small cut is made in the coconut tree and the sap is collected overnight to make this drink. It can be found in toddy shops all over Kerala. There are many cheap substitutes of it so make sure you are having a genuine one.

It goes well with well spiced up fish curry and kappa. The toddy shops will have a lot of other varities of seafood and exotic dishes available.

It has a sweet note and a coconut taste with an alcohol percentage of 12%. It should be tried once.
