Did you know that 59 Degrees North in Sanday is featured in one of Scottish Islands Passport travelogues? ‘Eat, Drink, Explore’ showcases a range of islands around the North and West coast, highlighting some of the wonderful food and drink producers and establishments and is on sale https://www.scottishislandgifts.com/.../scottish-islands.../

Owners of the travelogue can use the dedicated spaces on each island page to collect their rubbing stamps as they visit the islands. Our local stamp is located at the Heritage Centre, why not pop over and check it out?

Start point lighthouse is on a tidal island off the northeast of the island. It is uniquely painted in vertical stripes.

Start Point lighthouse was established in 1806 by Robert Stevenson and painted in black and white vertical stripes in 1915. It was the first Scottish lighthouse to have a revolving light.

Prior to automation in 1962 a Lightkeeper and an Assistant, with their families, lived at the light. The families were almost self sufficient.

Start Point Lighthouse is powered nowadays by Solar energy; a bank of 36 solar panels charge batteries which are then used to power the light.
