professor Dr. Suzanne Simard has been named to the TIME100 Most Influential People List! Read below:

"Human beings may pride themselves on the buried webs of wire and fibre-optic cables that allow far-flung populations to keep in touch, but the trees beat us to it—by many millions of years. That is the revolutionary finding of Suzanne Simard, professor of forest ecology at the University of British Columbia, and the author of Finding the Mother Tree.

Deep beneath the forest floor, Simard has found, trees communicate via vast networks of mycorrhizal fungi, using those symbiotic life forms to help them share nutrients and even communicate information about threats such as disease and drought.

Her TED talks have been viewed more than 10 million times, and her 200-plus peer-reviewed articles have deeply informed the thinking of conservationists and environmentalists working to help preserve forests in a world ever more threatened by climate change and wildfires. The trees, Simard teaches us, are talking. It is our job to start listening."

Take heed Population growth has put extra pressure on the Tofino's infrastructure, including water use.

Boosted by about a million visitors a year, most arriving in the summer months, Tofino’s population is also growing rapidly. Census data from 2021 shows the population has increased 28% to 2,217 since 2016 — the second highest rate of growth on the Island after Langford.

Outdoor water use is banned, and residents are told that if the drought persists in Tofino, more drastic measures will be on the table.

Historically Grizzly bear did not live on Vancouver Island and it's rare that Grizzly bears swim across from the BC mainland central coast to northern Vancouver Island.
Grizzly bears look for new territory after there home has been logged. Grizzly bears swimming to North Vancouver Island has been more frequent since forest companies barged in road building equipment, set up logging operations and have been clear cutting old growth primeval forests.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (COS) is warning residents of a grizzly bear that's been spotted in the Port McNeill area of Vancouver Island.
