After raising five kids and spending years building a meaningful career, Jessie Savilla reached another milestone in his life at the age of 60.

Savilla is among the 3,747 passers out of 6,344 examinees of the 2016 Bar examinations. The new lawyer, who graduated from University of Nueva Caceres in Naga City in 2015, has finally attained his dream after years of fulfilling his family’s dream.

“Nag-asawa na ako, may anak. Wala na yung personal na pangarap, pangarap mo na ay para sa pamilya,” Savilla told ABS-CBN News.

In 1981, Sevilla enrolled himself in the university to study law. However, he decided to give up law school after a year and a half.

When the bank he previously worked for closed, Savilla decided to give law school another shot. He began scanning his old law school books and rediscovered his interest in it. His family even supported his decision that his kids volunteered to pay for his tuition.

“Kasi nawalan ako ng trabaho, wala na akong ginagawa, nakita ko yung mga libro ko dati, inumpisahan kong i-scan sila and parang may fire na, nagkaroon agad ako ng interes, sabi naman ng mga anak ko, kami na ang mag papaaral sayo,” Savilla recounted.

Although Savilla did not pass the Bar exams during his first attempt, his second attempt proved to be successful. Now, there are two lawyers in his family as the eldest of his five children, Rainier, also passed the bar in 2012.

When asked for a message for fellow lawyers, Savilla said:

"In your younger years, strike while the iron is hot. But in your senior years, you have to strike and strike unceasingly hard to make it hot.”

Asiang Reyes – The Aristocrat

In the 1930s, Asiang Reyes started The Aristocrat as a mobile canteen in Luneta, serving sandwiches filled with adobo and other Filipino viands. Hotdog trucks were in vogue at that time. Reyes created her own version of merienda for park-goers.

Reyes was supposed to name the canteen “Andy” after her eldest son, but changed it to Aristocrat instead. The canteen prospered, and Reyes and her husband decided to turn it into a full-time restaurant.

Milagros, Clarita, and Doris Leelin – Goldilocks

With only two cake displays and ten employees, Milagros, Clarita, and Doris Leelin started Goldilocks at a 70-sq-m building space in Makati. Sisters Milagros and Clarita loved baking and decided to pursue their passion into business. With the help of their sister-in-law Doris, the Leelins opened their first branch.

In 1971, Cresida Tueres started Greenwich as a small over-the-counter pizza store in Greenhills. Tueres had a knack for cooking. Her friends loved the food she served so much that they decided to buy their own Greenwich franchise.

Impressed with Tueres’s business acumen and the growth of Greenwich, Jollibee Foods Corporation obtained a deal in 1994 to acquire 80% of Greenwich’s shareholding. Since then, the pizza parlor branched out to include other dishes in its menu. In 1997, Greenwich had a record sale of P1 billion.

Lucio Tan - PAL, Fortune To***co

It’s hard to believe Lucio Tan - who doesn’t sm0ke - owns the biggest cigarette manufacturing company in the country, Fortune To***co.

He was born in Fujian Province, China on July 17. As a child, Tan had to work in Bataan To***co Factory to help the family.

Tan was able to push himself to elementary and high school. Via a work-study program, Tan earned some units at the University of the East for Chemical Engineering.

Although unable to finish college, he saw the big opportunity and put up his own cigarette company in 1966 starting with just two cigarette-making machines. Eventually, Tan was able to introduce such budget brands as “Hope”.

Tan never looked back and through his sharp business acumen was able to salvage dying businesses and grow them into dynamic structures.

Examples include Philippine Airlines and Tanduay Distillers. Today 80 percent of the cigarette market in the Philippines is captured by his company and PAL is the leading carrier in the airline industry.

Cecilio Kwok Pedro - "Lamoiyan Corporation"

Cecilio Kwok Pedro used to head Aluminum Container Inc., which produced the aluminum toothpaste tubes for Procter and Gamble, Philippine Refining Company (now Unilever), and Colgate-Palmolive.

However, environmental concerns led Cecilio's clients to shift to plastic-laminated toothpaste tubes. Aluminum Container Inc. failed and closed its shop in '86.

Cecilio put up Lamoiyan Corporation and manufactured toothpaste that was priced 50 percents lower than his competitors.

These included the still-popular brands Hapee and Kutitap. Although the foreign brands countered by lowering their brands by 20 percents, he responded by introducing toothpaste targeted for children that featured the characters from Sesame Street. His brands have made it to other markets in Asia, such as China, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

His greatest accomplishment wasn't limited to manufacturing. Cecilio’s also known for his advocacy to help hearing-impaired people find employment in the country.

Cecilio’s programs include free housing for more than thirty deaf–mute staffs. To date, more than 180 hearing-impaired students have received college education through Deaf Evangelistic Alliance Foundation (DEAF).

John Gokongwei - JG Holdings

John Gokongwei's life story is a “rich-to-rags-to riches” story. John Jr. was born in China to the scion of one of the wealthiest families in Cebu.

When his father died, so did the business and the family fortune was soon gone. He supported his family by peddling items along the streets of Cebu by bike. Soon, John was trading items by boat to Lucena City and to Manila by truck. Eventually, John started importing items from the United States.

John soon realized that importing carried too much risk and low margins. Thus, in 1957, John borrowed Php 500,000 from China Bank and started a corn milling business named Universal Corn Products.

By 1961, Universal started diversifying its products and launched several popular brands such as Blend 45. Universal Corn Products was renamed Universal Robina Corporation.

Today, the Gokongwei family owns several successful and highly diversified businesses. Among these are Robina Land Corporation and Cebu Pacific.

Henry's success led to the opening of his first shoe store, the SM (Shoe Mart) in Avenida, Manila. With a clear vision, he decided to embark on a new journey capitalizing at the property business sector with his siblings and Tony Tan Caktiong, the man behind JFC. Their partnership was able to accumulate a total of one million square meters of leasable space now known as Double Dragon.

His may not be your typical rags-to-riches story but his meek and modest start at the province, to now competing with the giants in the industry, his story remains as an inspiration to all the probinsiyano entrepreneurs in the Philippines.

Starting as a small sub-dealer in 1978 known as Carworld, LausGroup of Companies over the years expanded into a network of dealerships now having more than 50 branches located all over Luzon and Metro Manila.

The company is a crowning glory of no other than the glamour boy of entrepreneurship, Libereto “Levy” P. Laus who was dubbed as the countryside taipan because of his countless awards and recognitions in the automotive business and corporate industry.

Although he has faced a tragic and untimely death in April of 2019, he has left a huge mark in the automotive industry. Because of his hard work and trust to his fellow countrymen, he was able to provide thousands of jobs, and thus letting his reign of transforming lives be continued even after his life.
