Sad to hear this morning that food truck Corazón de Torta, which my friends Antonio Ley (aka: El Tony Tee) and chef José Figueroa opened in 2017, is closing permanently so Tony can focus on his work within the Latino community. "You know Scott," Tony once told me, "the only reason I started this food truck is so that Anthony Bourdain might come back to visit me again". Tony was Bourdain's fixer in Tijuana for an episode of "No Reservations" and was hopeful that the "Two Tonys" would once again reunite. Well, that never transpired, obviously. I've had the pleasure to work with Tony on "Tacos with Muchachos" as a segment of YouTube show "Baja Window to the South", and he's also a key contributor to my new Taco Project (stay tuned!). I tried to think of what to post as a fitting tribute: One of our segments, photos from the truck's opening, which I attended in 2017, my taco truck blog post in which CdT featured prominently, or one of the several photos of Tony and I hamming it up for the camera. I landed on this video, which I worked on as part of a larger project with the The Culinary Institute of America, wherein Tony and Joe talk about their most excellent guisados. Damn. I'm gonna miss that albondigas torta, but suerte Tony on your next adventure!

A big Gr**go GRACIAS to my good friend and fellow taco connoisseur Julio Cesar Marruffo of Marruffo's Tours a Viñedos & Eventos, Transportacion for rolling me around his hometown for some taco R&D in Tijuana today. And after 6 taquerias and many excellent tacos, he could have literally rolled me back across the border! Hahahahah!

It's been one year to the day that my buddy and tour partner Fernando Cuevas slipped his mortal coil and passed into the Great Beyond. In this day and age of bought and paid for influencers–who visit a place once and claim to be "experts"–Fernando was naturally influential and loved to show his tour guests his favorite spots in Baja California, Baja California Sur, and beyond, con gusto! Hope to see you on the Other Side someday, amigo. Maybe you can give me a full-on tour of your favorite celestial destinations ❤️

Three Amigos Taco Tours

Three Amigos Taco Tours are designed to introduce taco fans to the various and delicious tacos available just south of the border in Tijuana and other destinations in Baja California. Tours are designed to accommodate 12 guests comfortably in our van. Guests will meet our hosts at PedWest in San Ysidro and walk across the US-Mexico border where they will meet the van. Stops include visits to 6-8 taco carts, stands and shops, traditional Mexican markets, cerverzerias (brew pubs), wine tasting shops, popular restaurants for dinners and other Tijuana attractions.

With immigrants from all over the country living in the border city, Tijuana is one of the few urban areas where you can enjoy tacos influenced by nearly all seven Mexican culinary regions. This includes tacos de birria (Jalisco), barbacoa (Texcoco), mariscos(Sinaloa & Ensenada), carne asada (Sonora), adobada (al pastor) (Mexico City) and more.
