Ukraine Victory Day May 9 marks the Day of Victory over Na**sm in World War II and was established as a public holiday by the Law of Ukraine “On the Immortalization of Victory over Na**sm in World War II of 1939-1945.

World War II began for Ukraine on September 1, 1939, with the N**i German invasion of Poland. On that day, German military aircraft bombed Lviv and other cities. On September 17, the Soviet Union entered World War II by attacking Poland and occupying part of its territory, according to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact secret protocol.

A lot of people around the world do not know that Ukraine suffered the greatest losses during World War II among all the world countries, not only the former Soviet republics. Some records show various estimates, from 8 to 10 million people, including about 5 million civilians, were killed in Ukraine during World War II. Moreover, 2.2 million people were taken to the forced labor camps in N**i Germany. About ten million people lost their shelter. Over 700 towns and urban-type settlements and nearly 30,000 villages were completely ruined.

The native peoples of Ukraine made a significant contribution to the victory over Na**sm. About 45,000 people fought in the armies of the United Kingdom and Canada, 120,000 people – in the army of Poland, about 6 million people – the army of the USSR, 80,000 people – the US army, 6,000 – the army of France, and up to 100,000 people were in the ranks of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.

Today, the people, who fought against the Na**sm, are commemorated, and the solidarity and combat brotherhood of all the United Nations, both states and stateless peoples, is honored. At the same time, the emphasis is shifted from the military hostilities to the stories of specific people, and, therefore, it is proposed to honor the memory, not celebrate.

Remembrance poppies have been the official symbol to mark the Day of Victory over Na**sm in World War II for several years now in Ukraine as the generally accepted symbol of commemorative days around the globe. Its graphic image presents a kind of combined commemoration: a poppy flower and a bloody gunshot wound.

Hopefully this post will help people to truly understand how the people of Ukraine suffered the most in World War II and how proud of a nation Ukraine is to hold true to their culture and heritage.

This gives our customers a good point of view on how much we love our beloved Ukraine. We continue to work towards a better country with this year being year 30 of independence. Democracy and freedom does not come easy. Usually there are lives to pay for being free. Ukraine certainly did its share and then some for the world in World War II.

Easter week in Ukraine - Traditions

The biggest joy of Easter Sunday for many people simply comes from enjoying food-eggs, sweet bread and meat- that they did not eat for the past 6 weeks during lent. Lent – the period of fasting before Easter — is practiced in Ukraine much as it is elsewhere. Religious observant refrain from eating animal products: meat, eggs, and dairy. Now imagine how exited you would be to feast after weeks of very moderate diet?

The whole week before Ester Sunday is devoted to the preparations for the actual Easter celebration

Holy Week – as it is called– begins with Willow Sunday. In most countries this celebration of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem is called Palm Sunday, but a combination of pre-Christian pagan symbolism and a lack of local palm trees led Ukrainians to adopt willow switches as their symbolic branches.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are spent preparing food for the Easter: dyeing eggs, baking eastern bread P***a and roasting meat. All of the food has to be prepared by so called Clean Thursday, because on that day we have a different chore – cleaning the house and yourself. My grandmother would wake me and my sister up and take us to a closest creek. We had to rinse our faces with freezing cold water as the sun was rising. That was really refreshing and we were wide awake after this early washing! Also she believed that this procedure will give us beauty as we grow up into young ladies.

Good Friday is also called Mourning Friday because it is the day when Christ had died. People are not supposed to eat anything and spend the day on the service in church. No work is allowed either.

Saturday is the rest day because there is a whole night service coming and you have to be wide awake.

Easter Sunday
After the mass (and sometimes after going back to sleep), families celebrate Easter morning with a feast from their Easter baskets. The p***a, meat, cheese, and other “feast” foods are consumed, breaking the Lenten fast.

Many households begin the feast with the dyed krashanky eggs. All kids favorite part of the morning is the game called “egg battles” or “egg knocking”: two people rap their eggs together, and if someone’s eggshell breaks, that person is out of the game (or has to give the egg up, or eat it, depending on family tradition).

Ukraine does not have the concept of an “Easter bunny,” or of Easter egg hunts, and chocolate and candy do not play a traditional role. These days the Easter basket might include a bit of chocolate, but the savory treats are still the focus of the morning meal

International Women's Day today March 8, 2021 celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity and to fundraise for women focused charities. Worldwide groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality. The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2021 is 'Choose To Challenge'.

International Women's Day has occurred for well over a century with the first gathering held in 1911. Purple, green and white are the colors of International Women's Day. Purple signifies justice and dignity. Green symbolizes hope. White represents purity. International Women's Day is not country, group, nor organization specific. No one government, NGO(non-governmental organization), charity, corporation, academic institution, women's network, or media hub is solely responsible for International Women's Day. The day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.

International Women's Day is a public holiday. It is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed. There are a range of activities and events that take place on International Women’s Day in Ukraine. Many people buy flowers, confectionery and other gifts for female friends, partners or family members on International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day is a public holiday across Ukraine so many shops, museums, and libraries, as well as government offices and educational institutions are closed. It was a state holiday of the former Soviet Union since 1965. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Ukraine kept the holiday. International Women’s Day is also celebrated in other countries around the world. Flowers, such as roses and tulips, are of often seen on display or sold in Ukraine International Women’s Day. They are given as gifts to honor women and also symbolize the start of spring.

In Ukraine, March, 8 is a day of ultimate leisure for women: they relax, receive congratulations, flowers and compliments. It is kind of an unwritten rule to say nice things, either with a heartwarming speech at the celebratory dinner, or just unexpectedly to remind them of your love and tender feelings. However, Ukrainians know that it’s not the only day of the year when we should be sincere and kind to women.

Nothing makes a better gift than one crafted by your own fair hand. In every Ukrainian school and kindergarten, children observe tradition and make greeting cards for International Women’s Day. These mementoes are usually decorated with colourful cardboard, paper flowers and bright ribbons, which together with a spring bouquet and breakfast in bed, are a great way to surprise your favourite women. Ukrainians are known for their generous hospitality and cheerful disposition – most celebrations here are usually held in the family and friends circle, and International Women’s Day is no exception. March, 8 is a day of joyous fun and inspiration.

We at Ukraine In Colors would like to thank all the beautiful amazing women of the world today in great appreciation for everything they do. Do everything you can today for the women in your life, special ladies who make your life more pleasurable, or any woman you meet while out walking and say how much you deeply care for them in your heart. Yes, it is a special day of the year but please remember to carry your thoughts today for the rest of the year too. It will make your life happier knowing you are doing something that money can not buy. When it comes from the heart and soul no price can be put on it ever!🙏🙏🙏🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

Ukraine celebrated the 29th anniversary of the re-establishment of its independence on August 24 with an address to the nation by the president, festive events on St. Sophia Square and the unofficial March of Defenders of Ukraine.

After traditional ceremonies and the presentation of state awards, 42 most notable Ukrainian songs of the last 29 years was performed. Excerpts from the songs were performed by several Ukrainian singers, including Jamala, Oleksandr Ponomariov, Nina Matvienko, Taras Topolya, Potap, Oleh Vynnyk, Monatik, Iryna Bilyk, Ruslana, Tina Karol, Natalia Mohylevska and others.

Ukrainians received many messages of congratulations from the world leaders. In his message to the people of Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump underscored the challenges facing Ukraine and the world this year, noting the importance of the Ukrainian authorities’ peace initiatives and confrontation with the COVID-19 pandemic. He also noted that the United States will unwaveringly support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity until it regains its entire territory, including Crimea.

Pope Francis conveyed to the president of Ukraine and all of Ukraine’s citizens his wishes of peace and prosperity. “At this time, as you celebrate the country’s Independence Day in the wake of the epidemic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, I assure you and your citizens of my prayer and closeness, so that you build a stable and united state in a spirit of unity, solidarity and dialogue. So that every Ukrainian can live in peace, prosperity, security and fellowship. May the Lord bless you and all the people of your country,” the pontiff’s letter read.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated the Ukrainian community in Canada and Ukrainians around the world on Ukraine’s Independence Day. Mr. Trudeau proudly pointed out that over 1.3 million Canadians of Ukrainian descent call Ukraine their homeland.

Leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Israel, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, China and other countries also congratulated Ukraine on the 29th anniversary of Independence.

Below is a video of President speaking with subtitles in English and then the singing of the songs. It is very moving to again hear all of the songs from the past leading up to the present time. We hope you fully enjoy the video as we do. Thank you! 👍

The legends of Ukraine are just so magical they are always just a real pleasure to read about. Here is another wonderful legend of our enchanted country about Desna and Dniper. Enjoy!☺️

Many years ago there was a brother and a sister whose father was totally blind and had to Bless anything that his children did. The sister was named Desna and the brother was named Dniper. Desna, always envious of Dinper, thought that the father loved her brother more. When they grew up and it became time for both of them to leave their father’s house Desna thought of a devious plan and came to her father pretending to be Dniper. The father being blind thinking it was his son, blessed her to go slowly around the world helping people everywhere. When Dniper came to his father asking him to bless him too, the father alarmingly realized how his own daughter had lied to him. So quickly he blessed Dniper to go and become the strongest and most majestic river ever, catch up with his sister and not let her grow any larger.

This is exactly what Dnipro did. He went as fast as possible trying to catch up with his untrustworthy sister. He managed to catch her very quickly but the current in the Dniper river stayed very fast even until today. The rivers Desna and Dniper still flow in parallel, one on the right side, one on the left. But the Dniper is much stronger and more majestic than the Desna. Although the Desna does have more fish, but a very slow current.

Every country has its legends that are just so wonderful to read about. They are truly amazing stories that are passed on from generation to generation to ensure that they are told forever and ever. Ukraine is no different. In fact enchanted Ukraine seems to have more than its share of them from the rich history of the past. Here is just one of those legends. It is called the "Legend of Mother Ukraine." Enjoy it as we will be bringing our visitors a greater insight into what our wonderful country is all about!

"The Legend of Mother Ukraine"

There was a Ukrainian lady who gave birth to three sons. They were all very intelligent, handsome, truthful and also kind to no end to everyone they met. All three of them loved their Mother and also spent their entire life providing for her complete happiness. When they grew into manhood they walked the entire Earth informing everyone how wonderful and caring their mom was to the people, plants, and animals.

As a present to her first, the eldest son, the Mother provided a crown with three rays, the crown was a symbol of light and hope for mankind. Individuals soon came to call the first son Spear.

When the second son left the home his Mom provided him blue as well as yellow clothing to put on. He was very smart as well as clever. Individuals liked him and because of his bright and colorful clothing called him Flag.

As a present to the youngest boy the Mother gave the beautiful voice of a nightingale. This son informed anyone he met of the many great stories regarding his loving and caring Mom anywhere he went. People liked him for his voice as it seemed like the song of a bird so they called him Anthem.

Even today the three sons called Spear, Flag and also Anthem walk around the globe proclaiming the amazing virtues their mother, Ukraine.

08/07/2020

Ivan Kupala Day combines the words Ivan, the Slavic name of John the Baptist, and Kupala, derived from the Slavic word for bathing. However, is also said the name of the day is associated with Kupajla or Kupalo, a harvest god. Traditions and activities associated with this holiday can also be traced back to Pagan rituals.

In pagan times, a millennium ago, Ukrainian women used to believe that by observing how a wreath of flowers floated on a river, they could divine their fortunes in relationships. A wreath that floated signaled love was on the way, while one that sank foretold that the woman would remain single. Young men would attempt to capture the floating wreaths to symbolically capture the hearts of the women who floated them.

The ritual was traditionally carried out by unmarried women on the night before the Ivana Kupala holiday (originally June 23 in the ancient Julian calendar, but now July 7). It is one of several ancient Slavic pagan rituals celebrating the summer solstice, when the days are at their longest in the northern hemisphere.

Historically people respected nature, and revered and worshiped all of its symbols in everyday life. Ukraine is a great state with a history longer than a millenium. It has always been admired and its enemies have always feared it. When people forget the history and traditions of their country, they become orphans it is said.

As well as telling love fortunes, the folk rites involve purification and fertility. They include jumping over a bonfire to prove one’s bravery and to cleanse oneself of sins. Some also believe that those who find a fern flower on the holiday will be rich, healthy and happy for the rest of their lives.

It is a well-known fact that the night of Ivana Kupala is magical. It is a night when all dreams come true.

People wear national clothes as they dance and sing. Women make wreaths out of flowers as a symbol of natural feminine beauty. There are usually food courts for those who want to have a picnic and also there are concerts and performances of different varieties and bands. At sundown, people burn a dummy symbolizing a witch and dark powers. After that, people jump over the fire to get protected from all bad things. While jumping over the fire, couples hold hands as a symbol of love and strong marriage.

Ivan Kupala Day is an observance and not a public holiday in Ukraine. The Christian Church converted this holiday into John the Baptist Day a long time ago, but it is still celebrated with ancient rituals to gain wealth, health and love – but most of all, to have fun.

We would truly enjoy having you or your group join us for this wonderful observance day. Experience all of the sights and sounds that will excite all of your emotions at the same time. We are very traditional here in Ukraine so why don't you book a tour with us today and discover history as only it can be done in Ukraine!

There are many things to see and do in Ukraine that most people do not even know exist. The Hot Air Balloon Festival in Kamianets-Podilskyi can be rightfully named the eighth miracle of Ukraine. If you visit Kamianets-Podilskyi in autumn (in September) or in spring (in the second half of May) the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival is held; it has a very symbolic name – “Towards the Sun” – and includes also the Ukrainian Aeronautics Championship.

At the festival, there are flights on aerostats, during which you can enjoy incredible landscapes of the mediaeval city, the picturesque canyon of the Smotrych River, the Old Castle, and if you’re lucky – fly under the Running Deer Bridge.

Aeronautics is a separate kind of air sports that has its own competitions, records and champions. The Ukrainian Aeronautics Championship traditionally takes place in Kamianets-Podilskyi; both Ukrainian and international teams take part in it, competing for the Cup of Podillya and sponsored prizes. After the competition, the aeronautic fiesta begins, during which the guests can go on a long-dreamed hot air balloon flight and see all the beauty of Podillyan land from the bird’s eye view.

You should book a place on a flight in advance, as there are always plenty of those who want to join. The morning flight for tourists usually starts at 5:30 am, the evening one – at 6:30 pm.

Apart from the air balloons that fill the sky above Kamianets-Podilskyi in May, the city has a lot to show. Taking a walk through the city, you’ll plunge into the atmosphere of the ancient times and see many beautiful sights. Among them are the Rus Gate, the Armenian belfry, the Triumphal Arch that makes your wishes come true, the Catholic Church with a minaret, and, of course, the Fortress of Kamianets-Podilskyi – one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine. When you visit the castle, you feel like a character from a Disney fairy-tale invited to the royal banquet.

If you weren’t lucky enough to take a flight on a balloon during the festival or you couldn’t visit the festival, don’t be disappointed – Feel Ukraine organizes hot air balloon flights over the picturesque landscapes of Lviv Region and Podillya. It’s a brilliant idea for a romantic date or a wedding proposal, by the way.

Here at Ukraine in Colors we can work with you to have the best vacation of your life and one that you will talk about to everyone you meet. This article is just one of the amazing adventures that await our country's visitors. A hot air balloon ride is certainly one way to get the best experience possible from above that you usually can not take in the entire landscape.

The video is nice but just imagine what it feels like to be here in person! One way to find out is to contact us today. As our motto says "Dream your vacation - We paint it!"
